King Tut: The Journey through the Underworld

Begraven in de 14e eeuw voor Christus, maar opgegraven door Howard Carter in 1922, vormen de voorwerpen die bij Toetanchamon zijn begraven een venster van onschatbare waarde op een lang uitgestorven geloofssysteem. Tegenwoordig creëren ze een ingewikkeld beeld van hoe mensen uit die tijd de gevaarlijke reis naar het paradijs zagen, een utopisch Egypte dat pas na het laatste oordeel kon worden betreden.
Toen de veelgeprezen fotograaf Sandro Vannini eind jaren negentig met zijn werk in Egypte begon, stond een technologische revolutie op het punt zich te ontvouwen. Opkomende technologieën stelden hem in staat muurschilderingen, tombes en artefacten tot in ongekend detail te documenteren. Met behulp van de tijdrovende en inspannende multi-shot-techniek produceerde Vannini complete fotografische reproducties die kleuren in hun oorspronkelijke tinten met levendige intensiteit onthulden. Via deze buitengewone beelden ontdekken we de essentiële kenmerken van de objecten, naast de verfijnde en slim verborgen details.

Leidse archeologen hebben samen met collega's uit Egypte en Italië een 3.200 jaar oude tombe ontdekt in de Egyptische dodenstad Sakkara. Het graf komt uit de tijd van de beroemde farao Ramses II, die stierf in 1.213 voor Christus.

To the south of the causeway of King Unas in Saqqara necropolis, the archaeological mission of the Faculty of Archaeology, Cairo University, headed by Ola El-Aguizy, stumbled upon the sarcophagus of Ptahemwia from the reign of King Ramses II, whose tomb was discovered last year in Saqqara.
