CivicSpark Fellows Jason Scott-Sheets and Camille Graham shared their wisdom as part of a panel at the 32nd annual CivicWell Policymakers Conference on The Future of the Climate Movement. They were joined by futurist and AAPI Data Director Karthick Ramakrishnan and Yolo County Supervisor Lucas Frerichs. So many local elected officials in the room have Fellows at their agencies as well!

🚀In partnership with , we’re excited to share our latest report on Mental Health Experiences in California. ‘Piecing the Puzzle of AANHPI Mental Health’ aims to deepen our understanding of AA and NHPI mental health experiences. Through data analysis, literature review, and insights from community leaders, we’re piecing together a comprehensive picture. . 🧩✨

🔑Here are the report key findings:
💡Mental Health Support Needs: 1 in 4 Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander adults and 1 in 6 Asian American adults report a need for mental health support, highlighting significant mental health stressors within these communities.

💡Experiences with Discrimination and Hate Incidents: Nearly half of AANHPI adults reported everyday experiences with discrimination, and 1 in 5 Asian American adults also report being the victim of a hate incident or crime.

💡Concerns About Gun Violence: Nearly half of AANHPI adults (45%) expressed worry about being a victim of gun violence, a rate that far exceeds that of the overall California population (30%).

💡Suicidal Ideation: Over 1 in 5 Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander adults and over 1 in 10 Asian American adults report experiencing suicidal ideation.

💡Barriers to Accessing Mental Health Services: Among those AANHPI adults who identified a need for mental health support, 42% of Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander adults and 31% of Asian American adults reported difficulty in accessing mental health services.

The purpose of this report is to:

🧩Piece together a fuller picture of AA & NHPI mental health through data, literature review, and community leader feedback
🧩Deepen the discussion on the nuances of AA and NHPI mental health
🧩Spur action to eliminate barriers to mental health utilization and access by taking into consideration historical, cultural, and linguistic contexts
