📣📣Update time📣📣
(and it's a BIG one!)

Submissions, flash fiction, fundraising, and a radio program!

1⃣ We'll be open for submissions for the print magazine from August 5-10. This will be the first issue of Volume 2!

If you have a story to send us (get writing now if you don't!) be sure to check out our submission guidelines here (https://silenceandstarsong.com/submission-guidelines). We're excited to put together another collection of great stories for Fall 2024.

2⃣ We really want to make sure this next issue of Silence & Starsong Magazine is the best one yet, but we also want to keep improving the quality of what we're putting out for readers. That means continuing to offer good rates to authors, but also adding more professional artwork.

To make that happen, we've set up a fundraising campaign on Indiegogo. Check out the pre-launch page here (https://indiegogo.com/projects/silence-starsong-magazine-volume-2/coming_soon/x/37845247) and think about whether you might be able to support us.

More details will be coming very soon and if you sign up you can be notified when the campaign officially launches. Even if you don't have any spare funds to help us right now, you can still be a part of the campaign just by sharing it on social media.

3⃣ We're also excited to announce the launch of Silence & Starsong Radio! This is an audio program that will offer unique content as well as readings of some of the flash fiction contest winners.

You can listen to the first full-length episode, "American Necropolis," now on:
* Spotify (https://open.spotify.com/show/1ealJMMh46KLPoQRK1SO4H?si=37159bef2f5f4f32),

* YouTube (https://youtube.com/),

*or your favorite podcast app with the RSS feed (https://anchor.fm/s/f64b9b54/podcast/rss).

Maybe you also have friends who aren't big readers, but still enjoy the kinds of stories you've read in the pages of Silence & Starsong? Then this show might be just the thing for them.

4⃣ Last but not least, we have an ongoing flash fiction contest. The prompt is in the picture below, so be sure to get those 1,000-word stories sent in by the end of the month.

Don't forget that we have a flash fiction contest going right now! If you want to submit there's still plenty of time.

New flash fiction available today!

Check out "Dead of Night" by Michael John Petty.

"My eyes returned to the neon clock on the wall––the only source of light I could clearly discern––where I saw the glowing hands stuck at twelve and three. I looked for their younger brother, the thin, green hand that told me how many seconds were left before another minute of my life had wasted away. "

Not one announcement, but TWO for you!

Take a look at the cover art for the Spring 2024 issue and then check out the top-tier lineup of stories we have for you. Release date to be announced soon.

For his love and the Christ's kingdom, Thomas will travel through time and space to confront the beast at the end of the world. Dive into a fantastic adventure with “Patron” by Jesse Caldwell.

Much of modern life can seem like a nonstop assault on the senses; an endless stream of people and devices vie for our attention. But what if there’s more to it than “amusing ourselves to death”? Joel Davidson delves beneath the surface of those questions in “Distraction.”

Not many Silence and Starsong stories so far would likely be put in the fairytale category, but “The Sycamore Knight” by Liv Ross definitely fits the bill. Journey to a land of vivid beauty where both deep sorrow and deep joy are found in the bonds of a man's call to duty and sacrifice.

Armed with only his irons and his desire for justice, Hiram Jones faces an ancient evil under the hot Arizona sun. Jason McCuiston’s third Silence & Starsong story, “The Cross of Zaragoza” is a western with a healthy dose of the weird.

A strange and supposedly cursed amusement park on the Gulf is the setting for a showdown between two monsters. AK Meek has penned “Pier Six,” which is sure to satisfy fans of eerie horror.

Aaron D. Schneider is new to Silence & Starsong, but his story “Foundations of Stone” is right up our readers’ alley. Journey back in time as a Christian architect must fight corruption from without and within to rebuild the Church of the Holy Sepulchre.

In the aftermath of the Copper Wars, roving Packs traverse the Martian landscape in search of the precious metal. But on this job, Cutter finds more than he bargained for. Silence & Starsong is pleased to present the first installment of “The Copper-Wight” by Jim Waters. We’re confident you’ll want to grab a copy of the Fall 2024 issue to read the exciting conclusion.

A history student uncovers strange writings from a founding father that will change American history forever in “The Curious Letter of Alexander Hamilton.” Silence & Starsong gladly welcomes Cal Crucis to our growing list of contributing authors.

An Irish fisherman is forced into labor on a Viking longship. He discovers that his captors seek no ordinary plunder, but intend to sail beyond the edge of the known world. Enjoy “Hvitramannaland,” a tale of adventure by Chilton Sherborne.

Silence & Starsong is pleased to offer readers not only one, but two western stories in this issue. Michael John Petty has written “Standoff at the Gates of Hell.” Shane Cassidy agrees to help the people of Driftwood recover their stolen payroll, but to do so he must ride out alone into the Valley of the Shades.

When a woman's perception of the world undergoes an unexplained transformation will life ever be the same again? Returning author Frederick Gero Heimbach explores that question in “The Arrow,” a story we’re sure you’ll be thinking about long after you’ve finished.

There might be some political speech or something happening tonight. We suggest you skip that and spend some time reading the winning story for our first flash fiction contest of 2024! Check out "Success" by Ethan J. Nieminen.

"Marcus, still standing knee-deep in the river with his fishing net in his hand, had not yet gotten over the surprise of Theseus’s appearance, yet the choice of gifts so suddenly offered him was more surprising still. And so the fisherman did not look up the hill to inquire further into his benefactor’s identity; rather, he stared downward at the gifts."

New story today from Liv Ross!

"The cobbles are clean swept, and the paint looks fresh and new. In the failing light of evening, the lamps along the calle begin to glow. It all looks so welcoming, but every door is locked against me. The fear settles into a writhing little knot. Where am I if this is not my home?"

Give "Burano" a read today!

The lights are on behind every shining window, but none of them are my home. I don’t want to admit that I’m beginning to grow a little afraid. Is this even the right way?

It was three years since he’d heard from his brother when he got the call. Samuel was at the University hospital in Albuquerque, New Mexico with advanced leukemia. Yes, he’d asked for him specifically by name. Yes, he’d better come as soon as he could. And so Father Timothy made his preparatio...

🚨 Issue #2 PRE-ORDER now!🚨

Great news! The Kindle version of Silence & Starsong Fall 2023 is available for preorder right now. (see comments)

Paperback and hardback (🤩) are under review and are scheduled for release on Tuesday, November 28. Since Amazon doesn’t currently allow preorder of hard copies through their self-publishing service, keep an eye out for those and we’ll be sure to make an update here.

The less than great news is that we didn’t quite make Amazon’s deadline to hit the 11/27 release date as originally planned (our editor was working on the assumption that he had until midnight local time rather than GMT 🤦🏻‍♂️).

🚨 ANNOUNCEMENT 🚨

Remember we said we'd have more news for you later this week? Well, it's later now.

We will be open for submission again in January! However, there will be two really big changes.

1. We will only be open for submissions for the first week of January (Jan. 1 - Jan. 8 ). This is a change from our first two issues where we left it open for a month. Doing it this way will let devote enough time to making sure we put out the best product we can, including giving a little more help to developing authors when necessary.

2. We will be offering two cents per word for accepted stories. Up to this point we've been running "on spec" (you might say) and on the faith of some ambitious authors who saw something in us that made them think we were the right outlet for their stories despite the fact that all we could offer was a free copy of the magazine and some small measure of social media exposure. But we want to do more than that for authors whose stories we print and we think the next issue will be the right time to start.

Keep an eye on the submissions guidelines page of our website for additional details.

15/11/2023

🚨 ANNOUNCEMENT 🚨

It’s taken a little longer than some of you (and all of us) would have liked, but we’re now ready to let you know that Issue #2 will be released on Monday, November 27!

Keep an eye out for a link where you’ll be able to pre-order the Kindle version; the print edition will be available to order on “Cyber Monday.”

If you’ve read this far you also get a little “pre-announcement” that we’ll be saying more about later this week. It has to do with our next submissions period and you won’t want to miss the exciting news!

10/11/2023

You’ve seen the cover art, but what exactly is inside? Here’s a short preview of what you can expect from the stories in our fall issue.

Our Editor stumbled upon an interesting website the other day. The article that grabbed his attention was titled "Has Science Fiction Left Me Behind?" by James Wallace Harris (here: https://classicsofsciencefiction [dot] com/2023/10/22/has-science-fiction-left-me-behind/).

Looking around that site, however, led him to the Classics of Science Fiction database that "identifies the books and short stories that are most remembered based on how often they are cited by awards, best-of-lists, polls, editors, scholars, and other sources of recognition."

Every so often it seems like certain folks on social media get into a discussion around the admonition not to read anything published after 1980. So, taking that as the dividing line, Joseph drew up a list (in the picture with this post) of the top ten books in the database (based on number of citations) and put them side by side. Granted, no one is likely to agree that all of the books on either list should be there, but seeing them next to each other is interesting.

Feel free to grab a copy of the picture in this post, put a check next to the books you've read, and share the result with us here.
