More on "the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation" or AMOC, the earth’s crucial and complex ocean system, and the recent scientific report on the threat of its collapse as human greenhouse gas emissions accelerate climate change.

Research shows that the Atlantic Ocean’s sensitive circulation system is in danger, but scientists still don’t know how close it is to collapse.

Shared from the Arctic Circle Journal: "Dozens of fires were still out of control on October 24, but winter weather is expected to suppress most of them. However, even winter may not be enough in some cases. Previous research shows that overwintering ‘zombie’ fires in this region have increasingly begun to smolder underground throughout the winter and remerge in the spring as temperatures rise."

Shared from High North News: The cooled relations between Russia and the West have affected the Council greatly since the 7 Western Arctic states paused all official work within the Council until Norway took over leadership of the Council last May.

"We need to keep all political options open, including a withdrawal from the Arctic Council," says Russia's Arctic Ambassador, Nikolay Korchunov.

January 31, 2024 – London, UK— Indigenous rights have been affirmed during the negotiations last week at the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in a fundamental way. Articles 29, 41, 42 of the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, which emphasize the importance of environmental protection, utilization for harvesting, and the responsibility of states to apply the UN Declaration, were included in the Action Plan to reduce underwater radiated noise from shipping. The Inuit Nunaat Guidelines were also re-affirmed and widely accepted by the global maritime community.

"What the models tell us is, if we fail to make meaningful reductions in carbon emissions and move away from fossil fuels, we can create a dystopian future that resembles some of the most dire events that we see in the past, mass extinction events. That's a possible future if we don't act. But if we do act, we can certainly avert that sort of future. So the message is indeed one of urgency — we do need to take far more action than we've taken so far — and agency. It's not too late to act to prevent the worst consequences." — Michael Mann

We talk with eminent climate scientist Michael Mann about climate, past, present and future. His book is Our Fragile Moment: How Lessons from Earth’s Past Can Help Us Survive the Climate Crisis.

Interesting article by author and documentarist, Andri Snær Magnason, whose latest bestseller, On Time and Water, has been referred to as a unique eye-opener on Climate change.
Here, he discusses the recent and ongoing volcanic activity on the Reykjanes peninsula, stating: "We are entering a new volcanic era in Iceland – one that may be more challenging than anything that has occurred in the past 800 years."

For a long time, eruptions were a spectacle that drew tourists but caused little damage. But it’s clear we haven’t tamed nature, says Icelandic writer and film-maker Andri Snær Magnason

"The international exchange and building of connections have always been important part in any science. However, now in Russia, the situation is different - many scientists are leaving for good. First of all, as experts point out, the colossal brain drain is due to the increasing isolation of Russia and the total persecution of dissent."

At least 2,500 scientists have left Russia since February 24, 2022, the online publication Novaya Gazeta Europe reports based on their research.

"Exceptionally warm ocean temperatures have melted sea ice off Alaska’s coasts far earlier than normal this year, alarming scientists and rural residents worried about the impacts to seals, seabirds and fish they hunt.

The early melting has been "crazy,” said Janet Mitchell of the village of Kivalina in Northwest Alaska.

In early June, a group of hunters from her family traveled more than 50 miles by boat to find bearded seals on the ice. The ice, and the seals that accompany it, should have been just outside the village. But the ice had receded far to the north.

“We didn’t know if we’d have our winter food," she said. “That was scary.""
