NEW EPISODE OF Arts Connect Art Throb Podcast. A unique conversaton with artist William Duffy - a recent recipient of Louisville Visual Arts's Legacy Award - about his solo show currently at the Speed Art Museum as the second installment of the Louisville Black Avant-Garde series, highlighting local, historically significant Black visual artists active from 1950–1980. Formally trained as a painter, it is as a self-taught carver/sculptor that he is better known. Talking about his earlier works as well as his wonderful charm and storytelling ability make this an engaging episode.
Have a little listen and then go see his show in Louisville. Catch Yayoi Kusama's Infinity Room at the same time! Double treats!

NEW EPISODE OF Art Throb Podcast!
Did you know that there will soon be a sculptural monument commemorating the African American enslaved couple Lewis and Harriet Hayden who escaped from Lexington and subsequently were active in the Underground Railway helping people from here and across the South to escape to freedom?
In this episode I have a great conversation with Larry Kezele who, from the conceptual onset ten years ago, was and still is leading the project, and Ms Yvonne Giles who is also involved and has an awesome wealth of historical knowledge. Both are fascinating to talk with.

NEW EPISODE OF Art Throb Podcast! Fun conversation with Constance Grayson about her current work currently at New Editions Gallery that was inspired by the piano suite Pictures at an Exhibition written by Mussorgsky.
Mussorgsky wrote this work after having been to an exhibition of work (400 pieces!) by his recently deceased friend Viktor Hartmann. Constance created her work (15 pieces!) after listening to Mussorgsky's composition a million times! She talks about how she sees music in shapes and colors.
So, full circle - art to music and then music back to art!

Exciting NEW EPISODE OF Arts Connect Art Throb Podcast!!
A conversation with Shawn E. Okpebholo, this year's Lexington Philharmonic's Composer-in-Residence.
His work, 'Two Black Churches', originally written for baritone and piano, he rearranged for a full orchestra and it world premiered recently at the Singletary Center for the Arts.
Shawn, a Lexington native and Tates Creek HS Graduate, earned his Doctoral Degree in composition from Cincinnati's College-Conservatory of Music and is now the Jonathan Blanchard Distinguished Professor of Composition at Wheaton College-Conservatory of Music.
He talks about growing up in the Projects, in Government subsidised housing and how thanks to his public school arts education, the Salvation Army and various mentors along the way, as well as an early experience at a Lexington Philharmonic concert, provided direction and the pathway for his successful career as a composer.
His compositions have been featured on twelve commercially released albums, three of which are GRAMMY nominated.
The Washington Post has described his works as 'fresh and new and fearless,' as well as 'devastatingly beautiful'. Certainly his recent concert here in Lexington was sublime.
Two Black Churches serves as a musical reflection of two significant and tragic events perpetrated at the hands of white supremacists in two Black churches, decades apart. The text of both movements are poems one written by Dudley Randall titled "The Ballad of Birmingham" and the other a specifically commissioned piece by Marcus Amaker, called "Rain".

NEW EPISODE!! Arts Connect's Art Throb Podcast. I talk with Rob Southard, photodocumentarian and artist, about his work, and in particular his ongoing series titled Kentucky Labor. Photographs he started taking during the pandemic that have taken him all over the state capturing regular folk doing their jobs and it's fascinating what people do for a livelihood! The range is broad as you can imagine, and the series continues with hopefully a book or exhibition on the horizon.

NEW EPISODE OF Arts Connect Art Throb Podcast!!
Who knew you could make a banjo out of a copper tea kettle?? Apparently Daniel Graham did, and did... and also made other instruments out of unique and astonishing materials. All hand made and hand carved. He loves to experiment and test the limits. He asks himself: why make something conventional or
standard-typical? And he doesn't...
Beautiful craftsmanship, attention to detail, and made with love. Have a little listen to our conversation and hear him play for you. Right here in our midst.

NEW EPISODE OF Arts Connect's Art Throb Podcast!!
Loved having a conversation with my friend Jayne Moore Waldrop about her upcoming book "She Remembered It All: The Art of Memory Painter Helen LaFrance" which will be published next month by Lexington's Shadelandhouse Modern Press, LLC.
This is a children's book beautifully illustrated by Michael J McBride and an inspiration for young aspiring artists.
Helen LaFrance, who was born and lived her whole life in Mayfield, KY., died in 2020 having lived to 101! She managed to capture in her artwork both the scene and spirit of a time and place now long gone.

EPISODE 21.
Did you know that Keeneland has its own Library with a robust world-renowned collection? That it also hosts museum-standard exhibitions and offers a seasonal lecture series? It's been a golden research center for writers such as Geraldine Brooks who spent hours there doing research for her best-selling novel HORSE.
I enjoyed talking with Roda Ferraro the Director of Keeneland Library and learned so much more about their services.
You might too. Have a little listen!

NEW EPISODE OF ART THROB PODCAST!
Conversation with Dr. fari nzinga, CURATOR OF AFRICAN AND NATIVE AMERICAN COLLECTIONS AT THE SPEED MUSEUM, about the amazing exhibit in the Chelgren Gallery at The Speed Museum, titled LOUISVILLE'S BLACK AVANT-GARDE: Robert L Douglas.
Douglas, along with several contemporaries formed a group of like minded artists called the Louisville Art Workshop that became a creative hub in the city with a variety of educational workshops, artistic critiques for artists to hone their craft, and group shows for emerging talents to display their work. Through their community-centered approach, the group fostered a dynamic and forward-thinking atmosphere that challenged artistic and cultural norms, and was notably one of the only integrated artistic groups at the time. Despite his talents and experience as an artist, Douglas was denied work in the arts early in his career due to discriminatory hiring practices, and he turned to serving the community through social work and political organizing. Douglas brought this perspective to his work with the Louisville Art Workshop, helping to establish a social mission for the organization whose ultimate goal was to support and uplift the community instead of measuring success based on commercial interests.
It's a terrific show and I had a wonderfully lively conversation with fari nzinga who was the curator.

NEW EPISODE OF Art Throb Podcast!
Episode No.10 of the Art Throb Podcast features Steve Hester who talks about his book Malchus and Me, a novel that retells the story of the Passion of Christ, but through the eyes of the motley crew from the wild side of Jerusalem who manage to get caught up in those final days. It is a story of salvation, told from the margins - a place that Steve readily admits he's been, but come back from. A 21st-century adaptation of a two-thousand-year-old story and immensely human and at times humorous.
