Drag is Euphoric. I feel seen and comfortable in my own skin in a way that my every day life just doesn't allow. I am misgendered less. I am more embraced. I feel gutted when I have to take off make up or change.

I do drag because I can feel my soul expand outwards into the fullness of myself when I am seen. I do drag because making art in community is the purpose of my life. I do drag because I get so excited thinking about it that I can't fall asleep sometimes. My drag is a brush stroke in a mural of incredible q***r artists. I am so lucky to be a part of such a beautiful thing.

I got into drag to rebuild my confidence after a bad relationship. I was looking for something when I first came out and drag saved my life. I was never confident in myself until I found and developed my drag persona. drag became my go to coping skill when life got rough. Becoming the Churchlady gave me purpose. Predominantly a family friendly gospel queen fused my two loves. Faith and people. I get to share my story with everyone who sees a churchlady number and I show that Gods love is inclusive. Even now after almost 13 years I still find myself amazed at the power of this art form.

I do drag because it gives me the chance to be complete and be seen in the entirety of my multilevel q***r identity. I've always heard about drag queens, but didn't hear about drag kings until I was 15, and I immediately knew I wanted to do that. Around that time was when I also began feeling gender dysphoria and questioning my identity. I didn't have many people to process this new idea with and had to carry to burden mostly alone. The idea of being who ever I wanted to be despite the gender binary was so beautiful and alluring, but no matter how many hours and days I put into searching I couldn't find any minor friendly venue's. This process of dreaming of being a king and scouring the internet for venues (and finding nothing) repeated itself several time over the years until I finally turned 21. By now I've furthered my education, found a word that describes who I am, and have come to terms with my identity. I am nonbinary.

I don't fully identity with being trans masc despite dressing and presenting primarily masc. I see the relation between gender identity and gender expression as a recipe: I happened to be born with a lot of sugar, and I can't remove an ingredient that's already in the bowl. So, to balance it out, I add more salt. Being a king allows me to experience a for of expression and perception that society has always locked away from me. It allows me to bring that balance into my life and be the nonbinary being I've always been. It allows me to tell stories and spread messages and explore different aspects of myself I've been discouraged from exploring. I do drag because I needed it when I was a kid and I know other people need it now.

I do drag to express the things that matter to me. I'm very passionate about social justice, and I love to perform, so drag has become my outlet for activism. In my drag, I value defying gender norms, and making my trans body very visible. Visibility is important for acceptance and normalization. Storytelling is also important to me. I want you to feel something when I perform. Whether that's sadness, joy, or even discomfort, my goal is to impact my audiences, to make them think, and maybe even see things a little differently. I'm grateful to have my own monthly show now, where I have a space to inspire action and change regularly. Drag has transformed my life in that it has brought me so much joy that I previously didn't see for myself.
