According to Italian authorities, a large shipment of co***ne was discovered floating off the eastern coast of the island of Sicily.
Police recovered roughly 2 tons of co***ne spotted floating across the Mediterranean during a regular surveillance flight on Sunday, according to a statement made on Monday by Italy's Financial Police, Guardia di Finanza.
As per the police, the drugs were carefully sealed in 70 waterproof floating packages that were connected and contained a signaling light device. They further stated that the haul is worth €400 million (almost $440 million).
According to the Guardia di Finanza, the floating packages were dropped by a passing cargo ship to be retrieved and brought ashore by traffickers.
To ensure the safety of the officers involved in the operation, the financial police claimed they sent boats from the Sicilian municipality of Catania and provided air cover from several units. They also stated that they are still searching the area for any further floating packets.

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) will loan Bangladesh $230 million to aid in the rehabilitation and reconstruction efforts in north-eastern Bangladesh, which was devastated by floods in May and June 2022.
On Monday, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the government of Bangladesh signed an agreement for that purpose.
According to an ADB press release, record rainfall in northeastern Bangladesh in May–June 2022 caused major floods, particularly in the low-lying Haor region, affecting 7.2 million people.
The Flood Reconstruction Emergency Assistance Programme intends to assist in the reconstruction, resilience, and economic recovery of the northeastern districts of Brahmanbaria, Habiganj, Kishoreganj, Moulvibazar, Mymensingh, Netrokona, Sherpur, Sunamganj, and Sylhet.

A committee of Rajshahi division asked health officials of eight districts to advise people to stay indoors between 10:00am and 4:00pm, drink plenty of fluids, and shop after dark to deal with the heatwave.
The directions came during the divisional development coordination committee's meeting held at the Rajshahi divisional commissioner's conference room in the morning, reports our Rajshahi correspondent.
Deputy commissioners, health officials, and officials of other departments concerned from the eight districts of Rajshahi division attended the meeting.
Talking to The Daily Star, Divisional Commissioner GSM Jafarullah said that they decided in the meeting to advise people to stay indoors between 10:00am and 4:00pm.
"If going outdoor is necessary, people are advised to stay hydrated and find shades," he said.
The meeting also decided to ask the fire service and civil defense to stay on high alert and well-prepared to tackle any fire incidents.
Authorities of different markets were asked to keep firefighting equipment handy.
Rajshahi's Civil Surgeon Abu Sayeed Mohammad Faruk said they have already started asking people to shower multiple times a day if necessary and avoid tea and coffee that increases body heat.

Bangladesh has agreed to pay Russia almost $300 million in yuan currency to settle payment for constructing a nuclear power plant near Dhaka, according to two officials familiar with the matter.
The country is building the first of two nuclear power stations in cooperation with Russia's state-owned atomic business Rosatom in a $12.65 billion project that is partially financed by a Russian loan repayable in 28 years with a 10-year grace period.
As per the officials, Russia originally refused to accept the payment in yuan due to concerns about potential currency conversion losses and insisted on payments in ruble.
The project will help reduce frequent power outages, which analysts predict will worsen this year as Bangladesh's ability to import fuels has been hampered by a fast decrease in the value of its currency and foreign exchange reserves.

📲 According to the New York Times (NYT), Google is working on a new project called 'Magi' after learning that smartphone manufacturer Samsung is considering replacing Google search with Microsoft Bing as the default search engine on its handsets.
👉 The report said this caused “panic” at Google as it may lead to a $3 billion hit to its revenue.

Yesterday, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina encouraged Iranian President Dr. Seyyed Ebrahim Raisi to take steps to ensure that Iranian women can live with dignity and honor with equal opportunity for education and work with their male counterparts.
When the President of the Islamic Republic of Iran contacted her on Monday afternoon, she made this call.
According to PM Hasina, Bangladesh voted against a UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) resolution to remove Iran from the Commission on the Status of Women.
During the 22-minute teleconference, she recounted how Bangladesh and Iran, as members of the OIC and the D-8, had often been supportive of one another.
The Prime Minister emphasized Bangladesh's willingness to help Iran on multilateral platforms, particularly the United Nations.

Impact of terrorism on Bangladesh has been reported to be low by the 10th edition of the Global Terrorism Index (GTI) 2023 report.
GTI provides an extensive summary of the key global trends and patterns in terrorism over the last decade.
Bangladesh dropped two places to 43rd among 163 countries in the latest report, with Afghanistan on top of the list as the country with the highest impact of terrorism.
Bangladesh ranked in the low range of the terrorism scale, which rates the impact of terrorism in each nation on a scale of zero to 10, where zero represents no impact of terrorism and 10 represents the highest measurable impact.

🙍♀️ Nujhat Ahmed Disha, a student from Viqarunnisa Noon School & College who will take her HSC in 2024, won the silver medal by fully solving five out of six problems.
👉 Afsana Akter of Holy Cross College, Arifa Alam of St. Francis Xavier's Girls' School & College, and Saniva Rakib Soha of Monipur High School And College are the bronze medalists. Afsana Akhter partially solved four of the six problems, while Arifa Alam and Saniva Rakib Soha fully solved two and partially solved one.

Eid-ul-Fitr, marking the end of the holy month of Ramadan, could fall on Saturday, April 22, 2023, according to the International Astronomy Centre.
The exact date will only be confirmed based on the moon sighting, with countries across the Islamic world set to investigate the crescent of the month of Shawwal on Thursday, April 20.
The International Astronomy Centre said in a Twitter post that sighting the crescent on Thursday is nearly impossible with the naked eye or a telescope in most Arab and Islamic countries, except in parts of West Africa.
Specific conditions, such as an accurate telescope, a professional observer, and exceptional weather, are required for the sighting to be possible.
Based on this principle, the centre predicts Eid-ul-Fitr to fall on Saturday, April 22. The centre also clarified that these predictions are based on "astronomical information" and that criteria for the beginning of the month vary across the Islamic world.
The GCC countries, including the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Oman, and Kuwait, have already announced Eid-ul-Fitr holidays for public and private sectors. The UAE and Saudi Arabia have declared a four-day weekend, while Qatar has announced an 11-day holiday. Oman and Kuwait will observe a five-day weekend.
The Supreme Court of Saudi Arabia has called on Muslims to sight the Shawwal crescent on Thursday evening, April 20, and report any sightings to the nearest court or contact centre.

After almost two weeks of severe heatwave, it finally rained in different upazilas of Sylhet.
It began to rain in Companiganj upazila at 8:50 p.m. last night. Later, around 10:00 p.m., a hailstorm hit the area.
Many residents also reported that rain fell in Zakiganj, Beanibazar, and Jaintiapur upazilas at the same time.
Besides, stormy and cold winds were also blowing across Sylhet city and its surroundings. Earlier in the evening, the Meteorological Department in Sylhet issued a bulletin predicting the possibility of rain at night.

🚀 IUB alumnus Md. Wahidul Hasan, a Ph.D. candidate and research assistant at the South Dakota Mines in the United States, and his team have won a prestigious NASA EPSCoR grant worth $750,000 to fund research into the next generation of lithium-sulfur batteries for use in space technology.
🔋 The grant results from an innovation that used corn stalk residues to stabilize battery chemistry and almost double the charging capacity of existing technology.
🧑🔬 Wahid, who earned a BA in 2013 and an MSc in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from IUB and also taught Computer Science and Engineering at the university, specializes in solid-state lithium-sulfur battery and electrochemical energy storage.
👉 According to a NASA press release issued last month, the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology will work to develop a new lithium-sulfur battery technology that will outperform current lithium-ion batteries. Increasing battery power capacity and life could help NASA in powering rockets, spacecraft, and habitats on the Moon and, eventually, Mars.

💰 This program provides a monthly living allowance to people aged 9 to 24 who are experiencing extreme social withdrawal. It also includes funds for teenagers to participate in cultural activities.
👉 Other types of support include paying for the correction of affected people's physical appearance, such as scars "that adolescents may feel ashamed of," as well as assistance with school and gym supplies.

In the first two weeks of April, Bangladesh received $958 million in remittances as Bangladeshis working abroad sent extra money to households ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr.
According to data from the Bangladesh Bank, $134 million was transferred through six state-owned banks in the first 14 days of April.
Aside from that, $26 million was provided by the specialized Bangladesh Agricultural Bank.
In addition, $794 million came from private sector banks, while $3 million came from foreign commercial banks.

The weather department has predicted rain or thundershowers in a few locations across the divisions of Barishal, Chattogram, and Sylhet.
According to the Met Office forecast for the next 24 hours beginning at 9:00 a.m. today, the weather may remain dry with partly cloudy skies over the country.
Meanwhile, a severe heat wave is affecting the Khulna division as well as the districts of Dhaka, Faridpur, Gopalganj, Manikganj, Narayanganj, Rajshahi, and Pabna.
A mild to moderate heatwave is sweeping the rest of the country and is expected to last, according to the Met Office bulletin.

At least eleven people died on Sunday after suffering from sunstroke at an event attended by India's home minister on the outskirts of Mumbai, the chief minister of Maharashtra state said.
Hundreds of thousands of people attended an award function on Sunday afternoon where federal home minister Amit Shah presented an award to a well-known social activist, on the outskirts of the country's financial capital of Mumbai in Maharashtra.
The event was held outdoors in the afternoon in Khargar, where the maximum temperature recorded was 38 degrees Celsius (100.4°F), normal for this time of the year.
Around 50 people were admitted to hospital after the event and 11 had died, Maharashtra's chief minister, Eknath Shinde, told reporters late on Sunday night.
India is likely to experience heat waves between March and May, the weather office said in February this year.

আজ সোমবার দুপুরে আবহাওয়াবিদ মো. ওমর ফারুক দ্য ডেইলি স্টারকে বলেন, 'আজ ৩টি বিভাগের দু'এক জায়গায় আমরা বজ্রসহ বৃষ্টির সম্ভাবনা দেখছি। বৃষ্টি হলে ঢাকার তাপমাত্রা ১ ডিগ্রি সেলসিয়াস কমে আসতে পারে। এছাড়া, এখন রোজই তাপমাত্রা কমতে থাকবে।'
অধিদপ্তর জানিয়েছে, খুলনা বিভাগ এবং ঢাকা, ফরিদপুর, গোপালগঞ্জ, মানিকগঞ্জ, নারায়ণগঞ্জ, রাজশাহী ও পাবনা জেলার ওপর দিয়ে তীব্র তাপপ্রবাহ বয়ে যাচ্ছে। দেশের অন্যান্য জায়গায় মৃদু থেকে মাঝারী ধরনের তাপপ্রবাহ বয়ে যাচ্ছে।
উল্লেখ্য, ৩৬ থেকে ৩৭ দশমিক ৯ ডিগ্রি সেলসিয়াস তাপমাত্রাকে মৃদু, ৩৮ ডিগ্রি থেকে ৩৯ দশমিক ৯ ডিগ্রি সেলসিয়াস মাঝারী, ৪০ থেকে ৪১ দশমিক ৯ ডিগ্রি সেলসিয়াস তীব্র ও ৪২ ডিগ্রি সেলসিয়াসের উপরে অতি তীব্র তাপপ্রবাহ বিবেচনা করা হয়।
সিনপটিক অবস্থায় দেখা যাচ্ছে, লঘুচাপের বর্ধিতাংশ পশ্চিমবঙ্গ ও এর আশেপাশের এলাকায় অবস্থান করছে। মৌসুমের স্বাভাবিক লঘুচাপ দক্ষিণ বঙ্গোপসাগরে অবস্থান করছে।
এর প্রভাবে দেশের আকাশ অস্থায়ীভাবে মেঘলা থাকতে পারে। এছাড়া সারা দেশে আবহাওয়া মূলত শুষ্ক থাকতে পারে বলে জানিয়েছে আবহাওয়া অধিদপ্তর।

বঙ্গবন্ধু শেখ মুজিব মেডিকেল বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের (বিএসএমএমইউ) জনস্বাস্থ্য ও তথ্যবিজ্ঞান বিভাগের সহযোগী অধ্যাপক মো. খালেকুজ্জামান দ্য ডেইলি স্টারকে বলেন, 'চিকিৎসা না নিলে হিট স্ট্রোকও ব্রেন স্ট্রোকের মতোই মারাত্মক হতে পারে। বয়স্ক ও শিশুরা সবচেয়ে বেশি ঝুঁকিতে আছে।'
এই অধ্যাপকের ভাষ্য, বাইরে তাপমাত্রা যাই হোক না কেন আমাদের শরীর স্বয়ংক্রিয়ভাবে তাপমাত্রা প্রায় স্থির রাখতে সক্ষম। কিন্তু অতিরিক্ত গরমে শরীরের তাপমাত্রা নিয়ন্ত্রণ ব্যবস্থা কাজ করা বন্ধ করে দিলে তখন তাকে হিট স্ট্রোক বলা হয়। এর ফলে ঘাম বন্ধ হয়ে গিয়ে শরীরের তাপমাত্রা দ্রুত বাড়তে শুরু করে।
'যারা রোজা রাখেন, তারা দিনের বেলায় পানি পান না করায় ডিহাইড্রেশনে ভুগতে পারেন। সাধারণত তারাই হিট স্ট্রোকের ঝুঁকিতে বেশি থাকেন।'
সেজন্য ইফতার ও সেহরিতে পর্যাপ্ত পরিমাণ পানি পান এবং তরমুজের মতো ফল খাওয়ার পরামর্শ দেন অধ্যাপক মো. খালেকুজ্জামান।
তিনি আরও বলেন, 'তবে ডায়রিয়াজনিত রোগ এড়াতে পানি বা জুস স্বাস্থ্যকর ও নিরাপদ হওয়াও অত্যন্ত গুরুত্বপূর্ণ।'
চলমান দাবদাহ থেকে রক্ষায় বিশ্ব স্বাস্থ্য সংস্থাও (ডব্লিউএইচও) কিছু পরামর্শ দিয়েছে।
এই সমেয় কেউ যদি মাথা ঘোরা, দুর্বল, অস্থির বা তীব্র তৃষ্ণা ও মাথাব্যথা অনুভব করে, তাহলে যত দ্রুত সম্ভব তার ঠান্ডা জায়গায় চলে যাওয়া এবং তারপরে শরীরের তাপমাত্রা পরিমাপ করা উচিত।
এই ধরনের আবহাওয়ায় হাইড্রেটেড থাকার জন্য পানি বা জুস পান করার পরামর্শও দিয়েছে ডব্লিউএইচও।
