Coffee subscription company Bean Box has launched a crowdfunding campaign on StartEngine and raised more than $30,000 within a day.

The equity crowdfunding platform opens the door for non-accredited investors to buy equity in early-stage startups, reports GeekWire.

Bean Box CEO Matthew Berk said the decision to go the crowdfunding route comes as traditional venture capital moves away from consumer-oriented investments and focuses more on newer technology like artificial intelligence.

In a coffee-growing region of Colombia, the world's third-largest producer, a group of farmers have declared a truce with an indigenous inhabitant they once hunted but now hail - the "Spectacled Bear" of the tropical Andes.

Calling a halt to their forest encroachment, the farmers are instead sacrificing parts of their land for the benefit of South America's last surviving bear species, believed to have been the inspiration for the popular children's book character Paddington Bear.

The stores, approved by the city in March and April, could be the first Dutch Bros. for Orange County.

A preliminary plan submitted and approved in January in La Habra would see another Dutch Bros. sprout from a vacant lot on Beach Blvd.

Before he was CEO of Delta Air Lines, Ed Bastian’s first job was on a summer work crew for the county highway department; he cleaned roads, picked up trash and paved roads.

The next three summers after that, Ed worked at a rock quarry where they made cement. It was hot, it was nasty, but it gave him the incentive to say, “I’m never going to do this for a living.”

After the long workdays, he’d return home to his eight siblings in Poughkeepsie, NY.

Not only was their modest sized house filled with the constant craziness of a large family but it was also the headquarters for his mom and dad’s dental practice; oh, and grandma eventually moved in too.

“As soon as I graduated high school, I was like, ‘I’m not going back,’” says Bastian.

Delta CEO Ed Bastian grew up as the oldest of his nine siblings in Poughkeepsie, NY, where his father ran a dental practice out of their family's home.

Broadcom founder, Henry Nicholas III (Nick), has this vivid childhood memory of chasing his father down one day, crying and begging to know where he was going.

He didn’t know that his mom, Marcella, was fed up with the abuse she had been enduring at the hands of this alcoholic man; she told him to leave.

With the help of friends and extended family, Nick’s mother managed to survive with her two children until she received $5,000 in academic grant money.

At which point, she loaded up a U-Haul with what little belongings they had, quit her job, and moved her family to California, where she’d study journalism at UCLA.

In Los Angeles, she remarried to screenwriter Robert Leach. Nick credits his stepfather with nurturing his passion for science by helping him set up his first real chemistry lab.

After graduating from Santa Monica High School in 1977, Nick immediately enrolled in the United States Air Force Academy - aspiring to become a fighter pilot.

Ultimately forced to drop out of the program, he reveals, “they wouldn’t let me fly fighter jets. I was too tall. It’s the one time in my life I feel that I failed.”

Henry Nicholas iii graduated from Santa Monica High School in 1977. He immediately enrolled in the United States Air Force Academy to be a fighter pilot.

Edwin C. Barnes had a burning internal drive to go into business with America’s most famed inventor, Thomas Edison.

He was lacking in a few areas though, he had no invention to pitch, no particular skills of use, and couldn’t scrape together the meager amount of money it’d take to pay his rail fare to Orange, New Jersey.

Despite these shortcomings, Barnes made his way to the train station only to be reassured that he did not have the funds to continue his journey.

Rather than accept such an unfortunate fate, he decided to travel by “blind baggage.” To those unfamiliar with the term, this means he hopped onto a freight train and squatted his way to East Orange.

Barnes eventually arrived at Edison’s doorstep and managed to talk his way into meeting the inventor.

Describing the moment he first saw Barnes, Edison says, “He stood there before me, looking like an ordinary tramp, but there was something in the expression of his face which conveyed the impression that he was determined to get what he had come after.”

Barnes did not get his partnership with Edison on his first interview. He did get a chance to work in the Edison offices, at a very nominal wage.

Being Chinese in apartheid South Africa, Los Angeles Times and Los Angeles Lakers owner Patrick Soon-Shiong found himself born into a peculiar position; he wasn’t considered colored or black and if only one thing was for sure, he wasn’t white.

“I couldn’t own property, couldn’t vote, couldn’t go to a white school, couldn’t go to a white hospital, had to carry an identity card but could get on a white bus, could go to a white movie, I couldn’t go on the train – well, I had to go to the back of the train,” he says.

Soon-Shiong’s parents moved to South Africa following the Japanese invasion of mainland China. They opened a general store but struggled to keep the market afloat.

Patrick says he learned a lot of what he knows about business at that store. But of all his childhood experiences, what truly piqued his interest was the odd side-gig his father had going on.

Patrick Soon-Shiong was born and raised in Port Elizabeth, South Africa during apartheid. His parents struggled to make a living with the market they owned.

Cisco CEO, Chuck Robbins, is the grandson of a preacher and rural Georgia farmer.

“The farm was primarily just for sustenance, just to feed everyone. They grew everything, from corn to vegetables. We had chickens, pigs, cows,” he says.

Experiencing some moving around as a child, Chuck found himself attending middle and high school in North Carolina.

While there, he won a basketball state championship for Rocky Mount High, worked at a lawn mower repair shop, and earned his way into the University of North Carolina.

Early on, he attempted to make it onto the basketball team at UNC but got delegated to the junior varsity squad.

We forgive him though, the varsity team at that time featured this guy named Michael Jordan that turned out to be pretty good.

At the very least, Chuck can say he got to scrimmage the G.O.A.T. during practice!

Chuck Robbins was born in Grayson, Georgia during the mid 1960s. As a child he'd help out on his grandfathers farm by collecting eggs, fixing fences, etc.

At 17 years old, founder of ABC Supply Company, Diane Hendricks, gave birth to her first child. She remembers not being able to go to school when she was pregnant.

“I would go up after the other students had left, and do my test and hand in my school work. It was embarrassing but it was okay,” she says.

After graduating high school, Diane and her husband up and moved to Janesville, Wisconsin, where he found work at a Chrysler plant while she got a job on the assembly line of Parker Pen.

Hendricks admits that motherhood made her life challenging at the time. However, she makes clear, “It didn’t stop me from wanting to reach my dream. In fact I think I became even more focused on what I wanted to achieve.”

With this being said, at 21 years old, Diane began her career selling real estate, divorced her high school sweetheart, and in late 1960s America was already molding the world into her ideal state of being.

Billionaire Diane Hendricks was born in 1947 on a dairy farm in rural Wisconsin. She gave birth to her first child when she was just 18 years old.

Scoring in the top 0.2 percent of students who took Turkey’s national standardized test, at age 11, Osman Kibar was sent to attend secondary school at Robert College in Istanbul.

In order to receive a higher education, Osman moved to the United States when he was just 17 years old; great Southern California weather was the primary condition upon which he chose to attend Pomona College.

A number of degrees and a handful of successful start-ups later, Osman had grown disenchanted with who he was becoming. “One morning, I woke up, I was an investment banker,” he says.

The man then quit his job, moved to San Diego, got involved at a start-up incubator, and dedicated his life to his passion of developing biotechnology.

In order to pursue a higher education at Pomona College, Osman Kibar moved from his home of Turkey to Southern California when he was just 17 years old.

Former Ford Motor Company CEO, Jim Hackett, often jokes that he is the youngest of four boys because his parents didn’t have enough money for anymore children.

Taking into account his father was an All-American at Ohio State University, and his older brother a linebacker who played in the Rose Bowl, Jim saw football as a means to earning a higher education.

He fought his way on to Michigan’s practice squad and, in a twist of fate, never really got to play on game day.

Jim was the guy who couldn’t rely on talent alone, that had to put in the extra work, and in doing so fueled a dedication for his craft that few could match.

Therefore, this incredible work ethic he procured remained unfulfilled for half a decade; that is until Hackett was given an entry-level position at Proctor & Gamble after graduating with a bachelor’s degree in 1977.

Jim Hackett was born in London, Ohio in 1955. Being the son of an All-American Ohio State football player led him to pick up the sport at an early age.

After Paul Merage, the inventor of Hot Pockets, graduated from UC Berkeley, he launched a career in corporate America; getting his first big break with an entry-level marketing position at Maxwell House Coffee.

He’d find a similar role at Hunt Wesson, the renowned ketchup maker. However, as time dwindled away, he couldn’t help but constantly remember his father’s exciting tales of entrepreneurship.

Even as Paul sat in what was likely a less than thrilling office space at 30 years old, he never stopped allowing his mind’s eye to wander.

He had a burden of sorts bestowed upon him at a very young age – that is the burden of knowing oneself’s unlimited potential.

Then came the day when Paul suggested to his brother David that they start a business importing and marketing consumer products from Europe and Japan.

The two brothers subsequently went on a scouting trip to Europe and discovered Belgian waffles.

Finding the money to start Chef America wasn't so easy, Paul Merage was forced to risk it all, taking out second and third mortgages on his own home.

Disney CEO, Bob Chapek, was born amongst the booming midwestern suburbs of Chicago in 1960 to Bernard and Marie Chapek.

His father, a World War II veteran, found employment as an oil refinery machinist while his mother worked at an insurance agency in East Chicago.

The hardworking nature of his parents left Bob returning to an empty home often. “I think I was one of the original latch-key kids,” he says.

In many ways, the once bustling town Chapek grew up in is no longer the same place he once called home.

Some would classify it as a casualty of America’s declining “Rust Belt,” meanwhile, others cling to ever-fading memories of a gilded past, holding out with hopes of a turnaround.

Regardless of anyone’s opinion, Bob chose to leave and never looked back.

Like any classic hero, born in obscurity, forged by trials, and eager to make a difference in the world, He first began working at Disney in 1993.

Bob Chapek was born amongst the bustling suburbs of Chicago in 1960. His father, Bernard, a World War II veteran, worked at an oil refinery as a machinest.

While on vacation in Tampa Bay, Bob Duggan received an unexpected call from another Pharmacyclics board member. His associate informed him that a mass exodus from the companies top leadership was occurring.

Duggan, slated to become Pharmacyclics new C.E.O., was not a scientist, researcher, or expert in any of the drugs his company so relied on developing.

Although, he did have a certain spirit about defeating cancer. He lost a child to the disease, which ultimately led to his self-education in the field of medicine.

He admits, “I knew more about brain tumors than the average guy walking down the street, because we had to look for support in handling his condition.”

After his son passed away, he always thought to himself, “If there’s ever something I can do in that area that would make a difference…”

Robert Duggan was born in Berkely, CA during the mid-1940s. His father, who immigrated to the United States from Ireland, worked as an industrial engineer.

Billionaire Lynsi Snyder is the granddaughter of Harry and Esther Snyder, the celebrated founders of an iconic west coast hamburger restaurant chain called In-N-Out Burger.

Back in 1948, Harry introduced California’s first drive-thru hamburger stand in a space barely 10 square feet at Francisquito and Garvey in Baldwin Park.

Out of his garage, he invented the speaker-box, enabling true “drive-thru” service for customers on the go.

Obviously, like any heir to a family fortune, she was born into a pretty great situation.

However, taking into account that Lynsi started at the food prep station, worked up the management ranks, took on roles in various corporate departments, and harnesses a very conservative nature when protecting the meaningful traditions of her beloved family’s business, you’ll find that there’s probably no better person to run the company in our world.

Lynsi Snyder started like anybody else at In-N-Out, by doing prep work such as coring tomatoes, peeling potatoes, and crying while slicing onions.
