Little Joe

Little Joe A magazine about qu**rs and cinema, mostly. Little Joe is a new biannual publication looking at film from a different perspective.

It is a direct move away from the traditional method of reviewing all current and future releases towards a more selective and eclectic focus on films that inspire alternative discourse. "The magazine is a kind of heir to both Film Culture and After Dark, and its implicit project is a vital one: mapping the subterranean canon of gay and le***an cinema, past and present, drawing together its many a

nd varied histories, frequently from the margins (vanguards?) of taste and style."
—Light Industry

"This new and beautifully designed magazine shines of an acute aura of q***r VHS nostalgia, but more importantly is about rediscovering and knowing more about those unlikely heroes who were so mesmerizing the first time the tape run in the video player."
—Mousse Magazine

"While it may be only on the second issue, Little Joe has already earned itself a cult following... The magazine documents both the emergent history of gay film, how it evolved, what it meant and where it stands today."
—DazedDigital.com

“For a look into cinematic history with a decidedly q***r eye, you could do worse than picking up the beautifully designed Little Joe. The magazine gives overlooked movies an idiosyncratic new outing.”

1–31 January 2016

Set over the course of a year, Adam Shecter's New Year is a haunting portrait of a city, told in a form halfway between a graphic novel and a dream. The latest issue of Little Joe is included in BUTT Magazine's latest book and zine review.

"The latest issue of Little Joe is just what its dedicated fan base has been waiting for. Generous and girthy at two hundred and forty pages, printed with black and purple spot color inks on tactile, uncoated paper with soft cover, it’s an attractive package. This fifth issue features a good mix of subjects and contributors such as: Desiree Akhavan, Abdellah Taïa, Kenneth Anger — they even convinced Hollywood royalty Tab Hunter to recommend his favorite films in the well-designed Video Library feature. It comes with some adorable temporary tattoos drawn by Mike Kuchar, especially for lovers."

Thanks BUTT!

Tonight, 8pm at White Columns, New York, artists Ginger Brooks Takahashi and Sam Ashby (Editor, Little Joe) will be presenting a progression of the project they started in Cherry Grove last summer as part of Fire Island Artist Residency (FIAR). Drawing from Sam's archive of films made on the island, and activated through Ginger's live modular synthesizer soundtrack, FIRE ISLAND FILM + SOUND is an audio-visual experience that explores the Island as a site of q***r exile, utopia, sexual liberation and trauma. Curated by Evan Garza as part of Dirty Looks: On Location, the event is free (with suggested donation) but spaces are limited. Event page: https://www.facebook.com/events/922413214448483/
