What’s buzzing at Zeitgeist Press

Dumbstruck at the Lights in the Sky by Bruce Isaacson .poetry.promise & Dogs in Lingerie (expanded edition) by Danielle Willis. These two books have been coming up a lot recently. Dumbstruck at the Lights in the Sky containing some of Bruce Isaacson’s earlier, very impressive work while Dogs in Lingerie has been finding new readership. Danielle Willis has held a devout following and there are even active fan clubs for her and her work. New readership has found Dogs in Lingerie out of stock (we warned you) but a new edition is in the process, rest assured.

What’s buzzing at Zeitgeist Press

These two step well outside the neat packaging of labels, opting more for a bursting fourth of individuality. The writing is a forward breakthrough. The Queen of Shade by Sparrow 13 Laughingwand remains influential for its gritty Q***r scenes pulling no punches while the more recent Ghosts and Oceans by Jan Steckel is the fiction to come. Readers vary on their favorite short pieces within, which is a testament to the book as a whole. These books exemplify Zeitgeist.

What’s buzzing at Zeitgeist Press

These two books were recently making the rounds at readings in the Bay Area.

Anthems of the Doomed
Bruce Isaacsonpoetry.promise

Poetry that’s attentive in these times that possess us and dwell in our hearts. In Anthems of the Doomed, the poet shows how it feels to be human in an age of the ghosted soul. Laughs, loves, losses. These are Selected Poems: 2018-2023. “…a priest and a rabbi and Jean Paul walk into a madhouse and the priest says to Jean Paul that’s not funny who says exactly while the rabbi’s muttering my god, what god…”

A Bouquet of Nails: The Previously Uncollected Poems of David Lerner

This collection shows the many sides of David Lerner, going beyond however people saw him and knew him. Sadness and anger, gritty tenderness, humor, and ever at “his campaign to save poetry from the academic undertakers who claim to love it” as one reviewer put it.

New from Zeitgeist Press!

Why Rimbaud Went to Africa
David Lerner

BACK IN PRINT!

It’s been over 25 years since Why Rimbaud Went to Africa, David Lerner’s 2nd book and most popular during his life, has been available. Included is an afterword by James Norman

The first 20 buyers also get a chapbook of poems read for David at his memorial in 1997.

Here is an EXCERPT of a poem from Why Rimbaud Went to Africa:

The Holocaust

people are starting to look
more and more these days
like those pictures of Jews
marching off to the ovens
to me

the joggers running in
small packs

their fancy little shorts
their even breathing
their worried-over bodies

the young studs strutting down
Montgomery St.
credit card in one hand and
dick in the other
all excellent suits and eyes like cheap marbles

only the bloods lounging sullen and mean
near the fast-food joint

the old chinese who
runs the
cheap grocery on the corner

the beautiful tiny children

only they seem alive

when I meet someone these days
who tells me they’re happy
it usually makes me want to puke
people wallowing in
cars, vacations, furniture, weapons

let’s see, I wonder
which kind of gun is best
for fighting your way out of a
radioactive firestorm?

somebody knows
somebody’s got a brochure
a PO box
a dream

people dream real big these days
that’s the trouble

What’s buzzing at Zeitgeist Press

Make of Me Many Miracles
the collected chapbooks of Eli Coppola
&
The Book of Jerusalem
Julia VInograd

Both these books demonstrate a certain stamina that makes for a fascinating artistic display. In Make of Me Many Miracles, Eli Coppola revisits and edits poems from one chapbook, placing a new version in the next, creating something entirely separate in a way or expanding on an experience, a mindset. Sometimes the beginning or the end goes in a complete direction. Writers can glean a lot from her choices by comparing the pieces that were rewritten.

With The Book of Jerusalem by Julia Vinograd, in this edition, you get the original release of the book plus Jerusalem poems that Julia wrote after. The concept, the ideas and the characters with their voices in this work never quieted. Julia as a writer continued to listen and pen it down.
