Tuatara

Sole survivors of a lineage of species that dates back to the Triassic period. Only found in certain areas of New Zealand, these lizards are super fascinating and conservation efforts are constantly being made to make sure they continue to live on.

Pīwakawaka aka a Fantail.

Another birb native to New Zealand. Very energetic and constantly moving, I felt like I was lucky to get a shot of this relatively small bird while it jumped around in the darker, shady areas. I didn’t quite capture the actual “fan tail” I would’ve liked, but still a fun capture of a really cool species!

Kererū aka a New Zealand Pigeon.

With a surprising plump to flying capabilities ratio, this colorful bird caught our attention while out hiking. It posed for a good amount of photos before flying off across a steep drop off, but that wasn’t before it was balancing and hopping around on the tiniest twigs trying to keep its balance. A silly time watching this bird and also thinking it was something extra exotic until I heard the classic cooing. Progressively a birder in training 😂

Nēnē, a Hawaiian goose.

Despite what most of us might think about geese, Nēnē are actually endangered and efforts are being made to protect this species throughout Hawaii. I did find it fascinating coming across a couple and get to see their beautiful neck patterns. And while I was a good distance away, it didn’t stop one from looking my direction and giving me a silly face. It was actually a yawn, but the image still gives me Canadian goose PTSD 😅 iykyk

Some cool finds while back in Hawaii at a “Black Sand” beach. In reality, it was a lava rock beach, would not recommend going barefoot or with sandals 😂 but maybe I’ve just got fragile feet.

On Jan. 31st at about 11pm near Queenstown, New Zealand, I happened to catch what will probably be a once in my lifetime shot. While doing my usual prep for taking astronomy photos, I happened to experience a meteoroid entering the earth’s atmosphere, become a huge fireball, and fly across the sky and illuminating the entire valley. Soon after, a loud sonic boom echoed throughout. One of the most bizarre experiences I’ve ever had since my very first total solar eclipse. Not a bad way to cap off my first trip to New Zealand and feel very grateful to have been apart of this moment and capture a part of it to share with others.
