Introducing our "It's Hard to Repair the World" guest, Dr. Evan Johnson! Evan earned his masters degree from the University of Georgia and his Ph.D. in early modern German history from the University of Cincinnati. He specializes in war and society, in particular civilian coping strategies during the Thirty Years War. He currently teaches World Civilizations at the University of Dayton. Besides being a scholar and lover of Bierworst (we assume), Evan is also a husband, a father, a teller of jokes, and wearer of snazzy jackets. You can read his chapter "Seeking Peace, Finding War: Supplication and Negotiation in Electoral Brandenburg during the Thirty Years War" in War and Peace in the Early Modern German Lands (2019). Introducing our most recent guest, Dean Flemming. Dean holds a Ph.D. from the University of Aberdeen in Scotland, and is professor emeritus of New Testament and missions at MidAmerica Nazarene University in Kansas. He spent over two decades as a missionary and educator in the Philippines and Germany. His books include Foretaste of the Future, Recovering the Full Mission of God, Contextualization in the New Testament, and the New Beacon Bible Commentary on Philippians. He is also a loving brother and uncle, an avid hiker and photographer, and has a laugh that could shake the rafters of Notre Dame Cathedral. You can find his books on the Intervarsity Press website here:

For many Christians, the book of Revelation is a confusing, coded screenplay for the end times. But when we read Revelation as focused on the future, we miss what it says about what God is doing in the world now. Dean Flemming mines this untapped resource by introducing a missional reading that draw...

Introducing this week's guest and modern quilt maven, Cara Biser Van Doren! Cara is a graduate of the University of Cincinnati, a sports trainer, mother of FOUR (you read that correctly!), and brand-new quilter who learned her craft to help the refugee crisis in Ukraine. Normally an "outdoor girl," Cara has spent the last year learning the ins and outs of binding, backstitching, cake layers, interfacing, piecing, and sashing. Grab a Gaterade, go for a run, and listen in as Cara shows us how, in the words of Mother Teresa, "we can all do small things with great love."

At the request of a fan, we are reposting the statement drafted by recent guest Kevin McPartland related to the January 6, 2021 insurrection: "Kevin McPartland Jan. 6, 2021
This was a coup attempt. Plain and simple. These people rejected the results of a free and fair election, an election that has come under the most intense scrutiny of any in American history, one that has been proven over and over again to have been free and fair. Instead of accepting that the will of the people was against them, they stormed the Capitol. This has never happened before. In 1861, the South did not contest Lincoln's election. In 1877, no one stormed the Capitol. In 1969, protesters did not attack Nixon's inauguration. In 2017, the marches on DC did not threaten democracy, force congress to adjourn, nor demand a new election.
What we are watching today is the product of 4 years of right wing rage, lies, and a sense of entitlement that goes far beyond the bounds of economic privilege. It is an entitlement to define what is and is not American, who does and does not fit the bill, and to denigrate, attack, and expunge the ideas and people who do not align with those fictitious "values." The election gave proof to that lie, that America is not what they imagine, that it is composed of people of different colors and values, and that it can speak against them. We are seeing the backlash today. This is not democracy, this is not protest. This is an attempted seizure of power, a rejection of the will of the people. Nothing less.
The Confederacy believed they were defending the legacy of the founders, too. That didn't mean they weren't traitors."
