Our featured speaker is the amazing Nicholas Kristof, an American journalist, political commentator, and Democratic candidate for Governor of Oregon. A winner of two Pulitzer Prizes, he is a regular CNN contributor and wrote an op-ed column for The New York Times from 2001 to 2021. He is, also, a fervent supporter of the rights of women and girls! The monies raised on our virtual gathering will support the Terrewode Women's Community Hospital in Soroti, Uganda that Lynne Dobson and Sara have worked hard to make the reality that it is today, the only hospital for fistula survivors in Uganda. Please join us to learn more—it’s a free event but any donations you can make will support this important, holistic, healing hospital. Thank you!

Merry Christmas! Thank you with all our hearts to: the doctors and the nurses. Thank you to the medical teams, the EMTs, the anesthesiologists, the ambulance drivers! To the postal workers, delivering in sleet, snow and this pandemic with an overwhelming amount of mail to sort and deliver. Thank you to the grocery store clerks, stockers, baggers, and truckers. Thank you to the farmers providing us with good things to eat! Thank you to the teachers, who love their students so! Thank you to the students and their hard working parents; thank you to the firefighters, soldiers and good officers out there who care about keeping us safe. Thank you to the trash collectors! Thank you to the cooks and chefs making food for the homeless; thank you to the volunteers helping around the world in ways we will never know.

We wish you peace, we wish you love!

Merry Season of love and let’s grow spiritually closer to one another as humans. Kindness is easy!

From Grace Pettis: “When I was 18 or 19, right after I first moved to Austin, the wonderful Sara Hickman liked one of my songs ("Love is There") enough that she ended up recording it on her album, Absence of Blame. At the time, Sara had just been named the State Musician of Texas. I had (and have) so much respect and admiration for her as both an artist and a person. She gave me my first "cut" as a songwriter; that first taste of legitimacy that I desperately needed.

I actually met her when I was a little girl, backstage at one of my dad's shows- I remember her playing me and my brothers the theme song for Sesame Street...

Growing up, whenever I would pester my dad, Pierce Pettis, about wanting to be a musician, he would first try to steer my interests toward something more lucrative ("What about law school? You could be a teacher, you know..."). When that failed, he'd bring up Sara Hickman. He told me that if I really wanted to do this music thing, I couldn't find a better example than Sara. Sara, according to my dad, was not only insanely talented. She was also remarkably nice and the hardest worker he knew.

Grown-up me can attest that all of the hype is well-deserved.

I'm absolutely thrilled to have Sara as our special guest tonight on this episode of on the Nobody's Girl page.

Sara Hickman has a new single release: The Rolling Stones “Salt of the Earth,” which took 4 months to gather remote recordings/video from 32 different amazing Texas musicians. A video is in the works, and will be released, next.

Sara decided to give this group a name: The Hard Working People Project.

This recording is in honor of ALL the hard working people around the world who deserve to be heard, to receive a living wage, to have a home of their own.

Her belief is that everyone deserves a safe, healthy and war free environment with intelligent, compassionate leaders who, truly, care about our freedoms (and don’t waste our time, money or emotional energy.) We have the right to create the peaceful, inclusive and joyful world we want to share.

Here is the beautiful 2015 EP Sara Hickman produced with the African Children's Choir (in Entebbe, Uganda and finished in Austin), which started out with a lot of pre-production here in Austin and working with new musicians and a children's choir in Uganda! Lynne Dobson was the Executive Producer (financial underwriter and tenacious cheerleader!) The a capella songs were written by the children. The songs were practiced outside as much as possible in the warm , Uganadan sunshine but the actual recording was done in the girls' dorm at the African Children's Choir Music for Life compound in Entebbe, interuppted many times by cows or monkeys (at one point, recording was stopped so the kids could go outside and throw rocks to shoo the monkeys off the roof). The choir director was Barbara; the phenomenal musician/singer Price Love played adungu and shared her priceless voice. Sara only had a few days with the choir--with a very patient, positive minded engineer driving an hour every morning, seting up his gear, recording the day's work, then breaking it all down to drive home that evening. There wasn't enough time to do as much music as Sara would have liked, so back in Austin she added additional songs to fill up the EP, including her originals "Don't Give Up", "Hopeful" and "When God Created You," which includes Will Taylor & Strings Attached and Sara's oldest child, Lili, singing harmony. Next in my ATX Musician poster series is my beautiful Mom, Sara Hickman! 🌻

My Mom is a force of nature. She's been playing music for over 40 years and is constantly creating. She takes time to help others around her, speak out, and make a difference with her art. She has pushed through a sexist and ageist industry to provide for my family, and is certainly my hero ❤️

One of my favorite things about my Mom is that she can write a song about pretty much anything! Around her head I’ve used lyrics from all of her albums- from “Tiger in a Teacup” to “Radiation Man”-I’ve included the rainbow of stories that make up my Mother’s work.

My Mom and I are both artists finding ways to financially support ourselves during Quarantine.

My mom is selling posters of these prints on her Bandcamp, and all funds will go towards supporting her and my family.
