A grouping of concerned employees for the Christian Health Association of Malawi (CHAM) says it will on Monday next week hold a vigil at the association head office over unpaid salary arrears.

In a letter, chairperson for the grouping, Ted Kazembe, told Zodiak Online today that over 200 employees were missed during the migration of the payroll to the government system in 2023.

Kazembe says in April this year, they engaged CHAM officials over the outstanding issues, which range from unpaid salaries to underpayment and delayed processing of the salary arrears, but nothing has materialized.

He says they will leave the association's head office after receiving their money, adding they have waited for too long.

CHAM's executive director, Happy Makala, says the association, in collaboration with the government's relevant departments, is working tirelessly to ensure all claims of salary arrears and underpayments are resolved.

The National Economic Empowerment Fund (NEEF) Head of operations, Kisa Kalolokesya says the eastern region is owing the institution K3.9 billion in loans.

Kalolokesya says despite disbursing K17.9 billion to 32,382 people in five districts of Ntcheu, Balaka , Zomba , Mangochi and Machinga, only K11.1 billion has been collected so far.

He said this during a consultative meeting with local leaders in Ntcheu where he disclosed that out of the owed amount, the district has outstanding arrears of K655 million from the total disbursed K2.5 million.

District council’s chairperson Flanes Kampeni and iNkosi Njolomole have committed to shoulder the responsibility of sensitizing the masses in repaying the outstanding loans for the benefit of other would-be beneficiaries in the district.

As of August 20th, 2024 NEEF has disbursed K128.6 billion in loans benefiting 182,901 clients across all its five regions.

An annual general meeting for the Copyright Society of Malawi (COSOMA) has today ended abruptly in Lilongwe after members protested against the appointment of Reverend Chimwemwe Mhango as chairperson of the board.

Eleven rights holder associations wondered how Rev. Mhango found himself as board chairperson when he lost during nomination time last year, hence demanding his recusal from the proceedings of the AGM.

"I understand what you are going through; I also once went the same way, it's not palatable, but I am urging you to stay put. If I leave now, it means I am demeaning the person who appointed me." Said Reverend Mhango in response to the calls.

Nevertheless, the members put their feet down, saying Mr. Mhangos' appointment marked all features of illegality.

The Forum for African Women Educationalists in Malawi - FAWEMA says more needs to be done in ensuring that young people are involved in decision making on matters affecting them.

FAWEMA Monitoring and Evaluation Manager, Thokozani Phiri, observed that in some instances conference on issues to do with young people are dominated by adults thereby, giving limited space for the targeted people to express themselves.

She was speaking in Nkhotakota today when briefing district stakeholders on progress made in implementation of the Addressing the Learning Crisis through Systems Strengthen Project which has objectives that include empowering young people to advocate for their rights in education.

Through the project, three young people represented Malawi recently at the 6th Southern Africa Youth Forum (SAYOF) conference held in Zimbabwe where they made demands such as that countries should ensure they provide adequate finances to the education sector.

Nkhotakota District Youth Officer, Aberson Mwale commended the organisation for strengthening the youth network system in the district through the project.

Beit Cure Children's Hospital of Malawi is looking for K210 million to conduct surgeries on 80 children with treatable disabilities.

The Hospital Acting Executive Director, Ezekiel Milelu, told journalists today that most of these children are spotted in hard-to-reach areas across the country and taken to Blantyre for treatment.

Meanwhile, First Capital Bank (FCB) has donated K40 million to the hospital to treat and care for the children.

FCB Head of Marketing, Twikale Chirwa, hopes their support will assist in building a strong future workforce in line with the 2063 vision.

Beit Cure is expecting to treat 2,300 children this year, with the funding of 2,200 patients already mobilized.

Thyolo District Commissioner Hudson Kuphanga has warned that he will send parking SICO civil contractors should it continue delaying construction of a K1.4 billion Namalowa multi-purpose dam.

Kuphanga said this today after inspecting the construction of the facility, advising the contractor to double efforts to ensure that the project is completed within the stipulated time mark of October 30, 2024.

Kuphanga, while underscoring the importance of the project towards eradicating food insecurity in the area of Traditional Authority Changata, says the World Bank has indicated that it will pull out support once the council fails to meet the six-month project timelines.

The company's engineer, Precious Chamasowa, says they have devised an acceleration plan to work with speed, explaining that they were delayed due to the redesigning of the project.

Namalowa Water Users Association secretary Vincent Mulume says they are expecting transformed livelihoods and food security for over 90 farm families in the area once the project completes.

Agriculture authorities in Mangochi have disclosed that 36 percent of households in the district are food insecure this year.

Director of agriculture for the district, Nditani Maluwa, says the people are hit by several climatic shocks in the past years but says the percentage has declined from the past three years after implementing several interventions.

Speaking on the sidelines of a road show by the Centre for Social Accountability and Transparency in Traditional Authority Lulanga on the right to food project, Maluwa disclosed that they have distributed 33 solar-powered water pumps to schemes to counter the hunger.

Project Officer at CSAT Jacob Phiri said this morning that this is in line with the right to food ambitions.

CSAT is implementing the project together with CISANET in Sub-T/A Mambo and T/A Lulanga in Mangochi with support from the German government through Welthungerhilfe.

After the roll call, speaker of Parliament, Catherine Gotani Hara, has given a rather linient ruling that those members of Parliament who were late be allowed in and that deliberations should continue.

It is not an excuse for members to be late for deliberations especially considering that they use public funds which they are supposed to account for.

With additional members, who reported late, allowed in the chamber, the government side now has 51 members with 59 on the opposition benches.

Even that is not a good turn out for people using taxpayers funds.

Parliament has resumed deliberations this morning in Lilongwe with only 43 of its 193 members; 20 on the government-side and 22 on the opposition benches.

At least six cabinet ministers: including Richard Chimwendo Banda, minister of Local Government who is also leader of the house, minister of health Khumbize Kandodo Chiponda, minister of Lands Daus Gumba, minister of homeland security Ken Zikhale Ng'oma, minister of Trade Sosten Gengwe and minister of Labour Agnes Nya Lonje are there.

Absenteeism of MPs in the house during the current seating has been a concern.

Member of Parliament for Nkhata-Bay Central Symon Vuwa Kaunda has since moved a motion for roll call which is currently underway.

Mchinji Sacco has reiterated the need to provide adequate financial support to Malawian farmers in order to maximize productivity which in turn can sustain the country's food security.

Mchinji Sacco manager Michael Mangani said this on Wednesday following a visit by Financial Inclusion and Entrepreneurship Scaling (FInES) Project officials to appreciate how they are utilising the FInES loan.

According to Mangani, the K100 million which they got from FInES through Malawi Agricultural and Investment Corporation (MAIIC) is not enough considering the high demand for borrowing by most farmers in the district hence the call.

FInES Financial Services Development Specialist Hastings Mzoma expressed satisfaction on how the Sacco has utilised the K100 million loan to improve people's livelihoods in the district.

One of the Sacco beneficiaries Eliya Kholowa of Nkhunguyembe told us that the K3 million loan he obtained through the Sacco has assisted him to maximise his produce in maize, soybean and cassava.

A 45-year-old traffic police officer working with Namwera Police Post in Mangochi has died following a motorcycle accident last evening along Bakili Muluzi highway.

Mangochi police station spokesperson Inspector Amina Tepani Daudi has identified the officer as Sub Inspector Cliff Kokha from Chonde village, Traditional Authority Chimaliro in Thyolo district.

Inspector Daudi said Khoka, who was on his Yamaha DT motorcycle registration number BR 4783, collided with another.

"Majidu, who was riding an unregistered Lifo motorcycle, had swerved from the road to avoid a rumble strip near Sumaili village but failed to signal when re-entering the main road, causing the collision with Kokha, who was behind him," said Inspector Daudi.
