We met while working at Grand Designs magazine a decade ago and soon realised over a spot of lunchtime vino that not only did we work well together, we also had many shared interests out of the workplace too, including a passion for good food, the arts, travel and our very pesky dogs Zuma and Herbert! Our friendship grew and, while we both left Grand Designs for pastures new, we remained good friends and springboards for each other to bounce ideas off of in our professional and personal lives.
Fast forward 10 years and we’re now both freelance writers, married and have two children apiece – Lily (3) and Ada (7) – Sophie and Charlie’s daughters – and Laurie (2) and Isabella (4) – Charlotte and Martin’s son and daughter. It was over a cuppa one day (gone are the days of lunch-time drinking) when we realised there was a gap in the market for a magazine dedicated to family-friendly spaces. So we decided to put our writing skills, shared passion for homes and interiors and 30+ years’ of editorial experience to good use. And that’s how the idea to create @nest_magazine – the home of modern family living – evolved.
We’ll be posting lots of inspirational and achievable family-friendly house projects, room makeovers, clever home hacks, shopping ideas, expert advice and essential top tips all in an easy, quick-read format regularly during the week. While we’ll post at weekends, we hope you don’t mind that we’ll be saving our responses to queries and comments until Monday morning as we’ll be busy hanging out with our brood on Saturdays and Sundays for that precious family time.
We also appreciate that some of you (like us) enjoy a longer read while the kids are napping or you have a spare (albeit rare) half-hour to yourself. And so, for those who want more in-depth content, follow the link in our bio to subscribe to our Nest newsletter via Substack where you’ll gain exclusive access to full reader-home projects, in-depth expert advice
With more than 30 years' experience in the homes and interiors industry between us, we have seen our fair share of aspirational homes. However, when we started our families, it made us look at interiors in a new way. Storage for stashing the toys suddenly seemed a top priority. We looked at fabrics differently and questioned whether they would stain or be hardwearing. Stunning marble coffee tables now appeared dangerous rather than demure (especially when you’ve got toddlers running around). And so an idea was hatched – @nest_magazine. Available on Instagram, the instazine will provide quick, easy-to-read features and stunning photography focusing on family-friendly homes, architecture and design, as well as all the crumbs, mud and spillages in between.
