Black Mountain got cell service yesterday evening. We're still without power or roads. It's crazy. Trees fell to either side of our house. Our road is totally washed out. We've been cooking on our wood stove and cleaning in the creek like it is 200 years ago. Bridges are out all over the town. The Asheville reservoir lost its integrity and flooded. Another lake just to our west lost its integrity and flooded. Houses have been crushed by floods and mudslides. Power lines and trees are down all over. But we're all safe. Services and crews came in yesterday and we walk into town to get water and food. It's getting slowly better. Black Mountain doesn't think it will get power for weeks - but I think we'll get it back faster. Western North Carolina is a mess. The next towns over to the south - Bat Cave and Lake Lure - have been completely leveled. Emergency helicopters are flying in that direction all day. The next town over to the west - Swannanoa - had their line of stores wiped out by the flooding. Further down the river the Swannanoa River and the French Broad River were 21+ feet above flood level. Charlie, our third kid, is going up to Connecticut to stay with grandparents for at least a week. Cinnamon's mom is in a wheelchair and needs beds lifts and bathroom lifts and help so we're staying in town.
