Eli Durand-McDonnell, 24, was arrested in July 2022 on a charge of disorderly conduct but a local prosecutor later dismissed the charge, saying that the case was a low priority for his office and that prosecutors need to “tread very carefully” when considering whether protected political speech crosses the line into a breach of the peace.

Eli Durand-McDonnell was arrested in July 2022 during protests over Leo’s efforts to have the U.S. Supreme Court overturn federal abortion protections.

With resident concerns rising about the impact of increasing tourism on their town, Bar Harbor is now considering -- after already having limited weekly vacation rentals and cruise ship visits -- whether to put a temporary halt on new tourist lodging development.

Before the pandemic, annual tourists totals for Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park above 3 million were considered high.

Now, for the third year in a row, Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park are on pace to come close to or exceed 4 million visits. The sidewalks and parking lots of the scenic coastal village have been jam packed, many if not most tourist businesses have been understaffed and workers and residents alike are feeling frazzled and fed up.

Tourists flocking to Bar Harbor have caused congested roads and lodging shortages, while putting strain on businesses struggling with staff.

Our story

“Downeast” (sometimes “down east”) originated as a nautical term, referring to the prevailing seasonal direction of wind along the Maine coast. Sailors going “downwind” have the wind at their backs, while those going “upwind” face into it, so “downeast” means sailing downwind, east along Maine’s coast, moved along by typical summer winds.

Modern usage of the term refers more to a simple direction than it does to its nautical or weather-related origins. If you are traveling east along the coast, which far more people do now via Route 1 than they do by boat, then you are headed downeast.

But what part of the coast is “downeast?” That depends on where along the shore you are standing when you point toward New Brunswick. Boothbay is downeast from Freeport, Rockland downeast from Boothbay, Stonington downeast from Rockland, etc.

Here at the BDN, from our main office in downtown Bangor, “downeast” is pretty much anything toward the rising sun on the eastern side of the Penobscot River. Our reporter in that part of the state is Bill Trotter. You can find links to his stories about Hancock and Washington counties, or others about the region written by other BDN staff writers, here on our Downeast page.
