⚡ Coming up next week Tuesday is our conversation with Mimi Bartels, General Manager at FilmOne Studios (part of the Filmhouse Group), the largest premium film distribution/production company in West Africa).

👩🏿‍💼 Previously, she was Head of Production and Distribution as Head of Accounts: Nollywood and Independents. She has over 14 years’ experience in story development, film production, media, brand management and alternative investments.

🤑 Amongst other notable efforts, Mimi spearheaded the distribution of 60% of the all-time top 10 box office releases in Nigeria. Her first ever story was developed for a comedy film franchise, Fate of Alakada which was the 2nd highest in box office for 2020 and she produced her first film, Kambili: The Whole 30 yards, a Netflix favourite.

📽 She has produced over 30 commercially successful films and titles released under her reign have spent at least 2wks minimum on the Netflix top 10.

🌟 Mimi Bartels, under FilmOne production/ Studios, has 32 AMVCA nominations and 1 win for films produced & executively produced. She has created 3 series (2 Young adult shows and a dystopian drama) which are in early stages of development.

⭐ Previously, she was the Regional Director for the British Council's Sub-Saharan Africa Arts and Creative Economy Programme.

🗺 She has over 17 years’ experience which spans international cultural relations, and leading creative and digital economy projects at the intersection of tourism and heritage. She is a member of the UNESCO global Expert Panel on the 2005 Convention on Cultural Expressions where she has delivered projects in various locations around the world particularly in Africa and the Caribbean.

🌟 Ojoma has also held other roles working on projects for local and international institutions including the Swedish Arts Council, World Bank, and various national governments to support the development of the creative economy.

🎞 She is co-founder of Pixel Ray Studios, a global film and audiovisual content infrastructure development company currently developing projects in Africa and the Caribbean.

💱 Ojoma sits on the board of ₿ Trust, an organisation set up by Jay Z and Jack Dorsey to support bitcoin development in Africa and around the world.

On this episode, we’re discussing illustration. Our guest is Kayode Onimole, an architect, self-taught illustrator, and art director based in Lagos, Nigeria. Prior to becoming a full-time illustrator and animator, Kayode was Deputy Group Head at Noah's Ark Communications, a Lagos-based advertising agency.

Kayode has worked with various publishing houses in Nigeria, including Kachifo and Ouida Books, to illustrate educational and entertainment books for young readers. He has also worked on numerous comicbooks and commercials. He is the brains behind the comic cartoon strip Crasher for which he won the Comic Connect Comics Meltsown Choice and Critics award for Best webcomic.

He shares with us his journey to illustration, the growth of animation on the African continent, burnout, evolving workspaces, Nigerian brands, and the power of storytelling.
