The first Chakma to achieve “Padma Shri” award the fourth highest civilian award in the Republic of India.
Smriti Rekha Chakma, a well-known Tripuran Chakma Loinloom Shawl Weaver, has been honored with the prestigious Padma Shri Award for the year 2024. She is recognized for her environmentally conscious Loinloom Artistry. Known as “Chakma’s Rekha,” she has dedicated her life to creating traditional patterns using cotton threads colored with vegetables in an eco-friendly manner. Her introduction to weaving began in childhood, observing her grandmother use ancient Naga techniques. At 63, she not only continues this rich tradition but also imparts her knowledge to the younger generation.
In addition to her weaving skills, Smriti Rekha Chakma has founded “Ujeia Jadha,” a socio-cultural organization that teaches weaving to rural women, aiming to empower them and promote eco-friendly practices. Her efforts have been recognized by the Chief Minister of Tripura, Manik Saha, who congratulated her for promoting traditional patterns and empowering rural women.
Smriti Rekha Chakma’s commitment to sustainable methods and her contribution to the preservation of traditional art forms have made her a deserving recipient of the Padma Shri Award. Her work serves as an inspiration to many, showcasing the importance of preserving cultural heritage and promoting environmental responsibility.
