NEWCASTLE AIRSHOW 2023
Today DUANs Phil attended the Newcastle Airshow held on the coast and river area of eastern Newcastle.
Some unique airshow aspects it is understood were observed for the first time.
We couldn't estimate well the crowd but we will say potentially maybe 30,000-100,000.
We thank the RAAF personnel for their time in operating the aircraft.
More to come.....in a detailed review.

Seems the Chinese are watching Aussie War Games closely. This appeared on the China State run broadcaster CCTV as a national news item on. Sunday. The headline reads Osprey V-22 crashes near Darwin with 20 marines onboard. While nothing derogatory was said in the news broadcast, they did show video footage of what appears to be the 2017 Osprey crash onto the amphibious transport dock USS Green Bay near Rockhampton where 3 Marines also lost their lives.

Looking at the geography this could easily have been a clip shot anywhere in Outback Australia. Fortunately no, it's somewhere remote in South Africa.
Must have come within a few millimetres of dragging the tail in the dirt.
RANGE EXTENDED BY FORCE MULTIPLIERS
Air to air refueling tankers since the early 1950s have enabled the extension of air power in many ways like to reach out and travel long distances, enable aircraft to remain on station longer over a target or task area and to assist in the rapid deployment at short notice of task groups or units to the other parts of the world as needed.
An example of partnering nations and global integration undertaken at Pitch Black is the ability for the RAAF to refuel other friendly allied nations jets in the air.
Here we see a RAF Typhoon fighter bomber being refueled over the N.T this week by a RAAF KC-30A MRTT.

RISING SUN F-2As - DOWN UNDER PB22
This year's visit of Japanese F-2As and their integration into the Pitch Black 2022 exercise is the first for the Japanese Air Self Defense Force.
This first visit to PB exercise took around 8months to prepare and sort out logistic needs for the training exercise.
The last time the Japanese military fighters came to Darwin was in WW2. Beginning in 1942, and continuing for the next few years, waves of Japanese fighters and bombers routinely attacked Darwin and the surrounding areas. These attacks caused considerable loss of life and infrastructure damage.
Times have changed since the days of WW2 and ongoing peace between Australia and Japan has seen common interests form and from this stronger business trading and military relationships evolve.
This close relationship enables another aspect of Pitch Black to happen, with the exercise bringing together assorted regional and global countries in flying day and night time integrated multi aircraft strike packages.
This PB22 visit has seen the JASDF send 6 of the colourful light and dark blue coloured Mitsubishi F-2A/B Viper Zero multi role fighters. The JASDF sent the aircraft from the Hyakuri based 3 Hikotai to Darwin.
These aircraft are here to fly and boost the pilots and ground crews skills, via training as they work along side the other friendly partner nations.
The F-2 was built by Mitsubishi and used the existing F-16 design as a reference base. Intriguingly more than 95% of F-16 engineering drawings were changed for the F-2.
The F-2 is also just slightly larger than a F-16. Some differences in the F-2 from the F-16A:
* a 25% larger wing area
* composite materials used to reduce overall weight and radar signature
* longer and wider nose to accommodate a J/APG-1/J/APG-2 active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar.The F-2 was the first operational military aircraft in the world to feature an AESA radar,
* larger tailplane
* larger air intake
* three-piece cockpit canopy

INTERNATIONAL TANKING DOWN UNDER - PB22
DUANs Phil today was on board a RAAF KC-30A tanker flight out of RAAF Base Tindal and saw more of international partnering elements of exercise Pitch Black 2022 at work.
The RAAF tanker refuelled a few sets of French Rafales and RAF Typhoons fighters.
Here is a video of a RAF Typhoon on the hose and drogue tanking method.
