Celebrating 9 years with my Chappie today!! So here's a video from yesterday; he killed a shrew and then immediately started rolling on it. 🤣 He might be 11 years old but he's still a fierce hunter! 😛

Yesterday was Imbolc, and the bees were out! 🐝 They were flying all around this wet area, landing occasionally to drink. Lots of thirsty girls out in the sun! Always a welcome sight but especially at this time of year.
So far, all 3 colonies are going strong. Let's hope it continues! 🤞 We haven't got to the really dangerous part of winter yet; when the growing sunlight hours trigger the queens to start laying, meaning the bees need to maintain a brood nest temp of around 94F, no matter how cold it is outside. This is usually the time of year that colony loss is highest.
In other news, I have a chicken in the house again. 🙄 My little silkie, Thistle, has some blood feathers coming in and the other hens are nipping them off and then pecking at the resulting blood. Sigh! So I brought her in to wash and treat the area. She is very suspicious of me so I'm going to use this time to try and tame her. Some scrambled egg a day usually buys their love!

One of my frizzle Easter Eggers, Dahlia, is broody! Thankfully, I'd already separated her and her sister, Petal, from the other pullets due to a wound on Petal that the other girls were pecking at. This means Dahlia has the space to make her nest without being disturbed. Her eggs are infertile since she has yet to meet my rooster so I put three English Orpington eggs under her and one of Ginger's (barnyard mix). We shall see what happens!

Package bees seem to be settling in well. 🤗 I had some comb break from the bar and it's been a real bugger trying to reattach it. Thankfully, the bees took over from my poor repair job and two frames have already been reattached! Since just Tuesday! They're busy bbs. 🐝❤️

From my recent time in Florida! My SIL is a volunteer with her local raptor rescue and was able to reunite this sandhill crane with his mate and offspring. ❤️ Sound on to hear the incredible dinosaur noises they make when they see each other! 🦖

Wtf, Ohio?? Going from Florida to this is extra hard. 😭

Honeybees on the bird feeder! I've heard about this but never seen it in person before. We had a surprisingly warm day yesterday and the girls were out looking for pollen. Nothing is in bloom, though, so they're attracted to other sources of trace minerals and nutrients. That's what they're after here. In fact, they were so eager yesterday that I couldn't go out without a few bees inspecting me! A neighbour called me over to make sure she didn't have a wild colony living in her yard because so many bees were flying around her when she went outside. Today is also warm but very windy so not as much activity out and about. I put some pollen substitute on the feeders when I opened the hives up to check on their food supply. 🐝 Both colonies seem to be doing well! I did not do a full inspection because more cold weather is on the way and I don't want to break the propolis seal between supers. Spring cannot get here soon enough!

Christmas day was surprisingly mild (55F) and rather rainy. Between the showers, my bees were out doing their cleansing flights. ❤️🐝❤️ I love seeing them during this time of year. It affirms they're still alive and gives me a little boost! I'll forever associate bees with spring and summer sunshine. 🌄

Beekeeping oopsie!! I merged two colonies because I was convinced one was queenless; they were grumpy, they sounded all wrong, and I couldn't find that big booty gal no matter how much I looked. It was warm enough to check on the merged colony today and the workers were united; they'd chewed through the newspaper and are working harmoniously together. I saw one queen and kept going through. Right at the end, I find these two queens locked in combat. 😱 Part of me is upset because I love queen bees and I'm sad one will die because of my decision BUT this merged colony is so much stronger than it was when I put them together just a few weeks ago. I probably would have had to choose a queen to cull anyway. This way, at least the strongest queen survives.
Sorry, ladies! ❤️

This week, our weather has warmed up into the 60s during the day. I'm busting ass trying to get the garden put to bed before the cold returns. But I always have time to just stand and watch my bees. 🐝 Seeing them fly in the sun like this continues to be magical. ❤️ It's one of the best parts of beekeeping.

On Hiatus until Spring 2022
Hi folks! I've decided to place the podcast on hiatus until next Spring. We're going full tilt through autumn and into winter now, and things will be slowing down around the homestead. Plus, I'm just completely burned out due to a number of different factors, and I need the time to reset.
I wanted to share some suggestions of episodes and podcasts that might be of interest to you! You can find those over on my website (with direct links to their homepages to make things easy to find).
Thanks for listening these last two years, and I wish you all a safe and happy winter season!
Happy first official day of Autumn! Lots of rain this afternoon. ❤️ Sound on for a moment of Zen! 🍂🌧️☔

Hive News & English Orpingtons
Happy September! Important announcement: I will be taking the rest of September off so there will be no new episodes (or reposts) until October. I'm taking a much needed break to reset. I hope you will bear with me!
This week, I discuss what things look like in my apiary, treating my top bar hive for mites using the oxalic acid dribble method, bringing home new chickens/pullets, and then share some facts about the supremely fluffy English Orpington chicken.
I do discuss some upsetting information related to my broody hen and chick death. This is covered from timestamp 20:57 until 30:26. Please jump ahead if you would prefer. Nature can be cruel but your mental health is important so feel free to just skip that bit.
As always, you can visit my website for a rundown of everything discussed, a link to sources referenced, and some photos. See you in October! Take care!
All Things Varroa Mite (re-post)
Hello from rainy Ohio!
This week, I am reposting one of my earliest episodes that covers all things Varroa Mite. I go over what this nasty little parasite is, how it transferred from the Asian honeybee (apis cerana) to our beloved European honeybee (apis mellifera), its method of transmission into the US; testing methods, and available treatments.
This topic is especially timely since those of us in the West are moving into Autumn, which is when varroa mite levels can start to climb. I hope this will act as a useful refresher on this nasty parasite for seasoned beekeepers, and a good introductory guide for first year beekeepers.
The original blog post for this episode can be found here.
The paper on oxalic acid effect on bee brood can be found here.
Thank you for listening!
Mini episode: broody hens & hive updates
Hello hello! I am back from my vacation and right back into the thick of things. I've been so busy catching up on everything at the homestead that I am bringing you just a mini episode this week. I'll be discussing broody hens (or what it means when a hen 'goes broody') as well as what is happening in my bee hives. Then I'll share some highlights from my vacation.
Visit my website for a rundown of everything discussed, as well as photos.
I'll be back in 2 weeks with a regular, full length episode. Thanks for listening!
Minor whoopsie: I left some old frames (with just a smidge of honey) in a non-airtight container and the hungry bees found them! This is the result. I thought it was beautiful. ❤️🐝❤️ I was able to calm things down with some Fischer's Bee Quick spray and a fume board, and recovered the frames when the bees left.
(Side note: Bee Quick smells like fake almonds and I hate it. 🤢 I had to leave the fume board outside because I couldn't bear to have it in the house! Does the trick, though.)

Vacation Ep: repost of Episode 1!
Hello from my vacation! For the first time since I started this podcast, I am taking time off. I didn't want to leave you hanging, though, so I thought now would be a good time to repost Episode 1: A Chicken in a Parking Lot. This is all about how I fell into chicken keeping (and homesteading) when I found a small, beakless hen in an ALDI parking lot. It's a pivotal moment in my life and a fun story to share. The sound quality of this first episode is poor and I apologize for that. I hope you will enjoy the story, regardless!
For those of you who have been listening since the beginning, may the bees never sting you and the honey flow strong and sweet!! You are the best.
Sound on! It rained all day yesterday and was so peaceful. 🌧️💧❤️

Relaxed Fit Episode!
Hello! This week, I'm taking time off from the book reviews and educational topics, and instead talking about everything that has been happening here on the homestead. Topics include: rehoming an aggressive rooster, bringing a new rooster home, vegetable garden progress, and hive news.
Please visit my website for photos of all things discussed.
