University of Louisville athletic director Josh Heird said firing men's basketball head coach Kenny Payne was the "correct decision" for the program. U of L parted ways with Payne on Wednesday after the Cards finished the season with an 8-24 record.
Heird said a search for a new coach will begin immediately.
"We need to get his hire right," he said during a press conference. "We will leave no stone unturned in our search."
