Ed Simon on the Whiskey Rebellion - Berfrois
Herman Husband – itinerant preacher, politician, regulator, radical – would amble among the woods surrounding Pittsburgh. Here on the trans-Appalachian frontier, the native North Carolinian with his shoddy patchwork clothes and with his biblically long beard.
"No other serious political program in American history has been as openly contemptuous of the nation’s founding document, of its Bill of Rights, and of the Fourteenth Amendment’s guarantees of due process and equal protection."
No matter what happens in November, the sickness may be terminal.
America Was Born 60 Years Ago
A few days ago in 1956, construction began on what became the starting point of modern America: the Interstate Highway System.
Hey all, forgive us our summer slump - We've been so enraptured by the campaign insanity of this season! We promise that we'll have more, great, new material up at 'Merica Magazine shortly!
Latest piece by editor Ed Simon!
Used cynically, the word “America” is conceptualised not as that undiscovered country yet to be born on maps yet printed.
"American experiment requires a kind of faith...and when we begin to lose that faith, in the face of hatred and fear and violence, sometimes we need to go to church."
In an editorial, 'Merica reflects on Obama's DNC speech and what it means to profess faith in the concept of America.
Last night, President Obama gave what may have been the best speech in his career at the Democratic National Convention. Better yet, Obama took us to church. Obama in full preacher mode here…
There has never been a major candidate in U.S. history to call on a belligerent foreign power to perform an act of cyber-terrorism on the United States. This is not liberal conspiracy theorizing - it's based on the words Trump himself said. If you don't see Trump's actions and rhetoric as profoundly anti-American (and if you feel the need to retreat to the same old canards against the left) then you are bullheaded, misinformed, stupid, or anti-American yourself. Wave your flag and say you want to "Make America Great Again" all you want, but know that you're supporting a candidate directly supported by Vladimir Putin. If you're to the left, a vote for a third-party candidate is a vote for Trump. If you normally vote for Republicans there is no shame in sitting this one out. That's because this whole thing has gotten bigger than our old politics, Donald Trump poses the single greatest threat to American independence, sovereignty, and freedom.
The Republican nominee broke a cardinal rule of American politics: Never root against the United States.
Quick reminder: we've been a little quieter on facebook but more active on Twitter. What is sadder, that so many Republicans insist that their candidate must believe in Jesus Christ, or that they're actually delusional enough to think that Trump does?
Everyone ready for Night Two of the clown show? Don't forget to follow us on Twitter, where we can commiserate about the mess that is this gross nightmare.

Rebecca Traister's piece on the right's lip service to concepts like diversity. Keep an eye out for the continually-more-clearly-articulated xenophobia and misogyny during the RNC today!
Both the Republican Party and its media arm are being brought down by the public exposure of the subjugation on which their success was built.
The Republican Convention is a national embarrassment.

Today marks the one year anniversary of 'Merica Magazine (or our domain name at least....). Hopefully one year from now there will still BE an America (at least of the tolerant, multicultural, polyglot, diverse variety that we dig).
Anyone who supports Donald Trump is a traitor to the American idea.
George W. Bush's Plea For Unity Lands Heavily On Trump

We're officially back from our Happy Birthday America break (the highest of high holidays here at Merica Magazine Office Tower) with poems from the fantastic Trish Lindsey Jaggers. Her work is challenging, timely, and powerful.
It's one of the pleasures of doing this work that I can share art that speaks engagingly to our moment. This is one of those occasions. Please share and help spread Trish's writing; this is the kind of poetry that demands to be read.

"This fulsome embrace of Mr. Trump is rather problematic, since he embodies a worldview that is incompatible with Christianity. If you trace that worldview to its source, Christ would not be anywhere in the vicinity."
Let’s just say it does not revolve around the teachings of Jesus Christ.
Songs of Ourselves: Searching for America’s Epic Poem - The Millions
For all of our tweedy jingoism, the United States seems rare among nations in not having an identifiable and obvious candidate for national epic.

Some people went down the shore in the summer, Ashley Pfeiffer went to Gettysburg.
In honor of Memorial Day, it's worth revisiting the thoughts of our friend and colleague Daniel Kimmel.
As a Soldier in the US Army, I hold it to be my most sacred duty to become obsolete. That is, at least in theory, the highest military achievement would be to inaugurate a perpetual Armistice in wh...
