The Seneca Collective Zine We are the visual arts students of Seneca, and we're here to make comics, art and animations for you What is The Seneca Collective? Who is The Seneca Collective?

The Seneca Collective is a free bimonthly art and illustration zine (a self-published magazine) from the School of Communication Arts and Animation students of Seneca College which aims to spread the work of Seneca’s visual art students around campus and to provide resources and networking opportunities to Seneca’s art students. The zine features themed illustrations, comics, illustrated recipes a

nd in-depth interviews with industry professionals. All of Seneca’s visual art students, whether they are in Illustration, Animation, Art Fundamentals or Graphic Design are encouraged to submit art to The Seneca Collective for inclusion in the zine. The Seneca Collective is also registered with the SSF as a club and any students who are interested in submitting to the zine are encouraged to sign up to join us. We plan to host on-campus events that will further promote interaction and creativity among Seneca’s visual art students. We are all current or former visual arts students from Seneca College. For more information about the editors and contributors of the zine, please see the contributors page. Where can I get The Seneca Collective? You can pick up your copy of The Seneca Collective at the Seneca@York library. If you can’t get to the campus or the library has run out of copies then you can still read all issues of The Seneca Collective digitally, for free and in their entirety on our Issues page. How do I submit to The Seneca Collective? Here’s what you need to know to submit:

Submissions are only open to those who are currently attending or have previously attended Seneca college! Submissions will be printed as BLACK/WHITE/GRAYSCALE because colour printing is insanely expensive! Please keep this in mind for your submissions! In some instances we may accept submissions with VERY LIMITED colour. Please consult us about this. Submissions must fit within a 5.5” by 8.5” page (double paged spreads are allowed, just make it 8.5” by 11”). Submissions must be submitted as high res JPEGs or TIFFs and be AT LEAST 300 DPI; 600 DPI is preferred. When you submit any sort of submission, we’d love it if you include a little doodled self-portrait for the contributors page. Grayscale photos are also acceptable for the contributors page. NO EXPLICIT PO*******HY (some nudity is fine), EXTREME GORE, EXCESSIVE SWEARING (just bleep it out!) OR HATESPEECH IS TOLERATED. Please try and avoid all copyrighted media! We’d really like to not get sued! Any copyrighted media included in submissions will be denied. This does NOT include fanart. You can submit that. Just don’t submit other people’s work. E-mail all submissions to SenecaCollectiveZine(at)gmail(dot)com, or use the submission form. Each contributor will receive some copies of the zine to distribute however they’d like! We’ll have to be able to give it to you at the school, however; we will not be sending out copies in the mail, as that’s rather expensive. If you cannot receive your copy for whatever reason, we’re also putting together PDF versions of the zine, so we can e-mail you one!

Artist / Gallery / Dealer Contracts, Agreements, Arrangements and Relationships

Things worth taking into consideration when working with a gallery.

Q: I've been talking with a local gallery that wants to give me a show in about six to nine months. It's all good so far, but I don't really know them that well. What kinds of questions should I ask? Should we have a contract? What if the gallery doesn't use contracts? Would an informal agreement be…

"It’s a terrible thing, I think, in life to wait until you’re ready. I have this feeling now that actually no one is ever ready to do anything. There is almost no such thing as ready. There is only now. And you may as well do it now. Generally speaking, now is as good a time as any." Hugh Laurie (via topkun) http://ift.tt/1gohoaF

thesenecacollectivezine: The deadline for submissions for the next issue of The Seneca Collective willl be MARCH 18TH and the release date for the third issue will be MARCH 25TH, although this is subject to change. The theme for the next issue of The Seneca Collective will be "PROGRESS". You may interpret this theme in any way which you would like whether it involves progress in society, the progress of a character, or your progress at Seneca! Remember, the theme is only there to provide inspiration. Feel free to ignore the theme altogether. If you’d like to get an idea of the type of content that we publish in the zine then take a look at the previous issues. Keep in mind that we’re open to and actively encouraging people to submit new types of content! We are excited to announce that the interview will be with artist/adventurer, Ryan Estrada, whose work you may be familiar with from anthologies such as Flight volume 4, This Is How You Die: Stories of the Inscrutable, Infallible, Inescapable Machine of Death or his newest project, The Whole Story. More exciting info about that later! We are also currently seeking submissions specifically intended for use as the cover art. Here is a template of the layout of the cover for the third issue. Whatever art you submit for the cover should work with the overall layout of the cover, leaving dead space for the logo, text, issue number, and other illustrations. This does not mean that your illustration can’t extend to the edges of the page, (we would prefer it if it did) it just means that you shouldn’t put anything interesting in the areas that the other elements will be covering up and that your focal point should be where the big black circle is. It doesn’t have to match the current layout exactly (we can always move stuff around) but it should be as close as possible. The cover should also reflect the theme of the new issue which, as previously announced, is "PROGRESS". Here’s what you need to know to submit: Submissions are only open to those who are currently attending or have previously attended Seneca college! Submissions will be printed as BLACK/WHITE/GRAYSCALE because colour printing is insanely expensive! Please keep this in mind for your submissions! In some instances we may accept submissions with VERY LIMITED colour. Please consult us about this. We’d really like to not get sued! Any copyrighted media included in submissions will be denied. This does NOT include fanart. You can submit that. Just don’t submit other people’s work. However, we are not very interested in putting fanart on the cover. E-mail all submissions to SenecaCollectiveZine(at)gmail(dot)com, or use the submission form. If you are submitting art to be used on the cover, just let us know that it’s for the cover in your submission. If it is not selected for use on the cover we will most likely still print it inside the issue. We may also create several variant covers if we get more than one suitable submission. We want to get as many submissions for this issue as possible so please help us get the word out by reblogging this on Tumblr, retweeting our posts on Twitter and telling everyone you know in Seneca’s visual arts programs about us. -Amanda Sandland, Tim Lai & Armin Karimloo, Editors The deadline for the next issue is this Tuesday and to be honest we haven’t received any submissions yet and we’ve all been pretty busy. So if you’re working on something then let us know but we might have to postpone this issue. http://ift.tt/1nvjhaN

The More You Dig Deeper Into The Industry, The More You Realise That You Were Miles Away In The...

Looking back on my time in my degree, when the only ‘industry contact’ I had was my 3D modelling teacher, I had no idea how little hope in hell I had landing a job even if I had the highest graded … A very interesting article about the difficulties of finding a job in the videogame concept art and design industry. However, this article is applicable to all creative industries. The main takeaway? It’s not just about what you know, but who you know. Networking is crucial.

vyvydoan: Searching for My Right Arm DeviantArt || VyVy Doan For my Digital Painting (ILU201) class, we had to create a dynamic pose with a character made out of shapes. Originally I had this bulking fighting pose, but after I fooled around and created the head for this little lady, I ended up with this pose. And no, she isn’t incomplete. She’s just a bit clumsy. So, she really is searching for her right arm. It’s not because I ran out of time to make her strangely intricate hand. Not at all. http://ift.tt/1d9U5jz
