Kabali rating 3.25***

Superstar Rajinikanth’s highly anticipated flick,Kabali, has opened to record breaking collections all over the globe. Expectations have reached the sky ever since the film’s first look teaser was released, showcasing Rajinikanth in his element. After an unprecedented promotional blitzkrieg, Kabali is all set for a grand release today in India. Let’s see if the film can live up to the massive expectations. Story: The Kabali movie deals with the plight of migrant Indian community, specifically the Tamilians, who lived in Malaysia. About 30 years back in time, many of the Indian laborers working in Malaysia, used to work as drug traffickers and goons under Chinese mafia gangs. One man, Kabaleeswaran alias Kabali (Rajanikanth), takes a stand for the betterment of his community. Himself a gang member working under gangster Sitaramaraj (Naazar), Kabali takes over the gang leadership on Sitaramaraj’s untimely death. With the gang leadership, also come the rival gang confrontations especially with Gang43 lead by the ruthless drug lord Tony Woo (Winston Chao). In his position as a gang leader Kabali also aids his community. He founded the Free Life Foundation, a non-profit organization to help poor uneducated Indian laborers in Malaysia. However, the violence of heading a gang takes its toll on Kabali’s family life, weaving into the movie a family element with the pursuit of Kabali’s wife. The rest of the movie comprises of Kabali and Gang43 trying to overpower each other. Analysis: Talaivar fans and general audience alike, will be wowed by the mesmerizing first fifteen minutes. However, as the narration switches to the core story, the movie suffers a slow pace in the screenplay. The highly popular teaser ‘Kabaaali … Da…’ has set the audience to expect a larger than life heroism spearheaded by a revolutionary Talaivar. However, the director sticks the script and takes his time to narrate the story – something that might not sit well with today’s fast tracked generation. Extra care was taken to portray the life of an immigrant Indian community in Malaysia in the 1980s. The mafia world and their operations are picturized well. The family thread between Kabali and his wife acts as a speed breaker (to an already slow paced narration) and might just not appeal to the audience. Amazing interval block with unexpected action scenes will thrill the audience. All in all, a satisfying first half. The masses might find it difficult to comprehend the struggles of an overseas blue collar worker. Adding to it, expect for the key roles, the supporting cast are Malaysians and Chinese. The story, the backdrop and the characters make it difficult for the common audience to connect with the movie. This might be a bigger problem with the Telugu dubbed version than with the original and might impact box office prospects. The second half starts off with Kabali leaving to India looking for his wife. Cue in thirty minutes of boring scenes which do nothing to help the film. The narration accelerates with Kabali’s return to Malaysia as he takes on Gang43. The well-executed pre-climax and the climax action episodes in which Kabali kills Tony Woo will have your heart beats soaring. The cinematography by G.Murali is world class. He captured the elegance of the Malaysia skyscrapers and ruggedness of mafia locales very well. Santosh Narayanan’s background score is another asset to this movie. Radhika Apte is ill suited for the Kabali’s wife’s role, it failed to get the emotions flowing. Dhanshika who played Kabali’s daughter role is better. Songs: The background theme “Nippu Raa…Neruppu Daa.. ” and the introduction song “Okkade Okkadokkade…“are awesome on screen. Other songs, mostly pathos, are not appealing. Anyways, this is not a movie that banks much on its songs. Positives: SUPERSTAR RAJANIKANTH – After a series of mediocre films, Superstar Rajani strikes back with a stellar performance in Kabali. Leaving behind the over the top mannerisms, the Superstar brings in his magnanimous style in its full glory and his screen presence fills the screen with energy. Outstanding cinematography with slick visuals of Malaysia backdrop. Introduction, interval and climax scenes Negatives: At times the very slow narration test the audience’s patience. Not many commercial elements Nativity issue for Telugu Audience Verdict: Kabali is a movie that launched with extremely high expectations and fails to reach them. The movie will open to mixed talk on the first day. We will need to wait to how it fares on the second day and going forward. Tamil version may fare better than Telugu. Watch with no regret and enjoy watching the ultimate star of our era – The Superstar Rajinikanth’s one man show Kabali !

The first of the two wrestling dramas of 2016 has arrived. It stars Salman 'Bhai' Khan as an accomplished wrestler who comes out of retirement and becomes a mixed martial arts specialist. What's driving him is a tragic loss, a broken heart and forgiveness from the love of his life.
ALSO READ: Here's what Iulia Vantur has to say about Salman Khan's Sultan
The protracted drama begins with Akshay Oberoi (Amit Sadh, reminiscent of Raj Kundra here) struggling to popularize a MMA tournament, Pro Take-Down. His father, played by Pariksh*t Sahni, suggests that he ropes in Sultan (Salman Khan), an erstwhile wrestler, to give the league a patriotic spin and financial boost. But before we see Sultan's paunch, his gloomy demeanour and Rocky-like training regimen, audiences are taken back eight years to see how Sultan fell in love with wrestling. Cut to running into a feisty fair maiden-biker who beats him up in the lanes of Haryana. It appears that Sultan is struck hardest at his heart for he is convinced he has found his life partner in Aarfa (Anushka Sharma), daughter of a wrestling coach and owner of an akhada (Kumud Mishra). Only wrestling, and not love, is high on Aarfa's mind; she aims to win a gold medal at the Olympics and make Haryana and the nation proud. Disclaimer: If you want to watch a film about a female wrestler's hardships and rise to the top, perhaps Aamir Khan and UTV's Dangal will meet your expectations. Sultan is all about Salman, 50, giving it his all - physically and emotionally.
To win Aarfa's heart and gain her respect - a few minutes before she has slammed him for being a joker and lacking a purpose in life - Sultan decides to become a wrestler. It takes the thirty-something Sultan three months and a week of training to become a state champion. Because, Sultan Ali Khan aka Bhai can. Having proved himself as a wrestler, Aarfa immediately marries Sultan and in the next 10 minutes we see them having won top prize at the Commonwealth Games and Asian Games. But when it comes to the biggest of them all, London Olympics in 2012, Aarfa is a no-show. Ali Abbas Zafar, who has written the story, screenplay and dialogues, it seems has decided that Dangal can talk about feminism, for there is no consideration given whatsoever to observe how the pivotal turning point affects Aarfa who here has to make the ultimate sacrifice.

But let's not deviate from topic for this film is all about Sultan, who is now an Olympic gold medallist. But with great success there is a fear of greater arrogance. Soon Sultan is far away from his glory days - he is now a lonesome, unhappy, dishevelled and out-of-shape government servant collecting funds from locals. Enter Amit Sadh, who ropes in Randeep Hooda as the disparaging trainer who gets Sultan back in shape. This time Sultan takes a month and a half to beat the MMA practitioners. In Bhai we believe.
Sultan is ultimately a tropes-laden affair, with unnecessary songs and plot contrivances. It does have its occasional charm courtesy a nice supporting turn by Anant Sharma as hero ka friend who provides the laughs and then suddenly in second half becomes Sultan's ringside aid. But what keeps the 170-minute sports drama from being a borefest is but of course Salman Khan. It's easy to see that Zafar has written Sultan keeping Salman in mind. Every time adversity has knocked on Salman's doors, he has found a way around it. Just when you think he is down and out with yet another controversy, he bounces back. Like Salman, Sultan is flamboyant, possesses pride and a devil-may-care attitude, and more so a hunger to succeed. Sultan is another addition to Salman's recent filmography in which he plays a not-so-perfect hero who seeks admiration and respect through his good deeds. In this case, he also seeks atonement for his sins and bad behaviour and takes quite a beating for it. He runs, jumps, tumbles, gets punched, broken, bruised and hurled around, he bleeds, but he keeps going. There is vulnerability on display here and it is not just showing your fully waxed legs in tiny black briefs.

India Relying on Spin to Win vs West Indies

Indian spinners picked up 12 wickets in the last warm-up match ahead of the four-match Test series vs West Indies. Will the hosts give the Indians spin advantage in their backyard?

The condition in St Kitts was hot and humid, just like home. And the wickets offered slow turn and bounce, which made India's spin trio to dream of rewards. And so their effort yielded 12 wickets (for spinners) in the 3-day warm up game. R Ashwin got three in each innings. The bowlers are intrigued by what could be on offer for them in the first Test in Antigua.

Ravindra Jadeja, who finished with figures of 4/58, says, "(It) feels good to be back in Test mode. It is important to be fit and have the stamina to bowl 15-20 overs a day. I did not experiment much during the warm-up tie. There was slow turn and bounce available (in St. Kitts). I tried bowling the right line and was getting help from the wicket too."

Jadeja, with Ashwin and Mishra, will be expected to power India's bowling. They have not just extracted juice from the wicket but have also dug into Anil Kumble's experiences. They believe that'll make a huge difference to the bowling group.

Jadeja says, "He (Anil Kumble) can tell us about his experiences. He has been a great bowler for India because he has done very well both in Tests and ODIs. When we speak to him in the dressing room, he tells us about his experiences. Even Ashwin gives me tips. But it is a big thing for us to have someone like Anil Kumble in the dressing room."

However, on the field, their preparations will count. So far the spinners have lived up to the expectations of the team, picking 12 of the 16 wickets in the last practice game. However the fast bowlers are yet to prove their mettle on the flat tracks of West Indies.

Yet they enjoy the support of the team-mates, "If there is turn and bounce, we have Mishra, Jadeja and Ashwin. They have been in good form in Tests of late. We shall be happy to get turning wickets but we have the firepower in our fast bowling as well. All of them are doing well. They have increased their pace and fitness levels," says KL Rahul.

Taking 20 wickets will be the key to winning the series in the Caribbean. And this new Indian Team under Virat Kohli wants to prove that they aren't just tough competitors at home but equally potent in foreign conditions too.

Appointing Anil Kumble as India Coach a Great Move by BCCI: Courtney Walsh

Basseterre: Former West Indies captain Courtney Walsh hailed the BCCI decision of appointing Anil Kumble as the chief coach terming the leg-spinner as someone who has "his heart in right place".

"I think it is a very good move. He is a very well respected person, and someone who is involved with the ICC as well," Walsh, who has 519 Test and 227 ODI wickets said. Walsh, who is also a national selector, was present in St Kitts to watch the warm-up games and was seen enjoying dinner with the Indian coach.

"He (Kumble) has always wanted to contribute and give something back to cricket and his heart is in the right place. I am sure he will do everything in his power to ensure that Indian cricket stays at the top or even gets better," said Walsh.

Pema Khandu sworn in as Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister

Pema Khandu was today sworn in as the ninth Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh marking the culmination of fast-paced political developments in this north-eastern state.

Chowna Mein was sworn in as the Deputy Chief Minister. Son of late Chief Minister Dorjee Khandu, 37-year-old Pema, who became the youngest chief minister in the country, and Mein were administered the oath by Governor Tathagata Roy at the Rajbhavan in Itanagar.

Hours ahead of the scheduled floor test in the Assembly yesterday which Chief Minister Nabam Tuki was directed by the governor to take, the Congress Legislature Party had elected Pema Khandu, in place of Tuki, who was restored to the Chief Minister's post earlier this week after the apex court verdict.

Pema then staked claim to power on the basis of the support of 45 party MLAs along with two independents. In a volte-face, ousted chief minister Khaliko Pul, also returned to the party fold with 30 dissident MLAs.

In the 60-member House with an effective strength of 58, Congress now claims the support of 47 MLAs, including two independents.
