The Factory of London

On our first visits to London with friends, many moons ago, we named everything we saw as ‘The [POSSIBLY INACCURATE DESCRIPTION OF WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE] of London!’.



Hence, the iconic Battersea Power Station became ‘The Factory of London’. 🤷



A handful of years later, we got the chance to explore this magnificent beast, as it began a rebirth into it’s present incarnation.

‘Phagocyte (Self-Portrait)’ 2020

From 2017 to 2021, I went through a prolonged clash with Crohn’s Disease/Colitis. This painting spilled out from the feelings I wanted to express of the battles inside my body and brain…

…All tied up with the concept of the gut-brain axis; how we treat our microbiome affects how we feel, how we think, how we behave.

It kinda felt at times like my body was eating itself; fighting so hard against intruders – imaginary or otherwise – that it was damaging itself and taking me down with it.

While finding my way back, I learned how to care for and nurture my microbiome AND how to finish a painting, so… winning?

Tarbat Ness Lighthouse (lighthoose), looking out for the best interests of sailors off the wild East Coast of Scotland, since 1830. You are a beacon of positivity, sir. Thanks.

Apparently, Robert Stevenson - the engineer who designed this majestic, stripey beam-pole - was the grandfather of Robert Louis Stevenson, so visits to this very lighthoose may have inspired such classics as ’Treasure Island’. 😲
