A powerful 6.8-magnitude earthquake struck Morocco Friday night, killing more than 600 people and damaging buildings in the historic city of Marrakech in what the United States Geological Survey (USGS) said was the strongest tremor to hit that part of the North African nation in more than a century.

BREAKING NEWS:

In a tragic turn of events, the interior ministry of Morocco has reported that over 600 individuals have lost their lives in the wake of a formidable earthquake that struck the country's central region.

In a seismic event that registered a magnitude of 6.8 on the Richter scale, residents of Marrakesh and various other cities were compelled to evacuate their homes and seek refuge on the streets swiftly.

In the remote mountainous regions, reports have emerged of numerous casualties, with a significant number of fatalities and a minimum of 153 individuals sustaining injuries.

In a momentous event that unfolded shortly after 23:00 local time, a seismic occurrence of considerable magnitude took place in the vicinity of Marrakesh, Morocco.

The United States Geological Survey reports that this event transpired at a relatively shallow depth of 71km (44 miles), sending ripples of seismic energy throughout the region.
