“Journalism is not a crime. It’s a fundamental First Amendment right, and in fact, it’s the only profession that’s explicitly mentioned in the Bill of Rights,” a Public Accountability attorney told the Portland City Council Wednesday. The Council voted to approve a $938,000 legal settlement with independent journalists and legal observers targeted and attacked by police while covering the 2020 racial justice protests.

The city of Portland will pay out $938,330 to settle a lawsuit from journalists and legal observers who were attacked and threatened with arrest for covering the 2020 Black Lives Matter protests in Portland. The legal settlement, approved by the Portland City Council on an 11-1 vote Wednesday, stems...

There’s something very magical realism about walking into a space expecting to experience one thing, only to be met with a fully different sensory onslaught. Bijan Berahimi, the graphic designer and creative behind Portland’s Fisk Gallery, has done just that with his new exhibit, Eyes & Ears: A ...

Good morning, Gaytheist!

Click through to check out Ben Salmon's take on the new 🌈😈 album.

After a dozen or so years with the pedal to the metal, all while hard-rockin’ with uncommon panache, Jason Rivera wasn’t so sure he wanted to keep Gaytheist going. The Portland-based trio had quit their jobs, acquired a van, and booked a 40-date tour across the continent when COVID-19 came along...

Hundreds of Portlanders, fed up with Elon Musk's ongoing initiative to dismantle key parts of the federal government, are gathering for regular "Tesla Takedown" protests at the Portland dealership. Protesters hope to raise awareness about Musk's role in the new Trump administration, and encourage people to fight back through a Tesla boycott.

Hundreds of people gathered outside Portland’s Tesla dealership during the afternoon rush hour on Monday, March 3, chanting and waving signs with messages like “Stop Musk’s coup,” “We Didn’t Elect Elon,” and “Send Elon Musk to Mars.” The roughly 300 protesters stood on both sides o...

Sapience is a great example of Artists Repertory Theatre getting back to one of the things it does best: commissioning and presenting premiere works by contemporary playwrights.

I felt very called out by Sapience, in addition to being emotionally rocked by it. The second full production staged by Artists Repertory Theatre in its newly renovated building—the company still has a ways to go—the new work by Diana Burbano presents a great example of Artists Rep getting back ...

Trash Pandas Assemble! 🦝 It's time for another hilarious edition of THE TRASH REPORT. This week: Trump embarrasses himself (AGAIN), Katy Perry in space, and passing around contagious diseases at the Oscars.

Hi Trash Pandas! Welcome back to the Trash Report. I'm Elinor Jones, and I missed you! I am so happy it's freaking MARCH and even though it still feels wintry outside, and is in fact still winter, last week was a gorgeous sneak peek of spring and I can't wait. Times are dark metaphorically; we don't...

Omar El Akkad's "One Day, Everyone Will Have Always Been Against This" began as a quote tweet about a video showing a bombed city street in Gaza. But the urgent new work that grew from that idea isn't actually about Gaza; it's about the West.

It all began with a tweet. In October 2023, weeks after Israel began bombing Gaza, the writer Omar El Akkad shared a video showing a destroyed city street in Gaza. El Akkad wrote, “One day, when it’s safe, when there’s no personal downside to calling a thing what it is, when it’s too late to...

"My partner was prescribed a boric acid suppository. Will I die if I eat her out?" While this may be a question for poison control, Dan Savage is happy to answer it anyway in this week's edition of SAVAGE LOVE!

I’m a cis man in a monogamous relationship with a cis woman who is going through perimenopause. She was recently prescribed a boric acid suppository to help deal with some normal but persistent vaginal health issues. Her doctor and all the reliable online medical resources we’ve found said we sh...

A group of climate organizations and city residents will challenge Portland's decision to issue a key land use credential to Zenith Energy, filing an intent to appeal with the state Land Use Board of Appeals. Petitioners say the city failed to involve the public in its decision.

The city of Portland may be required to defend its decision to grant Zenith Energy a key land use credential to the Oregon Land Use Board of Appeals (LUBA), following a legal challenge from a coalition of climate organizations and residents. The group of petitioners, which includes climate advocacy....

“My family was surveilled, stripped of their home, livelihood, and dignity,” City Councilor Tiffany Koyama Lane told Portland police officials during discussions about an FBI anti-terrorism task force. “So my question is, how can we work together to make sure that history like this isn’t repeated?”

For years Portland Police Bureau has cooperated with the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force (JTTF), but with a new federal administration intent on broadening the JTTF’s scope and power, city leaders are uneasy about PPB’s arrangement. What seemed like a routine annual report to City Council spa...
