Perfect for Portland's reuse/recycle ethos, the Arboretum House sees an unremarkable hillside house transformed into a modern, angular home. While the original roofline was held over from the former layout, new vertical slot windows provide far more light to reach the interior. An open-plan joins the living, dining, and kitchen together, while views from inside provide a forest feel. Rough sawn cedar walls provide a feeling of warmth while connecting with the original oak parquet floors that were given a white transparent finish for a more contemporary look. The home is finished with a deck that integrates one of the site's many trees directly into the design.
