Today we kick-off a process for a self-organised European Citizens’ Conference to take place over the coming 2 years, in which people can have their say about our present and future, and ensure that citizen and civil society participation is at the heart of all new initiatives for the future of Europe.

We need to introduce a fundamental and bottom-up energy to reimagine our relation to Europe at a moment when top-down governance is threatening the idea of European solidarity and risks dividing our societies even further.

The Mayor of Mimmo Lucano was arrested this morning. He is guilty of saving Riace from extinction by welcoming hundreds of refugees. Few days ago he was with us in Berlin presenting how he has managed to govern the city from solidarity despite the continuous pressures and threats, becoming a global example of solidarity. We can't let them win, it is time to mobilize and fight against a fascist government on the rise. In Italy and across Europe.

Illusory Rights on EU MIGRANTS in the UK (Act4FreeMovement)

For decades thousands of people from around the world have made themselves at home in the cosmopolitan and global city of London. It might seem prosperous, but for many people, and migrants in particular, this city can be far from paradise. It is foreign workers who often find themselves at the bottom of the labour market, forced to work long hours for low pay without adequate protections. This also includes EU migrants, many of whom have found themselves on the frontlines of exploitation.

EU citizens face increasing insecurity in their rights, attacks against their persons and even threats of deportation. The nature and the consequences of this insecurity and the drivers of hostility can be different, in particular between Western and Eastern Europe. In the context of the negotiations, we traveled to London to meet the EU workers and activists who are organising themselves to defend their basic rights, including that one of freedom of movement.

Talk Real meets MAKEOUT

How does a society with a lengthy period of socialist experience in its recent past think of the oppresion of women? MAKEOUT is a Belarusian feminist anti-discriminatory project about gender and sexuality that seeks to heighten the awareness, promote mindfulness, and strengthen the LGBTQ-community and other vulnerable groups, which face sexual and gender identity discrimination. We speak with one of her representatives about feminism in contemporary Belarus.

Talk Real in Athens: Rebuilding Refuge Europe

No pool, no room service, and still, the best hotel in Europe. Since 2015, Greece has become a stop on the journey of people fleeing from war, with thousands of peoples from Syria, Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan and Kurdistan. While the governments of the countries of the European Union have been unwilling to respond to the migration movement, City Plaza has become a refuge in Europe, a space to live for 400 refugees, including 100 families and 168 children. Activists and volunteers from different parts of Europe have mobilised to build new cooperations and multicultural forms of coexistence, challenging the barriers between locals and migrants.

ART REAL
New episode from Athens
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jz-6qXHapF8
Talk Real presents ‘Art Real’, a series of episodes on artistic projects and social experiences from grassroots movements that aim to counteract the dominant discourses of crisis and threat in the so-called “refugee crisis” by using art, culture and innovative practices.

In this first episode of the series, Talk Real travels to Athens, one of the places where the economic, political, social, and cultural dilemmas that Europe faces are expressed more broadly, to meet some of the local experiences that are working to create in the city a safe and welcoming place. How are art and artists changing perspectives on migration in the city? What local experiences are self-organising to give responses to the passivity of the institutions? What artistic projects and artists are tackling the refugee emergency through their work?
