New Quality Improvement Study: Improving Antibiotic Timing for Pediatric Open Fractures

A recent study published in the Journal of Trauma Nursing demonstrates the impact of a nurse-initiated protocol on timely antibiotic administration for pediatric patients with open fractures.

Key findings:

Patients receiving antibiotics within 60 minutes of arrival increased from 58.5% to 84.4%
The protocol empowered nurses and paramedics to order antibiotics from triage
Improvement was sustained for 24 months post-implementation

Why it matters:

Early antibiotic administration is critical for reducing infections and complications in open fractures. This nurse-led initiative shows how evidence-based protocols can significantly improve care delivery and patient outcomes.

The study highlights the value of empowering frontline staff and using quality improvement methods to enhance trauma care. It provides a model that other institutions could adapt to improve their own antibiotic administration practices for pediatric trauma patients.

21/09/2023

It's clear that trauma nurses are making a difference in rural trauma settings. A recent pre- and post-intervention study at a rural Level I trauma center shows that the deployment of trauma resuscitation emergency care (TREC) nurses has been associated with a decrease in the median emergency department times within the first hour.

This research demonstrates the benefit of having dedicated trauma nurses in rural areas. While much more research needs to be done, this is a promising development in improving access to high-quality care.
