HAMMERS STUN BULLETS : PROGRESS TO CASTEL CUP FINALS

Mzuzu City Hammers have booked their slot in the 2024 Castel Cup finals match against Mighty Mukuru Wanderers courtesy of a 4-1 post match penalties win over deffending Champions FCB Nyasa Big Bullets.

In what was a closely contested semi final match at Kamuzu stadium in Blantyre, both teams created big changes during the normal regulation time but failed to utilize the chances .

After failure to break the deadlock, the match went to post match penalties where bullets failed to convert two of their penalties through a miss from Collins Mujuru and a save from Hammers shot stopper Chancy Mtete to give the Cityzens a 4-1 advantage advancing to the cup finals.

Hammers will now face Mighty Mukuru Wanderers on Saturday this week at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe.

Malawi Congress Party (MCP) has condemned sentiments made by the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) members during rallies , stating that the sentiments are capable of inciting political violence prior to the 2025 elections.

Party secretary general Richard Chimwendo Banda made the remarks during a press briefing organized by the party on Tuesday this week at the party's headquarters in Lilongwe.

During the press briefing Banda stated that the party is concerned with the acts of political violence being orchestrated by DPP highlighting that the acts are a clear indication that DPP has no respect for country's democratic set up , rule of law and the rights of the citizens.

He also condemned the recent remarks made by Member of Parliament for Mulanje Bale Victor Musowa during a DPP rally in the southern region where he said that people in the region must chase anyone affiliated to MCP .

He then called upon journalists, Civil Society Organizations (CSO's) as well as other Stakeholders to condemn these acts for the respect of democracy and human rights.

“We condemn the remarks made by DPP senior leader, Victor Musowa who is also Member of Parliament for Mulanje Bale constituency for his remarks that were meant to incite violence among Malawians. We call upon leaders to prioritize dialogue in the furtherance of peace and preservation of stability and unity of the nation. We therefore, unequivocally reject and condemn all forms of violent extremism and barbaric remarks Musowa used at the Ndirande rally,” said Chimwendo Banda who is also Minister of Local Government, Unity and Culture.

Citizens in the country have been witnessing a series of acts of political violence ranging from murders to not being allowed to conduct peaceful demonstrations prior to the general elections next year.

The Insurance Institute of Malawi says that many people believe insurance is only for those living in cities, which is one reason why few Malawians use insurance services.

The president of the institute, Reuben Kamanga Kawerere, said this yesterday in Blantyre during the final round of a debate competition for young employees from different insurance companies. The debate focused on the insurance services available in Malawi and ways to improve them.

Sophie Nkhonjera, Chief Risk Officer at Old Mutual Malawi, said her company sponsored the event with K8.9 million to raise awareness and help insurance workers connect with each other.

A team from Britam Insurance won the competition and received a prize of K1 million. In total, six teams participated. The second and third-place teams received K700,000 and K500,000 respectively.

CMD CALLS FOR POLITICAL TOLERANCE

Center for Multi Party Democracy (CMD) has called parties in the country to exercise political tolerance and desist from acts of political violence as the country is preparing for general elections next year.

CMD chairperson Dr Elias Chakwera has made the remarks during the Umodzi day commemoration currently underway in Mzuzu.

In his remarks Chakwera stated that it is alarming to see acts of Political violence being witnessed in the country ranging from political orchestrated murders witnessed recently in Blantyre to the act of Political violence which saw unknown people carrying panga knives threatening peaceful demonstrators in Lilongwe.
