What I’m about to say takes balls...
Maybe I use that joke too much. But when you’re a girl who has balls, joking about it helps make your body feel like less of a joke. Today is Intersex Awareness Day. I’m intersex. I have XY chromosomes and internal te**es. But also a va**na. And breasts. They’re not “fully-developed,” as one of my doctors so lovingly pointed out once. To her resident. As she was touching them. My breasts, I mean. “They’re Tanner Stage 4. See how they don’t fully curve? Look!” At this point they bend down, eye-level to my chest. I’m flat on the exam table. The resident gets excited as she notices this “incredible phenomenon.”..
Now, when other people touch my breasts in a way that I should enjoy…I think about this moment...
Intersex people exist. We’re here. And we all have stories like this. Worse, even. Way worse. I dont share mine often, but there's plenty more. Instead I try to stay positive, make jokes about it. Bring humor and light to a situation that is shrouded in so much darkness. But it’s not easy. The darkness has caught up to me a lot, and I’ve been quiet on social media lately because the darkness of all of this caught up to me again. So right now I’m just focusing on existing...
Some days, the only thing I can do is exist. Talking about this every day, thinking about it, reliving it, hearing the stories of intersex people going through this same s**t all over the world...it’s draining. Some days I can barely get out of bed. But I can exist...
Today I challenge you to learn more about what it’s like to exist in a world that actively tries to remove your existence. Head to interACT and meet some of the other incredible intersex people I work with everyday. Hear our stories. Share them. Protest in Chicago with Pidgeon. Intersex Awareness Day started because on this day in 1996 there was a protest of intersex surgery in Boston. 21 years later we’re still protesting. Our bodies are still being mutilated. Our minds are still being traumatized. But we’re going to keep fighting. One day this will stop, and we can simply exist without being harmed. The doctors just need the balls to leave us alone.
