It was a pleasure to drop off ten extra copies of our June issue of Stroll to Nancy Groff yesterday! Nancy is the great granddaughter of Peter T. Watt, the original owner of Roslyn, the magnificent home featured on our June cover! Nancy has many fond memories of spending time at Roslyn over the years when it was in the family and is looking forward to sending copies of the magazine to many of her relatives. Mr. Watt was one of the founders of Lancaster’s famous Watt & Shand department store, which defined the corner of King and Queen streets at Penn Square in downtown Lancaster for many decades. Nancy recently wrote a book about the store with a chapter dedicated to Roslyn!

This month we celebrate Roslyn Mansion, the culmination of our series on Presidential Neighbors, historic homes in close proximity to Buchanan’s Wheatland.
“When Peter T. Watt built his incredible, 9,320 sq. ft. home in 1896 on the prominent northeast corner of the intersection of Marietta and North President Avenues, he most definitely was using the new edifice to promote the Watt and Shand Department Store. Similarly, the architect of Roslyn, C. Emlen Urban, used this magnificent structure as a beacon to attract new clients to his own design professional career. “Roslyn” was presented by Mr. Watt to his wife, Laura, on her birthday and members of the Watt family remained in ownership of the home for over 70 years.”
Read more and see the beautiful images of Roslyn by in our June issue! And a big thank you to Benton Webber for all of his research as he wrote these articles over the last two years and for being an excellent tour guide of these historic and architecturally impressive homes in the community!

We’re thrilled to introduce Adam Seelig and Karen Foerstel on our February cover! Readers of Stroll will recognize Karen as one of our primary writers for many years and the current Editor!

When they moved to their home on Wheatland Avenue a few years ago, “we started receiving Stroll magazine,” Karen said. “I immediately reached out to the magazine to see if they needed any writers. I thought it would be such a great way to get to know the neighborhood, and I was right!”

Both Adam and Karen lived in a variety of places before moving to Lancaster. For Karen, that included San Diego, DC and London, England and for Adam, it included Colorado, San Diego and Philadelphia.

You can learn much more about Adam and Karen in the February issue arriving in your mailboxes now!

We had a wonderful Neighbors Night Out last evening despite the weather! Residents had a chance to take a close look at the telescopes at the Joseph R. Grundy Observatory and also relax in the cozy home of SLH neighbors who live directly behind it! Thanks to Ed Cook for showing us the Observatory and we hope to return soon on a clear sky night! Thanks, too, to our hosts who provided a wonderful space to gather and meet our neighbors. They even provided a wonderful lit path to the Observatory on a dark and snowy night!

In our November issue, we highlight the return of Illumination at Prima Theatre, their most well-attended holiday production ever! “Magnificent singers perform awe-inspiring renditions of holiday songs,” is the description on the Prima website. “The elegant baby grand piano at the center of the room sets the tone for a truly magical evening.”

“The 2023 show [Illumination] continues to feature four amazing singers from across the country, and awe-inspiring instrumental music, featuring a cellist, guitarist, percussionist, and pianist at the grand piano.” According to Joshua William Green, who performed in the concert last year and is directing it this year, the one-and-a-half-hour show is full of surprises and inspired by local and loyal fans.
“I think a lot of people want to have an experience, not just a show, and that inspires us,” he said.
When speaking of Prima specifically, he glowed. “Prima is perfect for everyone from season ticket holders to first-timers alike — providing exciting original shows and experiential concerts.” Joshua believes the greatest performances should invigorate people's lives, just like Prima does.
For more information about Prima’s entire season of productions or to rent the theatre for your next event, call 717-327-5124 or visit primatheatre.org.

Domani Wealth, one of our amazing longtime partners, has joined Savant Wealth. In our October issue, we meet Angie Stephenson, who shares a little more about this change.
“We’re still very much a local firm,” says Angie, “but now we have some additional resources in our toolbox that we didn’t have before. Unlike many wealth management firms that focus primarily on investments, Savant offers a “one-stop shop” for clients that includes much more than investment management. We take a holistic, team approach that also includes financial planning, retirement planning, tax and consulting, and estate planning.”

Meet the Fortunato Geary family! Chrissy and Vince moved to their School Lane Hills home more than 10 years ago from New Jersey.
“We didn’t know anything about the area,” Chrissy said. “I grew up thinking Lancaster was a tourist destination on Route 30. It was a real shock to see such a vibrant downtown in Lancaster City with so many shops and restaurants.”
Said Vince: “We went to Central Market on a Saturday and that opened our eyes. That was the turning point for me.”
Today, the family makes the most of everything the area has to offer while also giving back to the community.
Vince, who played lacrosse in high school and college, coaches with Conestoga Valley Youth Lacrosse. Chrissy is a coach with Lancaster Girls on the Run which combines physical activity with life skills development to inspire and empower girls.

Some things are just so unique and fascinating, they are difficult to categorize. So, in 2009 – almost 100 years after this one-of-a-kind home was built on Wheatland Avenue – the owners dubbed its style “Tudorbethan” as a nod to its Tudor styling and Elizabethan features.

Francis Suter, the first owner of the eponymous home, was one of the original executives of the Armstrong Cork Company.

In 1927, Suter added a “courting room” to the rear of the home, designed by New York City architect Frederick Houston and meant to serve as a place where his daughter, Elizabeth, could safely meet with visiting suitors. Apparently, a miniature ballroom was also built in the home for Elizabeth.

We're thrilled to highlight SLH resident, Lisa Doseff, in our August issue and her children's book that celebrates the benefits and pleasures of landscaping with native plants! Her book, Grandma Lisa's Humming, Buzzing Chirping Garden, is a wonderful way to introduce the ways we can welcome and support wildlife in our yards to children (and adults!). Also, the book is an accurate representation of Lisa's real life property and how she's cultivated an environment that is not only attractive to birds, butterflies and other animals, but is also a wonderful place of exploration, discovery and fun for her grandchildren!

Before moving to School Lane Hills in 2020, Michael Hackett, Nancy Steedle, and their two daughters, Safiya, 14, and Grace, age 8, lived – well -- just about everywhere!

Michael’s career as a Foreign Service Officer with the State Department and Nancy’s work in international development led the family to move around the globe for 12 years to Bosnia, Russia, Congo, Canada, and Ukraine.

And with each move, the family brought a bit of the local culture with them.

And while the family has lived around the world, Michael and Nancy say there is something special about School Lane Hills.

“What a fantastic, welcoming group of people,” Michael said. “Even when we moved in during the height of COVID, everyone reached out with food and a warm welcome. We absolutely love our neighbors who have quickly become some of our closest friends. We’ve never had such wonderful neighbors as we do now.”

With our July cover, we meet Ted and Susan Wallover! The couple have been married for nearly 50 years. They have also been business partners for more than two decades with Wallover Architects Incorporated and Wallover Aquatics International, helping communities, businesses, schools, and others to design, build, and manage swimming pools and aquatic facilities.
“We are together twenty-four seven," Susan said. "Our kids think we are nuts!"
When asked if they ever feel the need to take a break from each other, the couple replied in unison: "No!"
“She is my best friend," Ted said. "We've been that way since college," said Susan.

We were happy to feature Meals On Wheels of Lancaster in our May issue! Meals on Wheels works to alleviate the challenges associated with aging in place, disabilities, food insecurity, and social isolation in our community. They deliver freshly prepared meals at a reasonable cost to nearly 2,000 residents across the county! In 2021, the group moved into the School Lane Hills area at the corner of Jackson Drive and Columbia Avenue, making it easy for neighbors to volunteer. School Lane Hills resident Bill Cook serves as the group’s Board President (pictured on 2nd photo with Executive Director Feleen Nancarvis).
To volunteer, please consider joining one of their weekly drop-in orientations on Wednesday afternoons from 1 PM to 3 PM. For details on available volunteer opportunities, please visit www.mealsonwheelsoflancaster.org/volunteer or email: [email protected]
