It has been an interesting and difficult task to judge the first stage of the Sentinel Poetry Book Competition 2021. Writers were asked to submit 20 pages of original poems and it must have been quite a task to write/find/order new material. Some appear to have been written with a theme in mind, other selections were more random but equally rich in potential. A great many included individual poems which were outstanding and will probably soon be seen as winners or in publications elsewhere.

The process of selection has been hard since it involves the rejection of much good work. Rather than go through a process of gradual elimination I found it best to find a number of very promising selections which I could use as a touchstone for evaluation. That worked well until I realised my pile of ‘very promising’ numbered fifteen manuscripts and I needed to choose six.

In the end my six has become seven. They are outstanding. While I am looking forward to seeing the longer manuscripts which they will be submitting, I dread the difficult choices which I will have to make.

Good luck to them and to all the entrants. I loved reading your work.

We are pleased to announce the publication of Marrowbones - Songs and Sonnets - by Peter Branson. (SPM Publications, 25-June-2021). This powerful poetry collection won first prize in the Sentinel Poetry Book Competition 2019 judged by Noel Williams.

In these poems Peter Branson shows a deep regard for both the environment and social history. At times he wears his heart on his sleeve as he rages against injustice and at others he generously shares with us his sense of nature, his keen observation giving him as clear a voice as any birdsong. He creates for his readers a social and natural landscape that has both a terrible and a beautiful reality.
