When Sinto Django Reinhardt was born in Liverchies, Belgium in 1910, something like a counter-proposal emerged in Paris in the mid-thirties to the still young fledgling American jazz scene: a young impetuous and virtuoso playing guitarist who despite an accidental handicapped left hand played phenomenal runs, had a tremendous harmonic repertoire and with the ability to hear orchestral nuances, became a more than impressive composer.

Unlike the jazz musicians in the US, Reinhardt was not influenced by the blues, but rather by the European Classics of the Impressionists, such as Ravel and Debussy.

This gave his playing something unheard of ... the melodic quality of the lines are so powerful that Reinhardt influenced and shaped a large group of American guitarists. The performance of the guitarist changes several times and one not only hears the artistic change; but also perhaps the desperation with which Django tries to follow the rapidly changing jazz despite his disability. The artistic work that we have today from this respected musician also comes from Sinto’s humorous personality, traveling and wild conduct, whose unpredictability became legendary. Shortly before his death on May 10, 1953, the jazz world experienced a serene and at that time modern jazz musician, ready to undergo further transformation.

Friday, April-27 a lecture about Django Reinhardt is taken place in the Dot Time Listening Room Bremen. Based on selected tracks from LP, Bremerhaven jazz guitarist Jörg Seidel presents the works of Django Reinhardt and tells a few stories and anecdotes from his life. The first part deals primarily with Reinhardt's recordings, while the second part introduces musicians who have inherited his legacy.

Doors open 7:30pm, Lecture starts 8pm. The events entry is based on donation.

Our Thanks to MINT Magazine and Lothar Brandt for their excellent review of Louis Armstrong: The Standard Oil Sessions Vinyl release: Read the English translation here.

Louis Armstrong
The Standard Oil Sessions
One of the greatest musicians of all time in his peak form - so far only released on CD, now available as a new restoration. Even though some are diminishing his role to a jester: Armstrong had been one of the greatest musicians who ever blessed this planet. In January 1950, the oil company Standard Oil invited the band leader plus his All-Stars - with pianist Earl “Fatha” Hines leading the way as well as trombonist and vocalist Jack Teagarden - to a session in San Francisco. Lyle Johnson played clarinet, Clancy Hayes was on the guitar.
Sadly, author of the Liner Notes, Ricky Ricardi, didn’t ascertain who played bass and percussions. Those sessions were originally meant as a radio broadcast but never aired for unknown reasons. Fortunately, the sound engineers recorded the session on so-called acetates. Those soundwise inadequate vinyl records of Amstrong’s private collection were dubbed carefully; with great effort and approval of the Louis Armstrong House Museum, New York City. Naturally, residual noises and crackling sounds remain, but most of the songs are freed from them, the others are not disturbed by them.
The CD was already released in spring 2017, and the vinyl recording is identically to the content which was mastered by jazz professional Caspar Sutton-Jones at London’s specialist Gearbox ( see also Wild Ponies, page 147 ). This record though makes jazz fans smile about Teagarden’s laid-back vocal contributions. Nevertheless, the real star was Armstrong. New Orleans jazz standard Up The Lazy River or southern states classic Basin’ Street Blues are played by him with force and sophistication, modern-day professional trumpeters could learn a thing or two from it. The bright sound of the instrument outshines everything so that limiting itself to mono has still no impact on the recordings.
