Vulnerability is a scary thing for many of us to show. We feel weak and overexposed but the fact of the matter is, you’re not. It’s all about stepping into your greatness with bravery and courage and showing people who you really are, not who you think they want to see.

Healing requires the shutting of old doors and the opening of new doors.
To shut the door of comfort and open the door of conversation is a very courageous and necessary process that can lead to the best outcome.

Keep moving forward warriors. Healing is on the other side of this Valley.

Your trauma is unique, but your story is universal. The more we share our stories the more people we help. We all carry something into every call. An airpack, the irons, a taser and gun, flashlight, a radio…..you name it. Each tool is useful and has its’ purpose. It’s what we all carry out of the call I’m concerned about. For the longest time we have shrugged off our traumas….”I just did my job”. The time has come to treat these experiences for what they truly are…

🐄 or 🦬?
When an incoming storm approaches, cows run away — which ultimately means they spend more time in the worst of it. Buffalo, on the other hand, charge directly into the storm. By running straight through it, they minimize the time they spend in it and the pain they suffer. Top-performing leaders and salespeople follow the same instincts as the buffalo. They choose the direct path through the storm, because they know that when you try to avoid a problem, you only end up amplifying it.

All of us are dealing with the same storm right now. How will you emerge on the other side? Will you be a cow…or a buffalo?

5 Signs of trauma,
First Responders may experience one or all of these symptoms.

1. Hyperarousal: First responders who have experienced trauma may exhibit signs of hyperarousal, such as being constantly on edge, easily startled, or having difficulty sleeping. They may also have an exaggerated startle response or be constantly scanning their environment for potential threats.

2. Avoidance: Trauma can lead to avoidance behaviors, where first responders actively avoid situations or triggers that remind them of the traumatic event. This may include avoiding certain locations, activities, or even people associated with the trauma. They may also avoid discussing or thinking about the event.

3. Intrusive thoughts or flashbacks: First responders who have experienced trauma may have intrusive thoughts or flashbacks related to the traumatic event. These can be distressing and may occur unexpectedly, causing the individual to re-experience the trauma as if it were happening again. They may also have nightmares or vivid dreams related to the event.

4. Emotional numbing: Trauma can lead to emotional numbing, where first responders may feel detached or emotionally distant from others. They may have difficulty experiencing positive emotions or may feel a general sense of emptiness. They may also have difficulty connecting with loved ones or engaging in activities they once enjoyed.

5. Changes in behavior or mood: Trauma can cause significant changes in behavior and mood. First responders may become irritable, angry, or have sudden outbursts of emotion. They may also experience feelings of guilt, shame, or self-blame related to the traumatic event. Additionally, they may engage in risky behaviors, such as substance abuse, as a way to cope with their trauma.

If you or someone you know is experiencing these behaviors. Please reach out. Start a conversation, there are people who understand and can help.

Overcoming trauma as a first responder in a rural area can be challenging due to various factors such as limited resources, isolation, and the close-knit nature of the community. However, there are several strategies that can help in overcoming trauma and building resilience:

1. Seek support: Reach out to colleagues, supervisors, or other first responders who have experienced similar situations. Sharing your experiences and emotions with others who understand can provide validation and support.

2. Professional counseling: Consider seeking professional counseling or therapy to process traumatic events. A therapist can help you develop coping mechanisms and provide a safe space to discuss your experiences.

3. Peer support programs: Participate in peer support programs specifically designed for first responders. These programs often provide a platform for sharing experiences, learning from others, and receiving emotional support.

4. Self-care: Prioritize self-care activities such as exercise, healthy eating, and getting enough sleep. Engaging in hobbies, spending time with loved ones, and practicing relaxation techniques like meditation or deep breathing can also help reduce stress.

5. Education and training: Stay updated on the latest trauma management techniques and attend training sessions or workshops that focus on building resilience. This can help you feel more prepared and confident in handling future traumatic events.

6. Establish boundaries: Recognize your limits and set boundaries to prevent burnout. It's important to know when to take breaks, ask for help, or delegate tasks to others.

7. Engage in stress-reducing activities: Find activities that help you relax and unwind, such as spending time in nature, practicing mindfulness, or engaging in creative outlets like painting or writing.

8. Foster a support network: Build relationships with other members of the community, both within and outside of the first responder community. Having a strong support network can provide a sense of belonging and help combat feelings of isolation.

9. Reflect and debrief: Take time to reflect on your experiences and emotions after traumatic events. Participate in debriefing sessions with colleagues to discuss the incident, share feelings, and learn from each other's perspectives.

10. Recognize signs of distress: Be aware of the signs of distress in yourself and others. If you or a colleague are experiencing symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, or anxiety, seek professional help promptly.

Remember, overcoming trauma takes time, and everyone's healing process is unique. It's essential to be patient with yourself and seek help when needed.

First responders, including police officers, firefighters, paramedics, and healthcare workers, Dispatchers often work on Thanksgiving to ensure the safety and well-being of the community. They understand that emergencies can happen at any time, and their dedication to their profession means they are willing to sacrifice time with their families to serve and protect others.

These brave men and women work tirelessly to respond to emergencies, accidents, and medical crises that may occur during the holiday. They are on call 24/7, ready to handle any situation that arises, regardless of the day or time.

Working on Thanksgiving can be challenging for first responders, as they miss out on spending time with their loved ones and enjoying traditional holiday festivities. However, they are committed to their duty and understand the importance of their role in keeping the community safe.

Their dedication and sacrifice deserve recognition and gratitude from the community. Many people express their appreciation by delivering meals to fire stations, police departments, and hospitals on Thanksgiving, acknowledging the hard work and commitment of these first responders.

So, while many people are enjoying their Thanksgiving meals and spending time with family and friends, first responders are out there, ready to respond to emergencies and ensure the safety and well-being of the community. Their selflessness and dedication are truly commendable, and they deserve our utmost respect and gratitude.

We thank you and pray for your safety and wellbeing. God Bless you.

Signs and Symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). It's crucial to understand these signs, as they can help us recognize and support those who may be struggling with this condition. So, let's dive in and learn together!

1️⃣ Re-experiencing the trauma: People with PTSD may have distressing memories, flashbacks, or nightmares related to the traumatic event. These intrusive thoughts can be overwhelming and make them feel as if they are reliving the experience.

2️⃣ Avoidance and emotional numbing: Individuals with PTSD often try to avoid anything that reminds them of the trauma. This can include avoiding certain places, people, or activities. They may also experience a sense of emotional detachment, feeling numb or disconnected from others.

3️⃣ Hyperarousal and increased anxiety: PTSD can lead to heightened levels of anxiety and constant feelings of being on edge. This can manifest as irritability, difficulty concentrating, trouble sleeping, and being easily startled. They may also experience a sense of hypervigilance, always being on the lookout for potential threats.

4️⃣ Negative changes in mood and cognition: PTSD can cause significant changes in a person's mood and thought patterns. They may experience persistent negative emotions, such as guilt, shame, or fear. Additionally, they may have trouble remembering important aspects of the traumatic event or have distorted beliefs about themselves or the world.

5️⃣ Physical symptoms: PTSD can also manifest in physical symptoms such as headaches, stomachaches, muscle tension, and increased heart rate. These physical manifestations are often a result of the body's response to stress and anxiety.

Remember, these signs and symptoms can vary from person to person, and not everyone will experience them in the same way. If you or someone you know is exhibiting these signs, it's essential to seek professional help. Mental health professionals can provide the necessary support and guidance to manage PTSD effectively.

Let's create a safe and understanding environment where we can support one another through difficult times. If you have any questions or want to share your thoughts, feel free to comment below. Together, we can make a difference!

🚨 Su***de Prevention in Our First Responder Community 🚑👮‍♀️🚒

I want to shed light on a crucial topic that often goes unnoticed: su***de prevention within our first responder community. Our firefighters, police officers, paramedics, and other emergency personnel face immense stress and trauma daily, making it essential for us to support them in every way possible. Here are some important facts and resources to help raise awareness and provide assistance:

1️⃣ The reality: First responders are at a higher risk of experiencing mental health challenges, including depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The nature of their work exposes them to traumatic incidents, long hours, and emotional strain, which can take a toll on their mental well-being.

2️⃣ Warning signs: It's crucial to recognize the signs that someone may be struggling with their mental health. These signs can include withdrawal from social activities, changes in behavior or mood, increased substance abuse, difficulty sleeping, or expressing feelings of hopelessness. If you notice any of these signs in a first responder colleague or loved one, it's important to take action.

3️⃣ Support is key: As a community, we must create an environment where first responders feel comfortable seeking help without fear of judgment or stigma. Encourage open conversations about mental health, actively listen to their concerns, and offer support whenever possible. Remember, it's okay not to have all the answers, but being there for someone can make a world of difference.

4️⃣ Resources available: There are numerous organizations dedicated to supporting the mental health of first responders. Some notable ones include the National Su***de Prevention Lifeline (1-800-273-TALK), the Crisis Text Line (text "HELLO" to 741741), and the First Responder Support Network (www.frsn.org). These resources provide confidential assistance and guidance to those in need.

5️⃣ Self-care matters: If you're a first responder, it's crucial to prioritize your own mental well-being. Take time for self-care, engage in activities that bring you joy, and seek professional help if needed. Remember, you can't pour from an empty cup, and taking care of yourself allows you to better serve others.

Let's come together as a community and ensure that our first responders receive the support they deserve. By spreading awareness, offering assistance, and promoting a culture of understanding, we can make a positive impact on their mental health. Together, we can save lives and make a difference. 💙🌟

💪 Overcoming First Responder cPTSD 💪

Hey friends! Today, I want to shed light on an important topic that often goes unnoticed: First Responder cPTSD. 🚑🔥🚔🪖🩺🎧

First responders are the unsung heroes who selflessly put their lives on the line to protect and serve our communities. They face unimaginable challenges and witness traumatic events that can leave lasting emotional scars. But here's the thing: they arenot alone in their journey towards healing and recovery. 💚

To all the brave first responders out there who may be struggling with cPTSD, I want you to know that you are stronger than you realize. 💪 You have already proven your resilience by stepping up to the plate and dedicating your lives to helping others. Now, it's time to focus on your own well-being and find the strength to heal.

✨ Here are a few motivational reminders for those on the path to overcoming First Responder cPTSD:

1️⃣ You are not defined by your trauma. Your experiences may have shaped you, but they do not define who you are as a person. You are so much more than the pain you've endured.

2️⃣ It's okay to ask for help. Seeking support from professionals, fellow first responders, or support groups can be a game-changer. Remember, reaching out is a sign of strength, not weakness.

3️⃣ Practice self-care. Prioritize your mental and physical well-being. Engage in activities that bring you joy, relaxation, and peace. Take time to recharge and nurture yourself.

4️⃣ Celebrate small victories. Recovery is a journey, and progress may not always be linear. Acknowledge and celebrate even the smallest steps forward. Each one is a testament to your strength and determination.

5️⃣ Surround yourself with a supportive network. Lean on your loved ones, friends, and colleagues who understand and empathize with your experiences. Their support can make a world of difference.

Remember, healing takes time, and it's okay to have setbacks along the way. You are not alone in this journey, and there is hope for a brighter future. 💫

Let's come together as a community to raise awareness about First Responder cPTSD and support those who have dedicated their lives to protecting us. 🌍💙

If you know a first responder who may benefit from this message, please share it with them. Together, we can make a difference! 🤝

🌟💙 Honoring Our Heroes: First Responders' Mental Health Awareness 💙🌟

Today, let's take a moment to acknowledge the incredible strength and resilience of our first responders. These brave men and women selflessly put their lives on the line every day to protect and serve our communities. But behind their unwavering courage lies a hidden battle that often goes unnoticed: their mental health.

It's easy to forget that these heroes are not invincible. They witness unimaginable tragedies, endure high-stress situations, and carry the weight of our collective safety on their shoulders. They sacrifice their own well-being to ensure ours. Yet, they rarely get the recognition they deserve for the emotional toll it takes.

Today, let's come together as a community to raise awareness about the mental health challenges faced by our first responders. Let's remind them that it's okay to not be okay, that seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness.

To our brave firefighters, who rush into burning buildings without hesitation, we see your pain and we stand with you. Your courage inspires us all.

To our dedicated police officers, who protect and serve with unwavering commitment, we recognize the emotional burden you carry. We are here for you.

To our compassionate paramedics and EMTs, who provide life-saving care in the most critical moments, we understand the toll it takes on your mental well-being. You are not alone.

Let's break the stigma surrounding mental health in the first responder community. Let's encourage open conversations, provide resources, and support those who dedicate their lives to keeping us safe.

If you know a first responder, take a moment to reach out and let them know you appreciate their sacrifices. Offer a listening ear, a shoulder to lean on, or simply a heartfelt "thank you." Your support can make a world of difference.

Together, we can ensure that our heroes receive the care and support they need. Let's honor their bravery by advocating for their mental well-being. 💙🌟

We HAVE to smash this stigma, and our stories of our survival, can bring down walls of this stigma.
Some stories are held close. For fear of judgment, embarrassment and fear in general. And many other reasons. We lived behind the words “I’m fine” until we weren’t.
We battled the sleepless nights, the intrusive thoughts, the low self-esteem, anxiety, depression and so much more. Just so we wouldn’t look weak, and unable to perform our jobs.

We fought for our life in the ditch. Did compressions on an infant and made a death notification. All in one shift. Then go home and play the role of husband, dad, son, friend and whatever else you can think of. When asked how was “work” we simply say it was “alright” and pretend we are unfazed by it all.

We find ways to be “numb” till that no longer works. We carry the faces of the unsaved. The screams of the mothers who lost their children. The weight of our uniforms is way heavier than fabric should be.

I’ve been in the bottle. I’ve pretended everything was fine. I kept it all in. From not knowing what I was feeling. To being ashamed I was feeling it.
After years in this journey, I’m hoping my story reaches someone. So that may not get to the darkest corners of their life.

If you have a story you would like to share. Please reach out.
If you just need someplace to sit and talk. I’m here. No one knows who and who I don’t talk to.

If you have read this, please share this post. Just to show you support smashing the stigma. And you support the fight our first responders are fighting.
