A VR newbies first week of rift.....
Ok so after months and months of sitting on the fence about buying a rift I finally bit the bullet. I had been tempted and told I should buy one for ages off fellow sim racers but I was very happy with my current triple setup so never bothered trying the rift.....until the recent offer that has swayed so many of us to trying VR. Off to scan I went and came away with the rift/touch bundle.
Out the box -
Lovely box very well packaged really feels like a high end bit of kit. All the parts are nicely made and ooze quality. There are no instructions but the box simply tells you to go to the oculus setup page and everything is self explanitary from there onwards. It runs you through a download and installation then opens the oculus software. At this point you will make an account then it tells you to plug the HMD and sensor(s) etc. Super simple and easy to follow. Mine was up and running within 20 minutes of opening the box.
First try (iracing) -
I followed the setup guide on the iracing forums to adjust the .ini file which made iracing boot into the rift and got straight into it. Ford Gte at Nurburgring GP. Straight away I was gobsmacked by the immersion factor, I was sat in the car, could read all the gauges and buttons and could look around the car. At one point I reached to pull the window net out of the way 😂. Ok so once I'd got over the cool factor I clicked it into gear and drove out of the pits. Coming into the first corner I completely overshot it and barely stayed on the track. After a few corners in it hit me, I had to completely change the way I drove, this was difficult. Braking points were hard to pick out as were some apexs. This was due to the screen door effect that is the major flaw of the rift. Quality is pretty poor tbh and I was considering putting the rift back in the box and firing up the triples. Other rift users told me I have to persevere to allow my brain and eyes to adapt, the quality wasn't getting any better but eventually my eyes did get used to it and the immersion really makes up for the lack of quality. There were parts of the track were the sunlight shone right onto the drivers legs and it tricked my brain into thinking my legs were getting warm ! Crazy, this is when I knew I was hooked. I did have some trouble going two wide and judging distances and car widths in my first few sessions but I soon got used to that.
Everyday use -
I've only had the rift a few days but I'm really enjoying my sim racing more than ever before. I took part in four 45+ car leauge races on the second day of ownership and it was a huge learning curve, I was a second or so off my normal pace and right in the depths of the pack, racing 3/4 wide at times in huge groups, it was stressful yet so enjoyable and insane. I was in the car ! It was cool being able to look over my shoulder to see were cars were around you. My confidence grew throughout the night and I grew to love the rift over that 3 hour period. Since then I've just been getting more and more time using it and each race I get more and more confident and faster. My brain has now ruled out the whole lack of quality issue, although it's still there it no longer bothers me. The last race I did was a street stock race just to see how the rift felt on an oval and it was the most fun I've had in that class. Really intense and I was able to feel what the car was doing so much better that I could on the screens. Although I'm still along way of the pace I had on the triple screens I'm just not bothered, every race is so much more fun on the rift.
Should you buy one? -
If you have a computer that can support and run the rift then yes ! Go get one, right now! I'm a sucker for great graphics so wasn't sure I'd be happy with it but I really am. This really is next level
Tips from a noob to a noob -
Have a fan pointing at you. Make sure your GPU can handle it (6gb+.) Don't have the rift to tight. Enjoy. If your still undecided go and bug some snorkelling goggles and drive around in them for a while, this is the view you will have in the rift.
