Activists in Film Spotlight: KAT COIRO

‘She-Hulk’ and ‘Marry Me’ director Kat Coiro is walking proof that activism in film goes beyond the genre of documentary and can be found anywhere we choose to make a lasting difference in the way we tell stories. On ‘She-Hulk’, Coiro partnered with Habits of Waste on the “Lights, Camera, Plastic” initiative to eliminate single use plastics on set and continues in her environmental efforts to make films sets a more sustainable standard. From replacing craft food items from junk with dyes and preservatives to healthier options, to consciously portraying eco friendly alternatives to plastic on screen, Coiro is tackling change the way she knows it works — influentially, on the screens of millions of individuals at home, absorbing, learning and deciding to make changes in their lives too.

ACTIVISTS IN FILM SPOTLIGHT: NAZA ALAKIJA

Naza Alakija is an Iranian humanitarian and the Founder & CEO of Evoca Foundation, an NGO which works across the pillars of climate action, education and supporting women and girls. Funding grassroots movements that advocate for girls’ access to education and offer holistic solutions to the climate crisis, Naza’s work in humanitarianism led her to the development of film company Evoca Pictures where she produces films that make an impact — like ‘Rise’, the latest short film paying tribute to Mahsa Amini, the 22-year-old Iranian Kurdish woman who died while in police custody for allegedly wearing a loose headscarf.

Naza’s efforts in humanitarianism across a variety of fields make her an incredible activist to watch.

Activists in Film Spotlight: LIN ALLUNA AND AAJU PETER

First seen at Sundance in January, Lin Alluna’s “Twice Colonized” is a documentary that paints a portrait of Inuit lawyer and activist Aaju Peter over the course of seven years. With a mission to protect Indigenous rights and secure a position for Indigenous peoples in European politics, Alluna tracks Peter’s journey through global political activism and her internal journey of the self: the indomitable force of strength that is Peter’s ability to face the vulnerabilities within her own life. A fierce protector of ancestral lands, Peter’s boundless transformation of hardship into affirmative action is captured beautifully by Alluna, who is an inspiring voice for women fighting to change the world.

Announcing our MARCH 2023 pick — ‘S*x and World Peace’ by Valerie M. Hudson, Bonnie Ballif-Spanvill, Mary Caprioli and Chad F. Emmett.

This month’s read is another non-fiction work and it does come with a big trigger warning for graphic details of S.A. and violence, however it is arguably one of the most informative and enlightening texts of the decade. This book takes the lens of a security based discourse in regards to the global safety of women and the relationship between the global security of women, war and world peace. It’s such an important documentation of gender based discrimination and the importance of security for women and marginalized people. The audiobook is also wonderfully narrated if that’s more your style.

Announcing our FEBRUARY 2023 pick — ‘The Education of an Idealist’ by Samantha Power.

This book is an incredibly welcome read amidst Girl North’s transition to champion women in the arts and activism as they intersect. A brilliant author in addition to her many accolades, Samantha Power tells the story of her political career and life, from her humble beginnings as a journalist to her most recent roles: as U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations in which she “worked to negotiate and implement the ambitious Sustainable Development Goals, helped catalyze bold international commitments to care for refugees, and advocated to secure the release of political prisoners, defend civil society from growing repression, and protect the rights of women and girls” (Harvard) and in her current position in the Biden-Harris administration as Administrator of the U.S. Agency for International Development.

Spotlight! Malala Yousafzai is best known for her fierce devotion to activism in girls’ education, but most recently her journey has moved her to the film and media space with the development of her production company Extracurricular Productions. Launched in a first look deal with AppleTV+, the company will produce projects of every genre, that better reflect people and cultures that are not always visible on screen.

In an interview with Fast Company regarding her new company, Malala states, “I am an education activist, but I believe that education is not limited to school: It’s part of everyday life (...) We learn from the TV shows and movies we watch.

Entertainment can help us see what society should look like and what we should aspire to do. And we should never underestimate the power of what everyday life can teach us. That’s why I’ve named my company Extracurricular.”

Spotlight! This year, we’ve been super inspired by the incredible Alice Aedy, a filmmaker, documentarian and climate activist, utilizing her storytelling efforts to support Social Justice initiatives. Alice is the founder and CEO of EarthRise Studio, a production company committed to telling climate-forward stories of hope and possibility. This past year, Alice had feet on the ground in Moldova at the Ukrainian border, profiling the stories of refugees as they fled their home country, she advocated for Indigenous people amidst their resistance movement at the Terra Livre Camp in Brazil, she worked with the International Committee of the Red Cross to further explore links between climate and conflict in Gaza and she attended COP27 as a reinforcement of her commitment to climate justice. Scanning over her insane amount of accomplishments in just one year for the sake of an Instagram spot is an injustice to her service, so be sure to check out all the work she is doing at and .studio.
