🚨Hey Chicago Friends! 🚨 November 7th Center on Halsted

I have been chomping at the bit to talk about this and I am so excited to announce- Melodramas of The Midwest, a conversation about the history of the often-overlooked but incredibly important role of drag in the US heartland- between myself and musicologist and drag artist Dr. Sadie Hochman-Ruiz aka Sadie Pins and featuring an exhibition from Ge**er Hart Library and Archives presented by Lyric Opera of Chicago!!! I have been wanting to work with Sadie since we met in February at my last Lyric event and following Ge**er Hart’s instagram for ages and I cannot wait to share what we have all cooked up for you because this is really going to be a rare treat, so grab those tix now at the link!

“Music academia meets drag performance at the Center on Halsted! Drag queen musicologist Dr. Lady J returns after her triumphant Lyric appearances last season, this time joined by fellow music scholar and drag performer Dr. Sadie Hochman-Ruiz. Together, they’ll explore the intersections of drag and opera, while highlighting Chicago’s often overlooked influence in the drag scene.
Before and after the discussion, enjoy a curated display of LGBTQIA+ artifacts from the Ge**er/Hart Library and Archives, with a representative available to answer questions.”

Secure your $10 spot for this unforgettable event. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., with a light reception to follow. Space is limited!

And keep an eye out for more info on the other events I’ll be doing surrounding Lyrics production of Marriage of Figaro the same week!

Just in time for the end of Pride month! 🏳️‍⚧️🏳️‍🌈 It was such an absolute honor and privilege to be interviewed for this article for the freaking History Channel website alongside one of my research heroes since I started working on drag history: the OG drag historian Joe E. Jeffreys, the only drag historian I even knew of when I started down the path of doing this work! Thank you so much to Elizabeth Yuko for writing this great piece and asking me to contribute and being so thorough in getting drag history right 🩷🤍🩵 Happy Pride everybody! Now go read and learn some fascinating drag history!

There is a long history of performers using clothing, makeup and hairstyles to express gender. These were among the first to make waves.
