Moyo emphasized the importance of Farmer Business Schools which cascade modern farming technologies in the wake of climate change.

Ntcheu-based Tivekeni Initiative has embarked on a youth-led campaign under its Look-sharp project to raise awareness on social ills affecting young people around Sharpevale in the area of iNkosi Ganya in the district.

The initiative’s director Elias Matope notes that teen pregnancies, school dropouts, drug and substance abuse remains a major concern that requires their voices to ably address the vice.

Matope said this today during a cultural day where he called on the young people to always be agent of change to the challenges.

Headteacher for Sharpevale Primary School, Philos Palanjeta expects the community leaders and parents to join the campaign in building a generation which will effectively contribute to the country’s development.

Meanwhile, Sharpevale Police Post Station Officer, Geoffrey Kamwendo, says a well informed society is key in curbing criminal activities and often involves the youths.

The Malawi Human Rights Commission (MHRC) has halted a public hearing on allegations of sexual harassment and abuse at the MRA, PPDA and Chambo Girls Academy to protect the victims who were interested to testify on the matter.

MHRC Chairperson Commissioner Chikondi Chijozi told Zodiak online today that instead they have resorted to bilateral meetings with the institutions beginning January next year to assess compliance on gender equality act and sexual harassment policy, among others.

MHRC closed receiving submissions and expression of interest from people to testify during a public hearing on allegations of sexual harassment and abuse at the three institutions on August 30 this year.

Meanwhile, gender rights activist Jessie Ching’oma thinks that raising awareness about sexual harassment in workplaces is key to address the problem.

MHRC was established under section 129 of the Malawi’s Constitution with primary function of protecting and investigating violations of the rights accorded by the Constitution or any other law.

Mayor for Zomba city council, councillor Christopher Jana has added voice to the calls of extending voter registration period.

In an interview with Zodiak Online, Councillor expressed concern on what described as deliberate de enfranchisement of eligible voters rights by Malawi Electoral Commission and National Registration Bureau.

He claimed that most people have been denied to register due to technical complications, a development he said may have detrimental repercussions politically.

Former presidents Peter Mutharika and Joyce Banda, including Vice president Michael Usi and some prominent political, religious and civic leaders have also asked authorities to consider extension of voter registration exercise, citing massive botch of the exercise.

Second phase of registration ended yesterday in Zomba and other areas.

The CAMFED Malawi says it has managed to support almost 2, 000 students to tertiary level in the country for the past eight years.

The organization's executive director, Susan Silika disclosed that from 2016, they have through the Mastercard Foundation assisted four cohorts of vulnerable girls to pursue secondary and university education.

Silika made the remarks today at the Malawi University of Science and Technology (MUST) where they have hosted the last cohort of 300 girls at the camp after being selected to tertiary institutions.

She says beside encouraging the girls to give back to their community, the camp orients them on life skills, mental and sexual reproductive health to manage any pressure at school.

One of the students, Abigail Phiri who has been selected to study nursing and midwifery at the Kamuzu University of Health Sciences (KUHES) believes she would have been married by now if it was not for the organization's project.

The DPP and the UTM have become the latest to endorse demonstrations and vigils planned by the Center for Democracy and Economic Development Initiatives (CDEDI) against government's handling of the current fuel shortage and other issues.

In a statement issued today, DPP Secretary General Peter Mukhitho says failure by the government to address critical issues has put Malawians under a heavy burden.

UTM spokesperson, Felix Njawala, has called on authorities to respect and protect the constitutional rights of those that will take part in the demonstrations this Monday.

CDEDI has organized the protests to force energy minister Ibrahim Matola and MERA boss Henry Kachaje resign for alleged failure to address the fuel crisis facing Malawi.

It also wants MEC to cancel the use of Electoral Management Devices by Smartmatic International in the next polls. The demos come after some panga wielding bouncers foiled planned protests by the opposition political parties over similar concerns.
