For me, wild life photography is all about the colors. Landscapes, nature, animals and the light in Africa are so amazing that I always feel that I miss something when working in monochrome. On the other hand, when the subject is a zebra, it is ok to make an exception. And than again, when looking at this photo, I feel like doing this more often. What do you think?

Because of Covid and the travel restrictions, I wasn’t able to travel for a long time. But today I am grateful to be back in my beloved Africa. I spent a few days in the Ngrongoro Crater and it felt great to be back in this amazing nature. Ngorongoro is still my absolute favorite national park.

Today is International Chefs Day! 👨🏻‍🍳🥳

To be a great chef is all about passion, discipline and paying attention to details. A real cook is an artist!

On this special day we celebrate Axel Janssens, our flying chef in Tanzania.

In the book A Taste Of Tanzania he shares some of his recipes. These are often great classics of world cuisine, but mostly pimped with some African flair and other exotic touches.

In order of appearance:

Ratatouille du chef
Carrot cumin soup
Rack of lamb with Ngogwe & chocolate sauce
Baobab sorbet

Bon appetit!

The Serengeti: beauty as far as the eye can see, serenity central. That was our first impression when we entered these iconic grounds. Upon our arrival, the sky was a deep ink-blue full of clouds waiting to burst. In sharp contrast, in 50 shades of beige, the plains were gasping for water. This immense national park is named after the Maasai word “serengit,” which means: the land of endless plains. They truly captured the essence of this wonderful place.

Big cat, wild cat 🐆

We were over the moon when we saw this leopard. This was partly because although they're rather large and very well represented in numbers, their camouflage and nocturnal habits make this gorgeous big cat one of the hardest animals to spot.

Ode to the pride

Lions are the only big cats to live in groups. The prides are close family groups where everybody works together to defend territory and hunt.
The typical pride consists of ten to fifteen lions, with several adult females, their cubs and up to four males, better known as male lion coalitions. Some lion prides can be as large as 40 members!

Lionesses do the majority of the hunting. Lions, on the other hand, have the well-known reputation of just "lion" around in the shade. But we can't underestimate their role. A male lion's entire reason for existing is rather simple and comes down to:
Reproduce, defend their territory against pride takeovers and protect their offspring.

Hadza country

After crossing the Kidero Mountains, we reached this special destination: Yaeda Valley, the land of the world's last hunter-gatherers. They are living unchanged, just as their predecessors have for thousands of years.
We joined a group of Hadzabe men on their hunting trip. No rifle needed, they use bows and arrows. The expedition ended in zero kills. This is no supermarket where you pick your dinner from a rack. It is a rough and difficult existence. We could only have the most sincere and deep respect for the Hadzabe way of life.

Tarangire National Park is where significant numbers of elephants roam the lands. Surrounded by towering mountains and rolling hills in the distance, they walk the vast plains and stroll between the behemoth baobabs. This is the perfect, most beautiful place to observe those tender and very cunning creatures. If you don’t see them here, there probably aren’t any left.

Acacia trees? Check. Gorgeous sunset? Check. You might think that a sunset is pretty cliché. Until you see one illuminating the Tanzanian savannah, covering it in a warm, orange blanket for the night.

Dreamy orange light 🧡 Natron

One of my favorite places in Tanzania is Lake Natron. I really love the morning light over there. it's a beautiful backdrop to photograph flamingos having their breakfast. My Leica SL in combination with the Leica Apo-Vario-Elmarit-SL 90-280 were my perfect companions to witness these birds in their natural habitat.

In the weekly report on the latest in global travel news by Peter Greenberg, we were chosen as the winner of the photo contest! We feel so proud! Thanks a lot!

Minutes of fame starting at 14:41

The mountain of God (Ol Doinyo Lengai at Lake Natron) is an image from our book "A Taste of Tanzania".

Photographer: Wim Demessemaekers
Text: Stephen Walckiers

"When we arrived at Lake Natron, we might as well have landed in another dimension. We felt overwhelmed by this eerily beautiful, lunar-like landscape spotted with craters, cracking surfaces and hissing hot springs.

For a moment we considered diving in to find some relief from the incessant heat, but it turns out the lake's waters are highly acidic and extremely hot, so we immediately filed it under "bad idea."

Towering over Lake Natron is the Ol Doinyo Lengai volcano. For the Maasai, it is a sacred mountain and the residence for their god, Engai. For a photographer, the ideal setting to capture the divinity of this magical place."

Even though just like the rest of you, we’re gradually climbing the walls and developing cabin fever stuck inside all the time, we do have excellent news! The one and only Columbus Travel Magazine have a feature article about our book “A Taste of Tanzania” in their February issue. And that is ...

Dream now, travel later. 🌞

Heerlijk!
