Ansett Boeing 737 Introduction.

The deliveries of the Advanced Boeing 737-200 100-seat passenger jets will begin in June 1981. They will replace the Douglas DC-9 aircraft, which will be retired.

Ansett Airlines Manager of Flight Operations, Captain Alan James, said 210 pilots will be trained over 15 months to fly new advanced Boeing 737-200 aircraft.

Ansett's Manager of Flying Standards, Captain Mal Wheaton, and its Flight Captain Boeing 737 aircraft, Captain Ted Walters, have just been endorsed on the Boeing 737 after flying with Air Nauru.

They will compile flight operation manuals and study guides and establish training procedures for Ansett. Captains Wheaton and Walters spent six weeks in New Zealand on a technical and Boeing 737 flight simulation course.

With Air New Zealand's Boeing 737 simulator, they operated in normal, abnormal and emergency conditions. Then they completed flight endorsement on the actual aircraft.

Captain James said that Ansett Airlines will have a Boeing 737-200 flight simulator in operation in July 1982. Until then, Ansett Pilots will do their technical training in Australia and gain simulator and flight endorsement in New Zealand. They will then do further training flights in Australia.

I was asked to get some night time shots for an event at Shellharbour Airport recently. The best part was having access to a few of the amazing aircraft down there.

HARS Aviation Museum’s Lockheed P-3C Orion (VH-ORI) sitting on display outside the Shellharbour Airport terminal.

This aircraft was previously registered A9-753 and operated for the Royal Australian Air Force with No. 10 Squadron & a part of No. 92 Wing Surveillance and Response Group as a maritime surveillance and anti-submarine warfare aircraft.

I believe this is the only civilian operated, warbird Orion in the world.

6 May 1940, Qantas Empire Airways flying boat 'Coogee' pictured in the foreground as 'Aotearoa' comes in for a landing at Rose Bay Water Airport.

ROSE BAY WATER AIRPORT
In January 1937 Australia agreed to participate in the Empire Air Mail Scheme (EAMS). EAMS was a project developed by Sir Eric Geddes, chairman of Imperial Airways to move all mail within the British Empire by air.

That year, despite some local community opposition, it was decided that Rose Bay would become the terminus of the United Kingdom to Australia airmail route and Australia's first international airport for flying boats. The only alternative location considered was Botany Bay but a large breakwater would need to have been built. This would have cost £600,000 and taken three years to complete, and so it was ruled out.

A base was built at Rose Bay that included a large hangar on land, with slipways and terminal facilities for the boats and passengers. The building of the hangar was not without incident: a rigger, William Hayes, died when a steel truss fell and crushed his head.

Six Short S23 'C' Class Empire flying boats were produced for Australia by Short Brothers at the Rochester Seaplane works in the UK. These boats were named: Coolangatta, Cooee, Carpentaria, Corio, Coogee and Coorong.

This made it Australia's first international airport. In 1942, due to the outbreak of World War II, commercial flights were suspended.

Ansett Airways commenced operating services to Lord Howe Island in 1953. After the arrival of passenger jetliners in the 1950s, a gradual demise in flying boats began. In 1955, Qantas discontinued its flying boat service. Ansett continued to operate flying boat services to Lord Howe Island until 1974 when the island's land airport opened.

"Wallaby Airlines"

Up next from my coverage of the Newcastle/RAAF Williamtown airshow is the Alenia C-27J Spartan A34-002 operated by No.35 Squadron based out of RAAF Amberely, Queensland.

I don't all too often get the opportunity to photograph the spartan down this way so to photograph her in some great conditions was pretty neat. Watching her conduct the flare drop up the Nobby's strip and then some instantly became one of the many highlights of the day for me to boot.

IN MEMORY - STEPHEN GALE
In memory of Warbird pilot, former RAAF member, and businessman Stephen Gale who is unfortunately the subject of a recovery mission in Port Phillip Bay, Victoria, after an aviation incident on 19 November 2023.

Stephen served time with the RAAF as an electronics and avionics engineer working on the flight control systems airworthiness of the F111C, B707, and C130 Hercules aircraft. Later in his life he went on to purchase ex military S.211 Marchetti jet trainers and developed a warbird following, a small business operating the jets and also took part in performing at events and airshows across Australia. In the last few years, he was seen in documentaries/videos training members of the public on how to fly aircraft.

I was lucky to meet Stephen over the years from 2013 at assorted aviation events around NSW and Victoria. My photos as seen below captured his passion for aviation, his aerobatic skills, his zest for life and his enjoyment of developing his aviation business. He was always welcoming, friendly, and supportive.
The 2nd last photo is my last photo of him in flight back in August 2023 at the Pacific Airshow on the Gold Coast.

The DUAN team offers our condolences to Stephen's family and friends and to the passenger's family and friends.

OPERATION BLOW DOWN IN FNQ
In the 1960s in Far North Queensland, the Australian Govt undertook a massive conventional weapon test to see what a 50ton device to simulate a nuclear explosion would do to jungle rainforests to test how military operations would be effected. Australian Army helicopters were used to support this operation alongside a range of US military aircraft and helicopters.

This film documents 1963's Operation Blowdown, an incredible test undertaken by Australia to determine what the effects of a nuclear detonation would be in a...

Hypnotizing Power

One of the two fast jet demo's that were present on Saturday were none other then the F-35A Lightning from No.77 Squadron based out of RAAF Williamtown with Bunga at the controls.

While this was not the first time I have had the opportunity to photograph Bunga around the Hunter it was pretty special to see him rip it up in front of a stacked home crowd.

RAAF BASE WILLIAMTOWN - OPEN DAY 2023
Held at RAAF base Williamtown, NSW on 19 November 2023, was an open day event for the general public with up to 20,000 able to attend.

An extensive range of the Royal Australian Air Force assets were on show but noted missing were a C-130 and C-17, both types are understood to be busy at the moment due to operational taskings.

The fast jets to transports to helicopters ensured there was a wide range of assets for the public to see up close and marvel at. The cargo transports had as usual long lines to check out the interiors. A welcomed appearance of 1 of the 2 last operational AP-3C Orions warmed many aviation enthusiasts' hearts. Warbirds from 100 SQN also were on display.

DUAN had extensive talks with many of the units on display and learned a range of different personal aspects as to what encourages personnel to volunteer and join the RAAF, some of the skillsets needed and duties/functions they may do as part of their job and the places they can go to on their postings around Australia or globally when deployed.

There was a focus on motivating potential new aviation candidates at the event, with many simulators busily being utilised all day long. Careers and job support were kept busy across the day it was noted.

DUAN met a few familiar faces across the day while recording the event.

DUAN would like to thank the RAAF, the Airshow team, and members of 464 SQN for the media access and their support today. A special thanks also to those who know, for the rare opportunity given today.

DUAN looks forward to the next Open base day event.

The Venerable Orion.

A real highlight for me this airshow was to finally get an extended opportunity to photograph one of the two remaining AP-3C (ELINT) Orions in RAAF service, operated by No.10 Squadron out of RAAF Edinburgh.

It was great to see the Orion A97-657 strut its stuff for what is possibly one of the very last times to the public as it is slotted for retirement this year, hearing those smokey Allison T56's sure put a smile on my face as she beat up Nobby's beach throughout the day.
