Allegheny County, PA
A widespread fungi, often found in late winter/early spring in moist, shady areas. It grows on decaying wood(often Hazel, Elm, Willow) alongside mosses or under a layer of fallen leaves, sometimes you’ll catch just the slightest glimpse of red poking out from under a bed a leaves. Although they are edible, they are also an early spring resource both plants and animals, so consider enjoying a pleasant visit with them, then leaving as found.
