"Visar Zhiti Day" was proclaimed by Illinois Governor JB Pritzker. The new holiday commemorates January 28, 1987, when the Albanian poet's nine-year imprisonment under Communist dictatorship ended.

An event honored Zhiti for his personal liberation and his victory for freedom of expression. His life story and literary works reflect the triumph of the human spirit over tyranny. He gives a voice to the silenced.

Actor Jim Belushi read the poem "Squirrels in Washington" from our newly reprinted book "The Condemned Apple: Selected Poetry" by Visar Zhiti.

Visar Zhiti is Albania’s greatest living poet. He was imprisoned from 1979 to 1987, one of many scapegoats selected as a means of terrifying intellectuals under Enver Hoxha’s Communist dictatorship. Allowed neither pencil nor paper, he continued to write his poems in his head. His fellow prisoners helped him memorize the poems, in part to keep their sanity and to brighten up the terrible lives they were forced to bear. Only when Hoxha fell from power, and the political prisoners were freed, was Zhiti’s poetry brought to print.

Djuna Barnes's great verse drama, written, in part, about her own family, was first published in 1958. There have been few notable productions since it premiered in Stockholm in 1961, but the play remains one of Barnes's highest poetic achievements, fitting comfortably alongside her prose masterwork "Nightwood."

Inspired by the notion of the dialectic in the work of philosophers such as Hegel and Bachelard, Nick Piombino created his idea of paired aphorisms he calls "contradicta," recasting the classic form of the great aphorists such as La Rochefoucauld, Blake, and Emerson in a contemporary context.

Published in 1843, "A Christmas Carol" is one of Charles Dickens's most popular works. Who can forget Ebenezer Scrooge, his dastardly treatment of his employee and family, and his "ba-humbug" attitude towards Christmas—all changed by a nightmarish sleep of visions past, present, and future?
