"Born in 1846 in Philadelphia, education activist Caroline LeCount was the first Black woman to pass the city’s teacher’s examination. As principal of a public school, LeCount championed fellow Black educators. When a new principal was needed at the Wilmot Colored School, LeCount recommended one of her teachers, telling the school board that the candidate was “fully qualified” and “colored children should be taught by their own.”

"The aim of school integration in the South was Black and white students sitting side by side, learning and achieving together. That vision of racial balance did not foresee the discrimination and resentment that Black students would encounter in mixed-race schools, according to a new paper by four noted economists.

Despite the widely held ideal about the value of racial balance, the researchers found Black adults who attended mixed-race schools where the enrollment was racially balanced ended up completing fewer years of schooling and were less likely to graduate than peers who attended overwhelmingly white schools or predominantly Black schools. They also were less likely to go on to own homes, a significant factor especially among Black women."

"Dasia Taylor has juiced about three dozen beets in the last 18 months. The root vegetables, she’s found, provide the perfect dye for her invention: suture thread that changes color, from bright red to dark purple, when a surgical wound becomes infected.

The 17-year-old student at Iowa City West High School in Iowa City, Iowa, began working on the project in October 2019, after her chemistry teacher shared information about state-wide science fairs with the class. As she developed her sutures, she nabbed awards at several regional science fairs, before advancing to the national stage. This January, Taylor was named one of 40 finalists in the Regeneron Science Talent Search, the country’s oldest and most prestigious science and math competition for high school senior."

538. That's the total number of shootings that have happened in Philadelphia since January 1st of this year. 146 of those victims range from 9 to 21 years of age. This doesn't even include the shootings that go unreported. This is a true state of emergency. "At first, Ramsey Hootman thought something might be wrong with her son’s school-issued laptop. All of a sudden, most of the browser tabs he’d opened had closed, seemingly of their own accord.

It took a little while to figure out that the culprit was actually a teacher, who’d used a tool called Securly Classroom to view her son’s screen and close out all but two of his tabs—an action that, to both mother and son’s frustration, gunked up an assignment he’d been trying to research.

Remote classroom-management tools like Securly Classroom and its competitors give teachers an expansive, real-time look into what their students are viewing or working on. As Hootman discovered, they also contain a panoply of features, like the ability to freeze a student’s screen, or to call up, block, or limit tabs."

Wednesday, April 6, 2021, one of my former students was murdered. I saw the text and just cried. Cried all day Thursday wondering when will this cycle end? ⁠

It feels like we are in a painful cycle of learning students, loving students, and then watching the world sn**ch them from us. ⁠
