Popular materials for creating a fan screen in China were: palm leaves, feathers, bamboo, fabric and paper. The first fans were made from palm leaves. Then fans began to be made from multi-colored long pheasant tail feathers - they were used by noble people. They were replaced by semicircular fans made of thin bamboo torches. At the next stage in the history of the manufacture of fans, the material was replaced by silk, which was called “qi wan”.
Bamboo, ivory, reed, sandalwood, tortoiseshell, mollusk shells were used for the skeleton of the fan. Today, mica, plastic, metal are widely used.
