Djunga de Biluca 🕊
13/02/1929 - 17/04/2023

A Cape Verdean ánd Rotterdam legend has passed.
"Een man die vele petten droeg" as we would say in Dutch. Born João Silva, but better known as Djunga de Biluca, or simply Djunga, he played a pivotal role for the Cape Verdean community, within Rotterdam and the diaspora.

On request of Amilcar Cabral, the leader of the Cape Verdean independence movement, Djunga founded Morabeza Records in 1965. Music became the weapon through which they could express their culture, their Cape Verdean nationality, and their resistance against Portuguese colonialism. In turn, Morabeza Records became first Cape Verdean record label and launched the careers of artists such as Bonga and Bana, and saw rhe release of the first record by Cesária Évora.

As one of the first Cape Verdeans to settle in Rotterdam, Djunga welcomed many fellow countrymen in the city. He became consul in 1976, was praised by many for his deeds, but stayed ever humble. For he never forgot where he came from.

Djunga de Biluca was the man that became the focus of my master thesis back in 2020. However, I never got to meet him in person during my research due to the epidemic. After a long time, a physical meeting would finally come. Plans were stalled however, as I learned of Djunga's deteriorating health. He passed away on April 17th 2023, after a brief hospitalization.

We mourn his death, but celebrate his life. Rest in peace Djunga de Biluca. 🙏

It's been some time since I recorded a mix so I'm happy to share this one hour journey I recorded for the Amsterdam based 🔊

Though recorded mid winter, I feel like it nicely encapsulates the current days, transitioning from the cold and deep, slowly emerging to the surface with a hint of spring. For this mix, I delved more into the house spectrum, going through classic Chicago house to modern Detroit productions by giants such as Theo Parrish and Specter, and ending on a more soulful note. Music by among many others.

A rare live performance in 1976 by the second formation of the Cape Verdean band Voz de Cabo Verde (aka Voz de Cano Verde 2, initiated by singer and entrepreneur Bana in Portugal).

The band here consists of Leonel Almeida (lead vocals), Joãozinho (guitar, left), Armando Tito (guitar, middle), Bebeth (bass, right), Kabanga (drums) and a very young Paulino Vieira (keyboards & backing vocals).

Even though the 19 year old Paulino here was already a musical prodigy, he's still far from the cool charismatic bandleader he would become over the course of the 1980's (check out my previous post on Voz de Cabo Verde to see a whole different Paulino 😉). In this clip he's stuffed away behind his keyboards in corner, backing Leonel on vocals. The six year older Leonel is taking the lead and seems way more at ease. It also seems like Armando Tito (centre guitarist) is still guiding the younger Paulino, looking back from time to time whilst leading the rehearsed dance moves with Joãozinho and Bebeth. Armando was 12 years older than Paulino.

Unfortunately, I don't know what song is performed here. I believe the performance was recorded at Club Monte Cara in Lisbon. Monte Cara was another initiation of Bana, who built his own musical entreprise in Lisbon in the mid-1970's with a new formation of Voz de Cabo Verde, a record label and Monte Cara, a restaurant, café and club where his artists could perform.

This performance was recorded as part of a Portuguese documentary and broadcasted on March 9th 1976, less than a year since Cape Verde had gained its independence from Portuguese colonialism. The documentary celebrates Cape Verdean poetry and music, highlighting its importance in Cape Verdean culture 🇨🇻

To my knowledge, this is the only footage of the band in this formation.

~NAME CHANGE~

I'm saying goodbye to 'Goodthingman' and will adopt the name 'Wes' from now on for my future DJ endeavours.

I chose the name Goodthingman about five years ago, taken from the song of the same name by artist Sumy. However, over the past few months I started feeling less and less connected to the name and the thought to change the name didn't leave my head.

To add, I recently found out that the song was written as a response to the prostitution scene in Amsterdam in the early 80's, telling the story of a man (the Goodthingman) whose actions and intentions could be interpreted in different ways, good or bad. It showed me that there was much more behind the name than I initially assumed five years ago.

As I started pondering, it felt only right to change my DJ name to something more personal, so please welcome 'Wes'.

For those who liked the name Goodthingman, don't worry, you'll get some time to process the change, As Goodthingman might still appear here and there on some of my already set gigs.

✌ Wes

Marcio Ramos & Ana Maria - Violões e Guitarras (1991) 🇧🇷

One of the finds from my latest trip to Brazil: a lovely arranged folk tune by the Brazilian duo Marcio Ramos and Ana Maria, taken from their only release 'Motivo Cigano'. Overall the record is more acoustically oriented so this tune really stands out with its full band line-up. The track features a special contribution on trombone by Zeca do Trombone and contains an amazing bass arrangement, which is sometimes slapping but also beautifully melodic (check the bass solo towards the end of the tune). Released in 1991 on Leblon Records in Rio de Janeiro.

Full tune can be found on my Mistureba YT channel 🍵

Enjoy your sunday ☀️

Found this amazing footage from the Cape Verdean powerhouse Voz de Cabo Verde, lead here by Paulino Vieira, the man with the nifty sunglasses. They perform Paulino’s ‘Prêce di um Fidjo’, a song about a son of Cape Verde, long away from home but envisioning his certain return to the Cape Verdean islands. The performance was part of the Portuguese TV program Arroz Doce, aired on July 29th, 1985.

For me, the band can be seen on the height of their musical capabilities here. Paulino (aged 28) and Leonel (aged 33) had already been playing together in the band for 10 years. Their decade-long experience is reflected in the way the two men effortless take turns on the lead vocals, complementing eachother, singing in harmony. The other members of the band are Paulino’s younger brother Toy Vieira (piano & backing vocals), the brothers Tito Paris (bass) and Toi Paris (drums), and Zé António (rhythm guitar). With this formation, the band had already recorded numerous killer records backing singers such as Bana, Dionisio Maio, Frank de Pina, Silvino Vieira, Quirino Do Canto, and Vera Cruz Pinto. While the band functions as a well-oiled machine, it’s Paulino who steals the show here, rocking his characteristic glasses, perfectly in control over how to work the mic, and then working his way through this incredible guitar solo, scatting along in a way reminiscent of George Benson’s ‘The World is a Ghetto’.

Apart from the quality of the performance itself, I love some of the little things happening in the video; you hear Paulino riling up the band in the background when Leonel takes his turn on the lead vocals (2:47); Toy Vieira forgets to join in on the chorus (2:25); and then there’s Toi Paris rocking that Elvis shirt behind the drums 🕺

To my knowledge, this is the only footage of Voz de Cabo Verde in action with this lineup, which, to me, is quite suprising when one considers the impact the band had on the Cape Verdean music scene over the course of the 1970s and 1980s.

So, please enjoy Voz de Cabo Verde! 🇨🇻

the 20th instalment (already!) of my (bi-)monthly radio show Mistureba for Stranded FM can now be found in the cloud ☁️

feeling very thankful to Stranded FM for allowing me to share music with you on a regular basis. it has been more than 2 years since I started the concept of the Mistureba show and in those years I've been playing around with the format a lot. anyway, I guess it doesn't really matter since the show's name means "hodgepodge" or "confused mixture" in Portuguese so anything goes 😉

for yesterday's show I mixed up a nice porridge of sounds from Trinidad & Tobago, Cabo Verde, UK, Brazil, Haiti, Ivory Coast, Angola and Jamaica with a slight focus on tunes with a socio-conscious message. listen, do your thing & enjoy today ☀️
