2019:

By: Uduak Nseabasi

It was a carnival of sorts over the weekend when youths of Obot Akara Local Government Area thronged the country home of Sir Monday Ebong Uko, the Honourable Commissioner for Youth/Sports in their thousands to reaffirm their resolve to re-elect His Excellency, Governor Udom Gabriel Emmanuel for a second term in office.

Speaking through their leaders/accredited spokesmen from the 10 Political Wards of the Local Government along with their female counterparts, the youths who literally ambushed the Honourable Commissioner pledged to ensure Governor Udom Emmanuel returns for a second term. They further asserted that they are all armed with their Permanent Voters Card's and are still mobilizing their peers to enrol in the voters net before the August 31st deadline so that they will massively vote for Governor Udom Emmanuel.

An elated, yet humble Sir Uko appreciated the youths for the visit, displayed unrivaled hospitality and conveyed the goodwill and immense love of His Excellency to the people of Obot Akara for their unconditional support and loyalty to his administration. He urged the youths not to rest on their oar's until all the people of voting age in the area have accessed their Voters Cards. He promised to packaged a Special Empowerment Programme in the days to come, and admonished the youths not to be distracted in their support for Governor Udom Emmanuel.

The event featured interactive session with the Honourable Commissioner, cultural displays, sumptuous merriments, field situation reports, grand standing and reception of erstwhile Members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) who were defecting to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Roll call of guests had the Member, Ikot Ekpene/Obot Akara State Constituency, Rt. Hon. (Prince) Idongesit Ntekpere, the Executive Chairman of Obot Akara, Etubom(Hon) Anietie Udom UDP Akpaettor, the Council Vice Chairman, Members of the Legislative Council, Supervisors, leaders of the Youth Council, Youth Caucus, Dakkada Youths, Village Youths, Female Youths and a host of others who all declared that Udom Emmanuel is their only choice for 2019.

Pause: Congratulations to Ethiopian Airlines

__Africa's most successful airline adds airplane #100!

Last month I spent two days in Addis Ababa at the invitation of the new Prime Minister, His Excellency Dr. Abiy Ahmed. As I have said many times before, Ethiopia is a quiet champion of Africa’s economic transformation. It has managed to grow at the rate of over 10% over 10 years (and 7% over two decades!)

With a population of 102 million which is increasing at the rate of 2.2m per year, it is the second largest country in Africa by population size.

Under Ethiopia's new leadership, change is happening at a breathtaking pace! The excitement was palpable. The young entrepreneurs I met are very hopeful.

I had the opportunity to participate in a proud ! Ethiopian Airlines had just added the 100th airplane to its fleet, the largest in Africa!

This is an amazingly successful business in one of the toughest industries in the world. One of Africa’s oldest airline at 72 years old, Ethiopian Airlines has survived times of extraordinary upheaval in the country’s and even Africa’s history.

This airline has seen everything: war, famine, bad governments, fuel price shocks and so on... But still it has thrived!

It has survived despite the worst of conditions...

# Remember: A good soldier learns to fight in the conditions and not the conditions.

I met Ethiopian Airlines' Chairman Abadulla Gemeda, Vice Chairman Dr. Arkebe Oqubay, and award-winning CEO Tewolde GebreMariam who began work there more than 30 years ago in the cargo traffic handling department, rising up the ladder and gaining experience in all parts of the business. I discussed with them why it has been successful.

Guess what... the three “Ps”!

# Product: For them, moving people in the air is not just their product. It is the unique mission in which they are constantly innovating. Even whilst I was there, they were starting a direct route to Chicago the next day, and also a new destination, Geneva that same week! This week they became the first African airlines to fly direct to Indonesia and there was more...

# People: Amazingly dedicated and highly skilled professional staff at all levels. The CEO and his team are humble and entrepreneurial. These guys could work anywhere in the world. They have a reputation for being corruption-free. This is probably why they have succeeded where many other state-owned enterprises failed.

# Process: They understand every aspect of modern business practice. This is a very serious business, let me tell you.

Being a good entrepreneur does not mean you have to own a business. Some of the most successful businesses in the world are run by entrepreneurs who don’t own the business!

Confused? It’s a !

Well done, Ethiopian!

, -BASED (alias BILLIONAIRE AK47)

Meet Akanimo Udofia, A Toronto-Based Nigerian Billionaire
Akanimo Udofia may be based in Toronto, Canada, but that hasn’t stopped his Desicon Group, an engineering, procurement and construction services company, from becoming one of the major servicers of Nigeria’s oil and gas industry.

However, the growth of Udofia‘s business empire is just starting, as the Ventures Africa rich list reveals that the best times are still to come for the company.

Akanimo Asuquo Udofia (born 18 June 1969), also known as “Akan Udofia” is an business magnate and philanthropist based in Toronto, Canada. His chain of businesses spans various sectors of Nigerian economy, with interests in engineering, construction, oil and gas, and maritime.

Akanimo Udofia hails from Akwa-Ibom State Nigeria. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from then Cross River State University, now University of Uyo, in Uyo, capital of Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria. He is also an alumnus of Harvard Business School. “He is an “international entrepreneur” as profiled by Inside Toronto. He is the Group Managing Director of DESICON Group. He has over 20 years post graduate experience in Business Administration and Development.

Akanimo Udofia is currently the Group Managing Director of Desicon Group, “which provides detailed engineering design and installation services for leading organisations in the Nigerian Oil & Gas Sector. As a Senior Business Manager at Vision 2000 Ltd between 1990 and 1994 was in charge of the Business Development and Strategic Planning for the World Bank financed project Population Activities Fund Agency –PAFA. Between 1998-2002, Akanimo Udofia set up consortium partner with STOLT-BOUYGUES Offshore on the Amenam Project, coordinating oil and gas services contracts in Sub-Saharan Africa with total portfolio of projects valued at over USD900 million.

Functioning as the Managing Director of Desicon, he positioned the company as one of Nigeria’s indigenous companies patronised by international oil companies in the petroleum sector in Nigeria. This much was attested to by Mark Ward, Managing Director of ExxonMobil Nigeria in his statement: “One of the most prominent examples (that is, involvement with indigenous companies) is Saipem, the oldest international services company in Nigeria, who has worked closely with the local electrical and instrumentation company, Desicon, for the past 10 years.” Akanimo Udofia lent credence to this position by saying “Saipem does nothing in Nigeria without partnering with us… Saipem is so convinced that the future of Nigerian companies lies in the Nigerian capacity.” Udofia is the Chairman of Vision 2000 Ltd and a Director of SAIPEM Contracting Nigeria Ltd, a company “with a huge structure covering all sort of services to the Oil & Gas Industry such as Drilling On/Offshore, construction activities on/offshore (pipelines, power plants, fabrication activities) Engineering, Maintenance.”He was later elevated to the Board of Saipem Contracting Nigeria Limited.

Akanimo Udofia is a philanthropist. The businessman’s philanthropic gesture received rave reviews in Canada when in 2012 he donated One Hundred and Fifty Thousand Dollars ($150,000) to a Toronto community in November 2012. Moved by the Danzig Street mass shooting in Scaborough, in which “the inevitable images of young black men and women, being carted away on stretchers”, he gave the Danzig townhouse community the sum of $150,000 over a period of three years, in his quest to “support a variety of resident-developed initiatives within the Danzig community.” In a release made by him, Udofia said “I choose to be a role model, to show these kids that there’s a big world out there. Canada presents them, if they choose to and are motivated, the opportunity to acquire skills that are much sought-after around the world,” also adding that “the emerging economies of Africa can use a skilled, talented and reformed youth from the Danzig community in Toronto and I can help.” This gesture, according to Councillor Michael Thompson (Ward 37, Scarborough Centre) Chair of Toronto’s Economic Development Committee, “Mr. Udofia’s gift will help the residents of the Danzig community to recover from adversity and to find new social and economic opportunities. We are grateful for Mr. Udofia’s generosity and leadership, and for raising the community’s spirits during a challenging time
” In his own reaction, Gene Jones, President and CEO, Toronto Community Housing said: “I would like to thank Mr. Udofia for his generous donation. This support will fund programs to help the young people in Danzig access educational opportunities and pursue their dreams. By working with community partners in Morningside Coronation and right across the city, we can work together to create healthy, vibrant communities.” He is an avid believer in the development of his community and has initiated and executed numerous community development projects including:

• Offer of free medical and surgical services to the people of Affa Offiong, Akwa-Ibom State. He sponsored eight medical doctors, 20 nurses from United States of America and trained 30 auxiliary nurses, who treated 400 patients in the state as well as provided water project to the community to mark his 40th birthday celebrations.

• 480,000 litre water development project in Affa Offiong, Akwa-Ibom State, which was inaugurated by the State Governor, Chief (Dr.) Godswill Akpabio,.

Akanimo Udofia is married with three daughters. He enjoys boating and water sports in his leisure time

A regime of cramming and testing is crushing young people’s instinct to learn and destroying their future

In the future, if you want a job, you must be as unlike a machine as possible: creative, critical and socially skilled. So why are children being taught to behave like machines?

Children learn best when teaching aligns with their natural exuberance, energy and curiosity. So why are they dragooned into rows and made to sit still while they are stuffed with facts?

We succeed in adulthood through collaboration. So why is collaboration in tests and exams called cheating?

Governments claim to want to reduce the number of children being excluded from school. So why are their curriculums and tests so narrow that they alienate any child whose mind does not work in a particular way?

The best teachers use their character, creativity and inspiration to trigger children’s instinct to learn. So why are character, creativity and inspiration suppressed by a stifling regime of micromanagement?

There is, as Graham Brown-Martin explains in his book Learning {Re}imagined, a common reason for these perversities. Our schools were designed to produce the workforce required by 19th-century factories. The desired product was workers who would sit silently at their benches all day, behaving identically, to produce identical products, submitting to punishment if they failed to achieve the requisite standards. Collaboration and critical thinking were just what the factory owners wished to discourage.

As far as relevance and utility are concerned, we might as well train children to operate a spinning jenny. Our schools teach skills that are not only redundant but counter-productive. Our children suffer this life-defying, dehumanising system for nothing.

At present we are stuck with the social engineering of an industrial workforce in a post-industrial era
The less relevant the system becomes, the harder the rules must be enforced, and the greater the stress they inflict. One school’s current advertisement in the Times Educational Supplement asks: “Do you like order and discipline? Do you believe in children being obedient every time? … If you do, then the role of detention director could be for you.” Yes, many schools have discipline problems. But is it surprising when children, bursting with energy and excitement, are confined to the spot like battery chickens?

Teachers are now leaving the profession in droves, their training wasted and their careers destroyed by overwork and a spirit-crushing regime of standardisation, testing and top-down control. The less autonomy they are granted, the more they are blamed for the failures of the system. A major recruitment crisis beckons, especially in crucial subjects such as physics and design and technology. This is what governments call efficiency.

Any attempt to change the system, to equip children for the likely demands of the 21st century, rather than those of the 19th, is demonised by governments and newspapers as “social engineering”. Well, of course it is. All teaching is social engineering. At present we are stuck with the social engineering of an industrial workforce in a post-industrial era. Under Donald Trump’s education secretary, Betsy DeVos, and a nostalgic government in Britain, it’s likely only to become worse.

When they are allowed to apply their natural creativity and curiosity, children love learning. They learn to walk, to talk, to eat and to play spontaneously, by watching and experimenting. Then they get to school, and we suppress this instinct by sitting them down, force-feeding them with inert facts and testing the life out of them.

There is no single system for teaching children well, but the best ones have this in common: they open up rich worlds that children can explore in their own ways, developing their interests with help rather than indoctrination. For example, the Essa academy in Bolton gives every pupil an iPad, on which they create projects, share material with their teachers and each other, and can contact their teachers with questions about their homework. By reducing their routine tasks, this system enables teachers to give the children individual help.

Other schools have gone in the opposite direction, taking children outdoors and using the natural world to engage their interests and develop their mental and physical capacities (the Forest School movement promotes this method). But it’s not a matter of high-tech or low-tech; the point is that the world a child enters is rich and diverse enough to ignite their curiosity, and allow them to discover a way of learning that best reflects their character and skills.

There are plenty of teaching programmes designed to work with children, not against them. For example, the Mantle of the Expert encourages them to form teams of inquiry, solving an imaginary task – such as running a container port, excavating a tomb or rescuing people from a disaster – that cuts across traditional subject boundaries. A similar approach, called Quest to Learn, is based on the way children teach themselves to play games. To solve the complex tasks they’re given, they need to acquire plenty of information and skills. They do it with the excitement and tenacity of gamers.

No grammar schools, lots of play: the secrets of Europe’s top education system

The Reggio Emilia approach, developed in Italy, allows children to develop their own curriculum, based on what interests them most, opening up the subjects they encounter along the way with the help of their teachers. Ashoka Changemaker schools treat empathy as “a foundational skill on a par with reading and math”, and use it to develop the kind of open, fluid collaboration that, they believe, will be the 21st century’s key skill.

The first multi-racial school in South Africa, Woodmead, developed a fully democratic method of teaching, whose rules and discipline were overseen by a student council. Its integrated studies programme, like the new system in Finland, junked traditional subjects in favour of the students’ explorations of themes, such as gold, or relationships, or the ocean. Among its alumni are some of South Africa’s foremost thinkers, politicians and businesspeople.

In countries such as Britain and the United States, such programmes succeed despite the system, not because of it. Had these governments set out to ensure that children find learning difficult and painful, they could not have done a better job. Yes, let’s have some social engineering. Let’s engineer our children out of the factory and into the real world.
