Ida Gray Nelson Rollins, the first African American female dentist, was born in Clarksville, Tennessee, on March 4, 1867. She became an orphan when her mother, Jennie Gray, died in her early teens.
⠀
After her mother’s death, Ida was raised by her aunt, Caroline Gray, who had three other children, one son and two daughters.
⠀
While in high school, Rollins worked as a seamstress and dressmaker and in the dental office of Jonathan and William Taft.  Ida Gray graduated from Gaines Public High School in 1887 when she was 20 years old.
⠀
The part-time job in the dental office was instrumental in her desire to become a dentist.  Jonathan Taft was the dean of the Ohio College of Dentistry. In 1875, he became the first dean of the Dental College at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan. ⠀
⠀
Her ability to pass the entrance exam into the University of Michigan was aided by the experience she gained working in his dental office.  Gray enrolled in October 1887 and, three years later, she became the first African American woman to graduate with a Doctorate of Dental Surgery in the United States.
⠀
After graduation in 1890, Gray returned to Cincinnati, Ohio and opened a private dental practice.  She remained in this practice until 1895 when she married Sanford Nelson.
⠀
Ida Gray Nelson Rollins participated in a number of women’s organization and served as president of the Professional Women’s Club of Chicago.  She retired from her dentistry practice sometime in the mid-1930s.

Robert Tanner Freeman is the first professionally trained black dentist in the United States. A child of slaves, he eventually entered Harvard University and graduated only four years after the end of the Civil War on May 18, 1869.
⠀
⠀
Robert Tanner Freeman and classmate George Franklin Grant became the first blacks to enter the 1867 Harvard Dental School inaugural class of sixteen. Upon Freeman’s graduation in 1869, he and Grant became the first African American dentists in the United States.
⠀
⠀
Dr. Freeman returned to Washington, D.C. after his graduation to open his own practice. He became a pillar in the D.C. black community because of his commitment to mentoring other African American youth interested in the medical profession. Unfortunately, his death came in 1873, only four years after he received his dental school degree, by contracting a water-borne disease.
⠀
⠀
Dr. Freeman’s legacy extends beyond his short life. He was honored by the National Dental Association in 1907 by creating the Robert T. Freeman Dental Society.

James McCune Smith, MD (1813 — 1865)

James McCune Smith, MD, was a man of firsts. In 1837, he became the first black American to receive a medical degree — although he had to enroll at the University of Glasgow Medical School because of racist admissions practices at U.S. medical schools. And that was far from his only groundbreaking accomplishment. He was also the first black person to own and operate a pharmacy in the United States and the first black physician to be published in U.S. medical journals.

Smith used his writing talents to challenge shoddy science, including racist notions of African-Americans. Most notably, he debunked such theories in Thomas Jefferson’s Notes on the State of Virginia. Smith was a staunch abolitionist and friend of Frederick Douglass. He contributed to Douglass’ newspaper and wrote the introduction to his book, My Bo***ge and My Freedom.

Rebecca Lee Crumpler, MD (1831 — 1895)

In 1864, after years as a nurse, Rebecca Lee Crumpler became the first black woman in the United States to receive an MD degree. She earned that distinction at the New England Female Medical College in Boston, Massachusetts — where she also was the institution’s only black graduate. After the Civil War, Crumpler moved to Richmond, Virginia, where she worked with other black doctors who were caring for formerly enslaved people in the Freedmen’s Bureau. While she faced sexism and other forms of harassment, Crumpler ultimately found the experience transformative. "I returned to my former home, Boston, where I entered into the work with renewed vigor, practicing outside, and receiving children in the house for treatment; regardless, in a measure, of remuneration," she wrote.

The Occlusal Table would like to honor Meharry Medical College for Black History Month!
⠀
THE SALT WAGON STORY
⠀
In the 1820s, 16-year-old Samuel Meharry was hauling a load of salt through Kentucky when his wagon slid off the road into a muddy ditch. With rain and nightfall limiting his options, Samuel searched for help.
⠀
He saw a modest cabin that was home to a black family recently freed from slavery. The family, still vulnerable to slave hunters paid to return freedmen to bo***ge, risked their freedom to give Meharry food and shelter for the night.
⠀
At morning's light, they helped lift the wagon from the mud and Meharry continued his journey. The black family's act of kindness touched young Meharry so deeply that he vowed to repay it. I have no money now, he said as he departed, but, when I am able, I shall do something for your race. Tragically, history never recorded the name of the courageous black family, and perhaps their identity even receded in the mind of Samuel Meharry as he grew prosperous in the years that follow.
⠀
Today, the contemporary Salt Wagon image symbolizes those several acts of kindness and philanthropy and countless others performed by the College's loyal supporters.
⠀
Facts:
⠀
✊🏽Committed to our motto: “Worship of God Through Service to Mankind” as a United Methodist Church related institution
⠀
✊🏽Leading producer of African-American dentists. The estimated percentage of black dentists who are Meharry graduates is 41 percent.
⠀
✊🏽A top producer of primary care physicians; ranked second among 141 academic health science centers in the “social mission” of medical education
⠀
✊🏽Meharry Medical College has the highest percentage of African Americans graduating with PhDs, in the biomedical sciences, in the country.
