Hari Kondabolu: "I grew up in Jackson Heights New York which might be the most diverse place of the most diverse place and my friends were either from all over the world or their parents were, and immigrant heritage was such a big part... of New Yorkers' identity. So watching tv and film I was like 'Oh most of my friends aren't here, we don't exist, we aren't represented.' So that was my first clue that something was up and that whiteness was valued more than anything else."

F.A.Q.: Are the films submitted to ColorReel required to be exclusively shown there?

Answer: We're open to non-exclusive content. We will work with the filmmaker on a case-by-case basis because different types of films have different needs. E.g. music videos need to be widely available on to get the music out, so there is no expectation of exclusivity for those. As long as the filmmaker is making an income, is not being exploited, and as long as it doesn't put ColorReel at legal risk, then we're open to non-exclusive deals. There will be financial incentive for filmmakers who make their films exclusive to ColorReel, but as a young platform we know we need to build and support everyone and do what's best for our filmmakers.

Tyler Perry on the "poetic justice" of building new studio on former Confederate Army base

Recently, Tyler Perry built a 330-acre movie studio complex in Atlanta GA. Tyler Perry Studios (tylerperrystudios.com) is now the largest studio in the country with 12 sound stages named after Black Hollywood Icons. His action is really the embodiment of "building your own table," recognizing that he's ignored in Hollywood but not letting that stop him for doing big things and opening doors. He's creating his own Hollywood right there in Atlanta. Here at we can definitely respect that. Congrats Tyler Perry!
