Malawi Congress Party (MCP) has condemned sentiments made by the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) members during rallies , stating that the sentiments are capable of inciting political violence prior to the 2025 elections.
Party secretary general Richard Chimwendo Banda made the remarks during a press briefing organized by the party on Tuesday this week at the party's headquarters in Lilongwe.
During the press briefing Banda stated that the party is concerned with the acts of political violence being orchestrated by DPP highlighting that the acts are a clear indication that DPP has no respect for country's democratic set up , rule of law and the rights of the citizens.
He also condemned the recent remarks made by Member of Parliament for Mulanje Bale Victor Musowa during a DPP rally in the southern region where he said that people in the region must chase anyone affiliated to MCP .
He then called upon journalists, Civil Society Organizations (CSO's) as well as other Stakeholders to condemn these acts for the respect of democracy and human rights.
“We condemn the remarks made by DPP senior leader, Victor Musowa who is also Member of Parliament for Mulanje Bale constituency for his remarks that were meant to incite violence among Malawians. We call upon leaders to prioritize dialogue in the furtherance of peace and preservation of stability and unity of the nation. We therefore, unequivocally reject and condemn all forms of violent extremism and barbaric remarks Musowa used at the Ndirande rally,” said Chimwendo Banda who is also Minister of Local Government, Unity and Culture.
Citizens in the country have been witnessing a series of acts of political violence ranging from murders to not being allowed to conduct peaceful demonstrations prior to the general elections next year.
