LG polls: PDP still consulting on chairmanship candidate - Commissioner
By Etoro-obong Inyang
Ahead of the October local government elections in Akwa Ibom state, a prominent member of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, in the state has said that the party was yet to settle for a chairmanship candidate for Ibiono Ibom local government area.
Ini Ememobong,, who’s the commissioner for information said on Tuesday amidst high level politicking at the grassroots that members of the party and other stakeholders in Ibiono Ibom local government area were yet to reach a common ground in the choice of a chairmanship candidate as consultations were still ongoing.
IEmemobong, who’s widely believed to be the leader of the party in the area told The Edge News, in an interview that at the appropriate time, the party will adopt and come out with a position on the thorny issue.
Ememobong, who until his commissionership position was the publicity secretary of the party in the state maintained that his stance on zoning was sacrosanct and in tandem with the directive of the state governor and leader of the party in the state.
"we are yet to take a stand on that as consultations with stakeholders are ongoing and at the appropriate time, we will adopt and will come out with our position on zoning and who becomes the chairmanship candidate of the party", Ememobong, "it's not about me as a person, but, about the collective interest and good of the people of Ibiono Ibom, and that will be done soon, and until that's done, for now, there's no chairmanship PDP candidate, and everything will be done as directed by the governor who is the leader of the party".
He went on, "I believe in zoning, and that's been my position, and it's in line with the position of the governor."
Speaking on the reported bickering and tension in the area, the commissioner reasoned that the process of selecting who becomes the chairman of a local government council would ordinarily lead to disagreement, agreement, and tensed discussions.
"It is within their rights to hold political meetings and to hold divergent views, but, at end, there'll be a solution. Let them meet, let them consult, it's within their right to do so"
